The spot

Torbole is one of the big watersports bases on the northern shore of Lake Garda, and for kiting you should read it as a boat destination rather than a beach. Nobody launches off the town front: the schools and the lift boats rig ashore, run you out past the kite barrier, and you pump and launch on the water.

The wind is the reason to come. Northerly Peler blows from the small hours to around midday, the southerly Ora takes over near noon and holds to sunset, and April to October is the stretch worth booking. The water is deep the moment you leave the shore, so be a confident swimmer before you get on the boat.

Rules and requirements

Garda Trentino rules allow only official lift providers, keep you 200 m off the coast, ban kiting during regattas and cap the wind at 16 m/s, and independent riders need a recognised deep-water level such as IKO Level 3. Beginners can learn here through the schools, but budget shuttle tickets on top of everything else and expect company on the water in summer.

The centres run March-November, and April-October is the stretch with pleasant temperatures and the most consistent wind.

Rescue

Pick-up is part of the product rather than a separate service.

Lift boats take riders out past the kite barrier and bring them back to the beach, lessons run with a support powerboat, shuttles keep radio or telephone contact with shore, and a standard lift ticket includes up to two upwind recoveries.

No independent, non-commercial rescue exists on this stretch: off a provider's boat, nobody is watching for you.

Launch

No normal shore launch at the Torbole centres. Schools and lift providers rig ashore, take riders out by motorboat past the kite barrier, inflate and launch on the water, supervise, then bring riders back to land.Surf Segnana / KiteSegnana operates from the Foci del Sarca, Circolo Surf Torbole from Via della Lova, and Duotone Pro Center from Conca d'Oro, whose kite area is further south towards Malcesine and Limone by boat shuttle.Lift boats carry up to 12 riders and have a compressor on board.

Seasonal zoning and boundaries

2026 seasonal zoning: from 01/03 to 09/10 some kite areas are limited to sunrise-10:30 and 16:30-sunset, some after 18:00, and some areas are forbidden; from 10/10 to 28/02 kitesurf areas are sunrise-sunset on the whole Garda Trentino lake area.

The kite area is bounded to the south by the regional boundary with Veneto and Lombardia and to the north by the imaginary line between Corno di Bo (Nago-Torbole) and the former Porto Ponale (Ledro); from 01/03 to 09/10, after 18:00 until sunset that northern limit moves about a kilometre further north, to the line between Foce Ponale and the southern portal of the Salto della Capra tunnel.

The wind ceiling was raised from 12 to 16 m/s and the winter regime moved to 10 October when these rules were last revised, after a request from the local kite association and objections from the sailing clubs.

Official lift providers

Two official lift providers are recognised for the Garda Trentino kite area: Sailing Du Lac at Riva del Garda and Surf Segnana at Torbole.

Surf Segnana

2026 Surf Segnana: open 9 May to 1 November, 08:30-18:30, lessons at 07:00 for advanced levels and 13:30 for all levels, lift from EUR 45 without gear to EUR 99 with, VDWS Level 5 or IKO Level 3 required for lift and rental, life jacket and helmet provided.

Duotone Pro Center

2026 at Duotone Pro Center: kitesurfing in front of the centre is not possible and rental is sold only combined with the kite shuttle; shuttle and rental require IKO Level 3.

KiteSegnana

2026 at KiteSegnana: the lift service requires a life jacket, a helmet, a phone in a waterproof pouch, a copy of an ID document and an IKO/FISN/VDWS level-recognition card.

Rider tips

Be on the beach for the 07:00-07:30 boat if you want the Peler, or around 13:00-13:30 for the Ora.
Book the lift or the lesson before you travel in July and August; the useful windows are built around those two sessions.
Do not turn up expecting to self-launch off the Torbole beach; confirm the day's kite area and shuttle plan with a provider first.
Bring proof of level, IKO, VDWS or FISN, or you will not get on the lift or rent gear.
Pack what the lift service asks you to carry: life jacket, helmet, phone in a waterproof pouch, a copy of an ID document.
Check the regatta calendar before you plan a kite day, because kiting during a regatta is banned.
Take a supervised shuttle on your first Garda day even if you ride alone everywhere else; deep water, boat traffic and downwind drift are nothing like a shallow coastal spot.

Airport

Verona Valerio Catullo (VRN) is the nearest, about 80 km from Torbole; Milan-Bergamo Orio al Serio (BGY) is the other one people use.

Route

By car, the A22 to the Rovereto Sud-Lago di Garda Nord exit, then signs to Torbole. By public transport, the Aerobus from Verona Airport to Verona Porta Nuova, train to Rovereto, then a Trentino Trasporti bus to Riva del Garda, Torbole or Arco; in summer some services run straight from Verona airport on the Garda routes.
