Kalpitiya
Kalpitiya is a dedicated, remote kite pilgrimage, not a beach-holiday base with a kite spot bolted on: a strip of fishing-village coast where a dozen mostly-European-run kite camps sit strung along the lagoon and there is almost nothing to eat, drink or do beyond them. It works brilliantly if kitesurfing is the actual point of your trip - flat lagoon, reliable wind, EU-quality instruction, a tight communal-dinner-table social scene. It is the wrong call if you want restaurant variety, nightlife, or a walkable town, and it does not slot neatly into a wider Sri Lanka itinerary - most people bolt a dedicated 5-7 day block onto the start or end of a trip rather than passing through.

Editor's brief
Three facts orient everything here. One: the wind has two personalities - mid-May to mid-October is 18-25 kt cross-shore southwest gusting 30 and blowing all day; mid-December to mid-March is 15-25 kt and afternoon-only, with calm mornings the camps fill with dolphin boats. Two: the spots close on a rota. Kappalady and Vella Island are summer-only, Navy Point is winter-only, and the 1 km x 2 km Big Lagoon is the only thing that runs year-round. Three: almost nobody sleeps on the water they ride - the camps sit on the ocean side at Kandakuliya and shuttle you to the lagoon twice a day, ten minutes each way, and a February 2026 rider thread says it plainly: most Kalpitiya resorts are not close to the launch. The logistics truth is duller and better than the guides say. Colombo airport to the camps is 133 km by road, 2 h 40 free-flow, 3-3.5 h real - not the 165 km in circulation. Kitesurfing Lanka charges EUR 85 each way; an independent taxi is cheaper and worse at finding sand tracks. The nearest hospital is not 40 km away in Puttalam - Base Hospital (B) Kalpitiya is in town, 7 km and twelve minutes from the Kandakuliya camps. Town also holds four bank branches within 600 m, including Bank of Ceylon on Main Street, so cash exists; it just isn't walkable from bed. Puttalam is a full hour each way, not the 30-45 minutes everyone repeats. Power is no longer the 2022 story: CEB stopped scheduled load-shedding in February 2023 and there were no cuts scheduled as of March 2026. Bases, honestly. Kitesurfing Lanka at Kandakuliya is the anchor and the only operator publishing everything - EUR 40 glamping to EUR 145 luxury bungalow per person full board, private lessons EUR 65/hr, gear EUR 75/day on Duotone SLS, generator backup, free guarded storage, and boats to every outer spot. The Rascals at Anawasal is the AC-and-pool alternative at EUR 130-160 per double all-in, and doubles as the peninsula's only real social venue via pizza night and Wednesday aperitivo. Ruuk Village is ten solar cabanas with no AC and no fast wifi by design - a choice, not an omission. Bar Reef Resort should be struck from the list until someone answers a phone; its domain is parked for sale. What nobody tells you: the boat trips need a minimum of four riders, so a quiet week can quietly cancel the reason you came. Rental gear is gated at IKO Level 3, which strands confident self-taught riders without a card. Kappalady has no rescue-boat cover. Vella is offshore wind and advanced-only. Riders complain about lagoon water quality, and the shell-strewn bottom cuts feet and punctures bladders - reef shoes are equipment, not a nicety. Drones need CAASL registration at LKR 4,800 a day and possibly a navy officer standing next to you. The decisions: pick your season for the spot menu, not the crowd - winter buys you calm dolphin mornings and Navy Point but only half a kiting day; summer buys all-day wind, Vella, Kappalady and gusts that will make you wish you'd rigged smaller. Pick your camp for the shuttle timetable and the backup power, not the photographs. And decide before you book whether you want AC and a pool or solar and a hammock, because on this peninsula that is a genuine fork and the price is nearly the same.
What nobody tells you first
- ATMs are scarce on the peninsula - carry enough cash from Puttalam or Colombo
- Summer (May-September) wind is strong but very gusty as it arrives over land; Kappalady Lagoon is the local fallback for smoother wind if the main lagoon's gusts wear you out
- Kappalady's wind direction turns unreliable in winter and some resorts there close seasonally - check before booking that zone off-peak
- Spiky seashells litter the sandy lagoon bottom - reef shoes are worth packing, not just a nice-to-have
- Independent dining is genuinely limited - most camps push full-board packages because there is close to nowhere else nearby to eat, not just as an upsell
- Peak season (June-August, December-January) books out 3-6 months ahead at the established camps
- A single day is not enough to learn anything beyond kite control on land - budget a minimum of 3-5 days for a real course
