Calvi - Plage de la Pinède is the long sandy bay beach east of Calvi town, pine wood and the Balagne railway behind it, and it is the obvious north-Corsica kite venue because you can drive to it and rig on wide sand.
The working wind is west-sector; NE also works and is the wave direction, with 1.5-2 m faces possible in front of the Foreign Legion barracks. NW Mistral is the catch.
Along this beach it blows offshore and gusty, often light at the edge and then a sudden band of much stronger wind about 200 m out, so a rider who cannot hold ground upwind may not get back to the launch.
No kite school exists in the Balagne and no rescue boat covers kiters, which makes this an autonomous riders' spot whatever the water looks like from the sand. Best months are November to April; summer wind is variable, and in July and August the beach is a resort frontage full of swimmers and private concessions.
Kiting is tolerated rather than regulated: ride east of the bathing zone and away from the stone breakwaters. No official 2026 kite corridor or municipal kite order was found.

fills in: Thermals reportedly strengthen in the late afternoon, roughly 14:00-18:00; unconfirmed.

Typical strength

10-35 reportedly in gusty bands; no normal range documented

Regular at the beach on a good day, but lulls at the edge and a sudden band of much stronger wind about 200 m out are normal.
Best months run November to April, or November to March by the stricter count. Counted as days reaching force 4, the bay gets roughly 73 a year: December is the strongest month at about 10, and June, July and August sit near three each. So the windy season and the beach season are opposites here.
Corsica is rideable all year for anyone who waits for the right synoptic day.

The quiver, in words

No local size data exists. Indicative for a 75-85 kg rider: 8-9 m on the 18-25 kt west or Mistral days that make the drive worth it, 6-7 m once it pushes past 30 kt, 11-12 m on the rarer 12-15 kt afternoons.Size for the band offshore rather than for the beach - the wind can jump from 10 to 35 kt about 200 m out, so a kite that feels right while you rig can be two steps too big out there.

Direction to shore

Varies by sector: W and NE are usable; NW Mistral is offshore and gusty near shore.

Dominant direction

W; NE also works; NW Mistral is reported as offshore.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

sea

Standing depth

Reportedly standing depth near shore at both high and low tide, but the departure is offshore and gusty in NW, so upwind ability matters more than depth. No bathymetry was found.

Tides

Small Mediterranean tidal effect; Plage des Dunes is reported as not tide-dependent, while both high and low tide are described as navigable.

Temperature

24°C summer · 13°C winter

Wetsuit

Shorts or no wetsuit in peak summer for warm days; shorty or normal wetsuit in spring/autumn and a thicker suit in winter.

Currents

No measured current data. Current reportedly strengthens near the rocky edges; the bigger drift risk is the wind, not the water.

14–27°C water
Sandy bay beach backed by the Pinède and the Balagne railway. Water is flat or choppy in the bay, with wave potential in NE wind and small waves farther out depending on conditions.

Your level

not for beginners hereintermediateadvanced
Autonomous riders only. No kite school exists in the Balagne, and a rider who cannot hold ground upwind in the gusty offshore band may not return to the launch. The broader Calvi beach is sometimes rated beginner; that rating does not survive a NW day.

Rescue

Seasonal bathing surveillance exists on parts of the beach, mainly near the port, but there is no dedicated public kitesurf rescue service.

Launch

Sand launch from the long Plage de la Pinède / Plage de Calvi. Easy access and a broad sandy rigging area, except at the peak of summer; public space increases away from the town/port end.In NW Mistral, launch works along the whole beach; in NE wind the preferred takeoff is in front of the Foreign Legion barracks, where 1.5-2 m waves can form.

Hazards riders report 8

  • crowded beach in peak summer
  • nearby swimmers and beach users
  • Sensitive cohabitation with swimmers and beach users in summer.
  • Lulls near shore followed by much stronger wind offshore.
  • NW Mistral can be offshore and gusty along the beach.
  • Stone breakwaters at Plage des Dunes / Calvi.
  • Rocks and stronger current near rocky edges.
  • Very strong wind over 30 knots can become less predictable.
Rules & access
2026: kiting at Calvi is tolerated rather than regulated. Ride east along the beach, away from the bathers, and keep off the stone breakwaters. The commune publishes no beach or nautical order online, and no municipal kite zone, corridor, hours or seasonal ban was found for 2026.

Rider tips

  • Ask a local which section of the beach works for the day's direction; the bay changes with wind angle and beach section.
  • In NW Mistral, assume it is offshore and gusty at the beach and stronger 200 m out, unless you can see otherwise.
  • In summer rig and ride well east of the bathing crowd, away from the town end.
  • Keep away from the stone breakwaters at Plage des Dunes when launching and landing.
  • For NE wave days, launch in front of the Foreign Legion barracks.
  • Base yourself in Calvi and keep the car: Algajola and Lozari are the fallbacks when the wind or the crowd is wrong here.
