Kalpitiya Lagoon
Kalpitiya is widely regarded as the best kitesurfing location in Sri Lanka, drawing Kiteboard Tour Asia competitions and a cluster of dedicated kite schools along its lagoon. The peninsula sits between the Indian Ocean and Puttalam Lagoon, giving direct access to both the lagoon's butter-flat water for learning and freestyle, and ocean swell/waves beyond the outer sandbank for progression into wave riding. It anchors two separate kite seasons each year — a strong southwest-monsoon summer season and a lighter northeast-monsoon winter season — making it one of the few destinations in the region with two distinct annual wind windows.

Same Puttalam mainland model, ~24km away -- the furthest of the three Kalpitiya spots from this proxy station. known_best_months for this spot also lists Dec-Feb (NE monsoon) as good; the data here shows only modest Dec-Jan speeds (10.7-11.1kt, N/NE) at Puttalam, weaker than the May-Sep SW-monsoon peak, which may reflect genuine seasonal contrast or may understate the NE-monsoon lagoon-channeling effect specific to Kalpitiya that this mainland station can't see.
