Calvi - Plage de la Pinède & Algajola - Aregno

2 spots · 1 school

External renown — how known this place is in the kite world. Not a quality rating.

Two connected Balagne spots on Corsica's northwest coast — an easy town beach right by Calvi and a wilder, unpatrolled wave beach at Algajola between Calvi and Ile-Rousse. It suits independent, already-competent riders who want Corsica's citadel-and-hill-village scenery around their sessions; Algajola specifically has no local kite school, so it does not suit anyone wanting lessons or backup on-site.

The spot cards

Good to know before you go3

  • Algajola-Aregno has no local kite school and a serious shorebreak with rocks — go only if you are already confident and self-sufficient, and bring your own repair/backup gear.
  • Calvi's airport is genuinely small; flight schedules are seasonal and route-dependent, so check current-year connections before booking rather than assuming year-round service.
  • Corsica overall runs pricier than mainland France, especially in July-August — factor that into accommodation and car-rental budgeting.

The spots

  1. Calvi - Plage de la Pinède

    sea

Calvi - Plage de la Pinède is the long sandy bay beach east of Calvi town, pine wood and the Balagne railway behind it, and it is the obvious north-Corsica kite venue because you can drive to it and rig on wide sand.

The model here carries the month's average wind rather than a count of windy days: it reaches 12.8 kt in November, the strongest month it models for this spot.

Calvi - Plage de la Pinède: the long version, the launch and the rules

More on Calvi - Plage de la Pinède

The working wind is west-sector; NE also works and is the wave direction, with 1.5-2 m faces possible in front of the Foreign Legion barracks. NW Mistral is the catch. Along this beach it blows offshore and gusty, often light at the edge and then a sudden band of much stronger wind about 200 m out, so a rider who cannot hold ground upwind may not get back to the launch. No kite school exists in the Balagne and no rescue boat covers kiters, which makes this an autonomous riders' spot whatever the water looks like from the sand. Best months are November to April; summer wind is variable, and in July and August the beach is a resort frontage full of swimmers and private concessions. Kiting is tolerated rather than regulated: ride east of the bathing zone and away from the stone breakwaters. No official 2026 kite corridor or municipal kite order was found.

    Getting on the water

Sand launch from the long Plage de la Pinède / Plage de Calvi. Easy access and a broad sandy rigging area, except at the peak of summer; public space increases away from the town/port end. In NW Mistral, launch works along the whole beach; in NE wind the preferred takeoff is in front of the Foreign Legion barracks, where 1.5-2 m waves can form.

    If it goes wrong

Seasonal bathing surveillance exists on parts of the beach, mainly near the port, but there is no dedicated public kitesurf rescue service.

    Room to rig

wide outside peak summer; medium where beach users, private beaches or breakwaters compress usable space

    Rules and access

2026: kiting at Calvi is tolerated rather than regulated. Ride east along the beach, away from the bathers, and keep off the stone breakwaters. The commune publishes no beach or nautical order online, and no municipal kite zone, corridor, hours or seasonal ban was found for 2026.

  2. Algajola - Aregno

    sea

Algajola - Aregno is the long sandy Plage d'Aregno between Calvi and L'Île-Rousse, and in the Balagne it is the wave beach, not the learning one.

Algajola - Aregno: the long version, the launch and the rules

    More on Algajola - Aregno

W/SW and NE are the wave directions; the Libecciu from the west is the main setup, side-on to side-shore on this west-facing beach, and a strong NW Mistral goes onshore and messy, at which point Calvi is the better bet. The shorebreak is big. There are rocks toward the north end and around the launches, no kite school anywhere in the Balagne, and one report of current pulling offshore in big weather. The listed window is November-April, though the spot is open all year; in July-August the sand belongs to bathers, restaurants and private beaches, with lifeguards on duty and little room to launch. Swell takes a few days of strong wind to fill in, so check the wind history, not just tomorrow's forecast. No official 2026 municipal kite ban or corridor has turned up.

    Getting on the water

Launch off the sand of Plage d'Aregno, best from the centre of the beach facing the channel or from the quieter north end, and always downwind of the rocks that outcrop toward Aregno. The beach runs about 1.4 km of fine sand and at least 80 m wide, chapel on one side, mountains behind. Parking is strung along the beach road that leaves the N2197 at the edge of Algajola and follows the sand and the railway. The citadel end is the busy one; the north end is quieter, with small dunes.

    If it goes wrong

Lifeguarded as a bathing beach in summer only. No kite-specific rescue, no club boat, and nothing at all out of season, which is when the wave days come. Bathing has been closed here before in dangerous swell and wind, most recently in August 2023.

    Room to rig

Wide off season. In summer the citadel end fills with private beaches, restaurants and bathers, the beach is lifeguarded, and the usable room shrinks toward the quieter north end.

    Rules and access

2026: open all year; no municipal kite ban, corridor, permit or seasonal restriction for Algajola or Aregno has been found. The beach is supervised as a bathing beach in summer and carries private beach concessions, restaurants and a nautical centre, so July-August the sand is effectively spoken for. Closures do happen on this coast: in August 2023 bathing was banned at the Aregno and Algajola beaches because of dangerous swell, current and violent wind.

Car neededyes
TransfersCar rental desks (Hertz, Europcar, Avis, Citer) and airport shuttles (Les Beaux Voyages, Autocars Mariani) operate from the terminal; taxis are also available. Locally, the coastal T30 road links Calvi, Algajola and Ile-Rousse, and the small seasonal coastal train (the Trinichellu, or 'train des plages') runs the same route with a stop at Algajola, reaching beaches without a car.

What riders say

8 recurring claims

  1. Summer is the weak season for wind here — July and August run on an afternoon thermal that shows up maybe one day in two or three, while the real wind is autumn-to-spring Mistral

    consensus×4 riders

  2. Algajola is the wave spot of the pair — a kilometre of west-facing beach that takes real swell after several days of strong wind, and is rated for advanced riders

    consensus×4 riders

  3. Nobody teaches kite in the Balagne, so you arrive able to self-rescue and self-launch or you do not ride

    consensus×3 riders

  4. Calvi bay fans the wind out and kills it near the sand — riders describe a dead zone at the beach and then a sudden jump a couple of hundred metres out, so getting back upwind is the real skill test

    majority×3 riders

  5. Launch space is generous on both beaches except at the peak of summer, when the sand is taken and the swimmer zones eat the usable width

    majority×3 riders

  6. Kiting in Calvi bay is tolerated rather than authorised, and riders keep themselves east of the swimmers because one bad incident is expected to end it

    majority×2 riders

  7. Rocks break the surface at the north end of Algajola towards Aregno and at both ends of Calvi bay, and the current picks up around them

    majority×2 riders

  8. Which of the two works in a hard north-west Mistral is genuinely argued over: some send you from Algajola into Calvi bay because Algajola turns onshore and messy, others call Algajola the best wave spot in Corsica precisely when the Mistral is strongest

    contested×2 riders

Scene & life

VibeCalvi's marina area is described as pleasant, with restaurants, bars and terraces around the port; Algajola and the wider Balagne beach spots are quieter and there is no local kite school there, so the scene around the spot itself is thin rather than social.
Rider hangoutsA Casarella in Pigna — Corsican tapas on a terrace overlooking the sea and mountains, a short drive inland from the coast
Activities
  • Calvi Citadel, a 15th-century Genoese fortress with ramparts overlooking the bay and mountains
  • the coastal Trinichellu train between Calvi and Ile-Rousse
  • Ile-Rousse's port, Place Paoli and town centre
Day trips
  • the Balagne hill villages — Pigna, Sant'Antonino, Lumio, Aregno, Belgodere — reachable in a short drive inland
  • Calvi is the trailhead for the GR20, Corsica's long-distance mountain hiking route, for those extending the trip into hiking
Pairs withThe GR20 trailhead starting in Calvi makes this a natural pairing for a kite-plus-hiking trip, and the Balagne hill villages work as half-day loops between sessions.

Itinerary idea

Base in Calvi for the airport and the town beach, use the coastal train or a short drive to reach Algajola for the wave spot, and add a Balagne hill-village day and/or a GR20 taster hike.

  • Where should you stay in Calvi or Algajola, and what does it cost?
  • Which summer festivals fall in Calvi, and when?
  • General cost level 'high' is an inference from Corsica's known tourist-pricing pattern, not a directly sourced Balagne-specific figure.
