Arenales del Sol & Playa de San Juan

choppybeginner-friendlygear rentalmid-range

2 spots · 1 school

Two very different beaches under one Alicante-area trip: Playa de San Juan is a fully urbanized, tram-connected extension of Alicante city, while Arenales del Sol is a quieter second-home beach town near the airport that empties out for most of the year.
It suits riders splitting time between city convenience and a calmer strip, but Playa de San Juan itself gets too crowded for kiting in peak summer.

  • Summer tourist crowding at Playa de San Juan is flagged as a reason kitesurfing there is not recommended in high season — plan sessions for shoulder season or off-peak hours.

Arenales del Sol: the long version, the launch and the rules

    More on Arenales del Sol

Elche town hall enabled a kitesurf area here in 2021, with room for classes and a summer school, and Parres Water Sports teaches on this beach, registered with FESurf as Club Deportivo Parres. The winds to watch are E Llevant and SW Garbí, and the working season across Alicante runs April to September. The launch is the easy part: big beach, no tide to plan around. This is a second-home resort, so from June the sand in front of the settlement belongs to bathers and the usable kite area shrinks even though nothing is signposted. Nobody has published monthly wind figures for Arenales itself, so the season above is regional guidance and the forecast on the morning still decides. Come in April, May or late September if you want the wind without the parasols.

    Getting on the water

A long, wide sand beach running past the dunes and the Arenales del Sol settlement. Space is not the constraint here. Bathers are.

    If it goes wrong

Municipal lifeguards cover the beach seasonally: Easter week 11:00-17:00, June and September 10:00-19:00, July-August 10:00-20:00, and 1-12 October 11:00-17:00. That is general beach rescue, nothing kite-specific. The bathing area is buoy-marked from 1 June to 15 October. Lessons through Parres run with trained instructors, helmets, lifejackets, a first-aid kit, civil-liability and accident insurance. Emergency number is 112.

    Rules and access

2021: Elche town hall enabled a place for kitesurfing at Playa Arenales del Sol, classes and a summer school included. 2026: the bathing area is buoy-marked from 1 June to 15 October, and no kite-specific rule, zone map or hours have been published by the town hall or the tourism office for Arenales del Sol.

  2. Playa de San Juan

    chop · beginner ok · cross-on

Playa de San Juan is 6.2km of built-up sand on Alicante's northeastern edge, 2.9km of it inside the city limits, backed by a promenade that stays busy all year.

The model here carries the month's average wind rather than a count of windy days: it reaches 14.8 kt in March, the strongest month it models for this spot.

Playa de San Juan: the long version, the launch and the rules

More on Playa de San Juan

The wind that works is Levante and Gregal, synoptic easterlies and northeasterlies off the Mediterranean that leave the sea choppy with small waves rather than flat; Xaloc and Garbi also come up as workable, at 15-20 knots. There is an unresolved legal question here. The 2021 provincial list of authorised kitesurf zones in Alicante province covers Denia (Les Deveses), Elche (Arenales del Sol) and Guardamar del Segura (Els Tossals), and San Juan is not on it, while kiting outside an authorised zone in the province can carry a 1500 EUR fine under the 2018 PATIVEL coastal plan. Nothing published after 2021 clears that up. Summer is simpler: June through August the sand is packed and kiting here is discouraged, on crowds rather than any confirmed ban. April to September is the stated season, which is exactly when the beach is worst, so the honest window sits at the edges of it. No kite school works this stretch by name.

    Getting on the water

About 6.2km of sand along the Alicante-El Campello coastline, 2.9km of it within Alicante itself, and roughly 85-90m deep from the promenade to the water. The paved promenade runs the length of it. Reachable on foot, by car, tram or bus from central Alicante.

    If it goes wrong

Lifeguard cover runs in the high season only and there is nothing on the beach outside it. Dates, hours and post positions are not published, and no kite-specific rescue or recovery service exists here. The general emergency number is 112.

    Rules and access

The 2021 provincial tourism list of beaches with an authorised kitesurf zone in Alicante province covers Denia (Les Deveses), Elche (Arenales del Sol) and Guardamar del Segura (Els Tossals). Playa de San Juan is not on it, and kitesurfing outside authorised locations elsewhere in the province can carry a 1500 EUR sanction under the 2018 PATIVEL coastal plan. San Juan kiting is separately called not recommended in summer because of tourist crowding, with no specific hour restriction confirmed. Nothing found updates this picture past 2021.

What riders say

4 recurring claims

  1. Summer is the awkward part: the same beaches that look huge on a map fill with tourists, so riding windows and launch choices narrow.

    consensus×4 riders

  2. Arenales is the more believable kite beach of the pair: shallow edge, long sand, parking and fewer city-beach complications outside summer.

    majority×3 riders

  3. Playa de San Juan is the comfort base, not the cleanest kite call; people praise the tram, restaurants and long sand more than the riding itself.

    majority×3 riders

  4. School feedback around Arenales/Santa Pola is mixed rather than deep: some praise fair prices and friendly staff, while the visible review count for kite-specific experiences is small.
