Kalpitiya does almost all the work in Sri Lanka: a fishing-village peninsula strung with kite camps around a shallow teaching lagoon, working the south-west monsoon from May through October and peaking in July-August.

The lagoon handles beginners and freestyle, boat trips reach flatter sandbank spots like Vella Island and Ippantivu, and Donkey Point adds small waves for those who want them.

Mannar and Adam's Bridge, further north near the old civil-war frontline, are a remote extension for sandbank flat water without camp infrastructure.

It suits dedicated kite-trip travelers over beach-holiday tourists - there is almost nothing at Kalpitiya beyond the camps.
