Shamal

09:00 · 14:00 · 17:00 · 18:00

Light days build on the afternoon thermal; an indicative hourly profile for the cool season has the lift starting about 09:00, the best hours between 14:00 and 17:00, and a fade after 18:00. Shamal timing is synoptic, so on a frontal day read the forecast rather than the clock.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Yas Island is a real kite beach on the Abu Dhabi side, shallow and flat with chop, and it is rideable at any level when the tide plays along.
At high tide there is about 150 m of shallow water in front of the beach; on the ebb it dries out and the shells that come up will cut a kite. Wind follows the Shamal pattern: N, NW and NNW are the directions that work, mostly light thermal up to about 20 kt with harder frontal days.
There are high-voltage power lines east of the beach by the bridge, so walk several hundred metres along the sand before you rig. Boat traffic out of Yas Marina and the navigation channels are the other thing to keep in your head.
Access is the easy part, 10 km from Abu Dhabi International, hotels behind the beach and schools working the water. Come January to April or September to December. Skip the summer, when the air and the water are both too hot to enjoy.

Typical strength

Mostly light UAE thermal, usually up to about 20 kt, with stronger Shamal and frontal days. Abu Dhabi tends to run 1-3 kt more than Dubai in NW wind.

Usable and forecast-dependent light-wind Gulf riding. January to April and September to December are the months that come up most often.
The season runs January to April and September to December. The wider UAE cooler-season window gets given as November to April, or November to March, with summer usually too hot to bother.

The quiver, in words

Big kites and foil gear are the usual UAE answer; the Yas quiver is unconfirmed.

N, NW and NNW are the working directions here; the exact shore angle is unconfirmed.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

flat to chop; shallow tidal Gulf beach

Standing depth

about 150 m of shallow water in front of the beach at high tide; the area dries at ebb tide and becomes deep farther out

Tides

High tide is recommended; ebb tide exposes shell areas and reduces usable shallow water.

Temperature

34°C summer · 21°C winter

Wetsuit

shorts/boardshorts reported for all seasons; optional thin top in winter for personal comfort

Currents

The mangrove channels behind and beside the beach move a lot of water, and the local advice is to read the tide coefficient before riding rather than assume the flat water is still. Nothing has been measured at the beach itself.

22–35°C water
Clean shallow water, flat with chop, over stones and shells. Mangroves sit behind the beach, and how much usable water you get swings hard with the tide.

Your level

beginnerintermediateadvanced
Beginner, intermediate and expert riders all use it, and there is a school, repair, rental and parking. Beginners still have to read the tide and keep away from the power lines, the shells, the boats and the channels.

Rescue

Nothing published for the open kite stretch: no lifeguard service, no kite rescue boat. The schools working the beach supervise their own lessons and rentals, and that is the cover a visiting rider can plan on. UAE emergency numbers are 999 for police, 998 for an ambulance and 996 for the coastguard.
Yas Beach, the fenced paid beach behind the sand, is a separate operation running 10:00-19:00 and is not the launch.

Launch

A long sand-and-pebble beach with car access. Walk several hundred metres east along the sand to get clear of the power lines by the bridge. Yas Beach itself is a private paid beach, mangroves behind it, watersport facilities on it.

Space

Big beach. Usable rigging and riding room comes down to the tide and to staying clear of the power lines and other beach users.

Hazards riders report 9

  • Mangrove flats and channels
  • Boat traffic near Yas Marina
  • Proximity to marina/charter boat operations
  • Shells can rip kites, especially where the beach dries at ebb tide
  • Stones and pebbles
  • High-voltage power lines east of the beach: stay well away
  • Boat traffic and navigational channels around Abu Dhabi waters
  • Very hot summer air and water temperatures
  • Beach users during the main riding months
Rules & access
2026: kitesurfers are asked to keep at least 30 m from other people where boats or swimmers are around, and to watch boat traffic and navigational channels; the emirate names Yas Island as one of the spots where licensed operators run lessons and rentals. No kite zone, permit or launch boundary is published for the beach. Yas Beach, the fenced beach behind the sand, is a separate paid operation: open 10:00-19:00 in 2026, free for guests of some Yas Plaza hotels, day passes quoted between AED 80 on weekdays and AED 200 at weekends depending on the listing, children under 12 free, and it holds Blue Flag status.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Ride the high tide; the ebb takes the shallow water away and puts shells under your board.
  • Walk several hundred metres east, away from the bridge and the power lines, before you pump.
  • Bring the big kite unless a Shamal is on the chart.
  • Check Yas Beach access before you drive over: guests at some Yas Island hotels get in free, everyone else buys a day pass.
  • Keep at least 30 m off swimmers and boats, which is the separation the emirate asks for.
  • Check Yas Beach access and price before you drive over: guests at some Yas Island hotels get in free, and the 2026 day pass is quoted anywhere from AED 80 on a weekday to AED 200 at the weekend.
  • Assume nobody is coming to get you: have a self-rescue plan, and note 999, 998 and 996 for police, ambulance and coastguard.
