Lake Garda before you go: no free launch

Garda's shore launches are club-run. What the membership, licence and Italian medical certificate cost in 2026, and when Peler and Ora actually blow.

You cannot rig on a Garda beach and go. Sort that before you book, because on Lake Garda the shore is club ground, the launch is a marked corridor, and the person on duty decides when your kite goes up.

Campione del Garda runs its kite area under a lakeshore concession, so you join or you do not ride. Navene, the only beach departure area in the municipality of Malcesine, is the same arrangement under a different club. Torbole has no shore launch at all. Every session starts on a boat.

What you need in the bag before you rig

2026 at Campione: a valid FIV, IKO or VDWS kitesurfing licence, third-party kiteboarding liability insurance with at least EUR 500,000 (2026) of cover, and a medical certificate of fitness for non-competitive sport including an ECG. That certificate has to be issued by an Italian doctor in Italy, which is the requirement most visitors trip over at the desk.

Minimum age 12. Membership prices were published for the 2025 season and were still up in 2026: EUR 170 (2025) for the year, EUR 80 (2025) for a week, EUR 15 (2025) for under-18s. There is no day ticket and no monthly one.

Kite Club Malcesine at Navene sells access by the day instead: EUR 25 (2026) for a day pass, EUR 100 (2026) for five days, EUR 200 (2026) for the season from 16/04/2026, or EUR 180 (2026) in presale until 15/04/2026, with an under-22 season at EUR 170 (2026). The CSEN card that carries the third-party insurance is EUR 5 (2026).

Emergency recovery of a member costs EUR 15 (2026), and the same again to get your gear back. Minimum age is 14, and anyone aged 16 or younger has to be accompanied by a fully qualified instructor at all times. Both clubs want a level-3 kiteboarding certificate, a safety vest worn the whole session and a line knife on you.

The two winds and the clock they run on

Peler from the north in the morning, Ora from the south in the afternoon, and the flat gap in the middle of the day is real.

At Campione the Peler reaches the beach around 07:00 and strengthens after sunrise, commonly 15-22 knots and up to about 30 on a stronger normal day; the Ora there is the softer wind at 10-18 knots with a peak around 14:00-15:00. Off Malcesine the Peler holds through sunrise and normally fades between 10:30 and 11:00. The Ora fills from the south between 11:00 and 13:00 and runs to sunset.

The lift boats say the same thing without a forecast: out at about 07:30 for the Peler, about 13:30 for the Ora. Pack both ends of the quiver, a 6-7 m for the morning and a 12-15 m for the afternoon.

It is one day and two different winds. Thermal wind here is regular by lake standards and generic forecast apps still under-read it, which is why the webcams and the anemometer do the real work.

Torbole runs on hours and zones

2026 in Garda Trentino: stay at least 200 m off the coast, keep 200 m from public transport boats, use only official lift providers, and do not kite during a regatta. The wind ceiling is 16 m/s, raised from 12 when the rules were last revised.

From 01/03 to 09/10 some kite areas are open only sunrise to 10:30 and 16:30 to sunset, some only after 18:00, and some are closed outright; from 10/10 to 28/02 the whole Garda Trentino kite area is open sunrise to sunset.

Surf Segnana runs 9 May to 1 November 2026, 08:30-18:30, with lessons at 07:00 for advanced riders and at 13:30 for everyone else, and the lift costs from EUR 45 (2026) without gear to EUR 99 (2026) with it. VDWS Level 5 or IKO Level 3 gets you on the boat; turn up without a card and you watch.

At the Duotone Pro Center kiting in front of the centre is not possible in 2026 and rental is sold only bundled with the shuttle. Right of way in the Navene corridor is blunter: one kite at a time, priority to riders coming in, and no jumps near the shore.

Who should not book this

Beginners who want to ride independently, and anyone reading "lake" as "easy". The water is deep from the pebbles out, there is no standing area worth counting on, and every independent session assumes you can body-drag upwind, relaunch in deep water and pack down offshore.

The launch beaches are small enough that a mistake is expensive. Campione is "one of the smallest launch areas I've seen", the Malcesine-side beach is tight enough that a botched launch can put a kite on the lakeside highway rather than in the water, and "there have been accidents destroying much more than just a kite".

That club has come close to losing its permission over incidents involving inexperienced visitors, so the strictness is not paperwork for its own sake. Water shoes are not optional either: pebble beach, boulder lake bed.

Two claims that do not agree

The Ora switch is given as about 11:00 and also as 12:00 to 13:00, so the honest window is 11:00 to 13:00 and you rig when you see it fill. Ora strength comes out as 12-17 knots, as 14-18 knots for the Navene stretch, and as about 15 knots off Malcesine.

The Peler is either usually around 20 knots and often up to 30, or 16-25 knots on a normal morning rising to 25-35 on a strong summer forecast. The reliability itself is contested.

The thermal pattern is famous and riders still get skunked: "usually too low for my taste" on one trip, "complicated to kite (and expensive)" as the verdict on another. Club fees get the same treatment, with a much older and much lower joining figure still circulating against the club's own 2026 fee sheet.

Getting there, and the road that eats the day

Verona Villafranca is roughly 40 minutes by taxi or 1.5 to 2 hours by bus and train; Bergamo Orio al Serio is a 1.5 to 2 hour drive. There is no train station on the lake itself, so the nearest rail is Rovereto, about 20 minutes from Torbole.

Verona airport to Malcesine is 59 km and about 1 h 05 min on clear roads, and to Campione 106 km and roughly 1 h 40 min, which becomes closer to two hours on a summer weekend.

The SS249 Gardesana is the only link between the towns, it hugs cliffs through tunnels on the east shore, and a 20 km hop in August can take an hour. Beer on the lakefront is about EUR 5-6 (2025-26).

Learn the emergency landing drill before you need it, because at Navene it is written down: kite into the water no closer than 150 m from shore, neutralise it, swim in, deflate at once. And when a red flag goes up outside the club reception, rescue that day is not guaranteed.
