On the clock

10:00 · 11:00 · 15:00 · 15:30 · 17:00 · 19:00 · 21:00

A sea-breeze beach. Dawn is close to calm, the wind starts lifting around 10:00, is usable from late morning, and the steadiest hours run 15:00 to 17:00 before it fades between 19:00 and 21:00. Lessons on this beach are scheduled from 11:00 with a 15:30 latest start, which brackets the same window. Hourly records from the airport station 5 km inland, 2010-2026; the cycle runs a little stronger on the sand.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Arenales del Sol is the Elche end of the Alicante coast: a long sandy beach, shallow at the edge, tide-independent, with chop and small waves instead of swell.
Elche town hall enabled a kitesurf area here in 2021, with room for classes and a summer school, and Parres Water Sports teaches on this beach, registered with FESurf as Club Deportivo Parres. The winds to watch are E Llevant and SW Garbí, and the working season across Alicante runs April to September.
The launch is the easy part: big beach, no tide to plan around. This is a second-home resort, so from June the sand in front of the settlement belongs to bathers and the usable kite area shrinks even though nothing is signposted.
Nobody has published monthly wind figures for Arenales itself, so the season above is regional guidance and the forecast on the morning still decides. Come in April, May or late September if you want the wind without the parasols.

Typical strength

12-18 knots on a rideable afternoon, with the strongest one day in ten near 20. The regional Levante and Garbi guidance of 15-20 knots sits inside that. Figures come from the airport station 5 km inland, so they are indicative for the beach rather than measured on it.

The April-September Alicante season runs on constant thermal wind. Reliability at Arenales itself has never been quantified.
The Alicante kitesurf season usually runs from early April to late September, and rideable wind is possible in any month. Arenales del Sol is open all year. April is the strongest of the season months at the inland airport station, with 12 knots or more in about 16 percent of hours, dropping to roughly 9 percent from June to September.
Winter shows more strong hours than summer, but those are mostly W and WNW off the land, which do not work on this beach.

The quiver, in words

For a 75-85 kg rider the working range is 9-12 m twin-tip. 12 m for the ordinary 12-15 knot afternoon, 10 m once the sea breeze settles at 15-18, 9 m on the days that touch 20. Below 12 knots it is foil territory, and that is most mornings.Indicative, derived from the wind range rather than from what riders here actually use.

Direction to shore

The beach is a straight 3 km line running NNW-SSE, facing almost due east, around 084 degrees. Levante from the E arrives straight onshore. NE Gregal comes in side-onshore from the left, SE side-onshore from the right.SW blows off the land here and is offshore, even though it counts as a working direction on the wider Alicante coast. Orientation derived from the mapped coastline, not from a local measurement.

Dominant direction

E and SW listed for Arenales del Sol; broader Alicante guidance emphasizes E/NE Levante/Gregal and SW Garbí/Leveche

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Rescue

Municipal lifeguards cover the beach seasonally: Easter week 11:00-17:00, June and September 10:00-19:00, July-August 10:00-20:00, and 1-12 October 11:00-17:00. That is general beach rescue, nothing kite-specific. The bathing area is buoy-marked from 1 June to 15 October. Lessons through Parres run with trained instructors, helmets, lifejackets, a first-aid kit, civil-liability and accident insurance.
Emergency number is 112.

Launch

A long, wide sand beach running past the dunes and the Arenales del Sol settlement. Space is not the constraint here. Bathers are.

Rules & access
  • 2021: Elche town hall enabled a place for kitesurfing at Playa Arenales del Sol, classes and a summer school included.
  • 2026: the bathing area is buoy-marked from 1 June to 15 October, and no kite-specific rule, zone map or hours have been published by the town hall or the tourism office for Arenales del Sol.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Ask Parres or the Elche town hall where the enabled zone actually runs before you ride independently; no map of it has been published.
  • In June, July and August, walk away from the settlement before you rig and launch clear of the bathers.
  • Pull a forecast for Arenales del Sol itself rather than riding on the Alicante regional pattern.
  • Bring a shorty for spring and autumn; summer water reaches 27 C and a full suit is needed only in winter.
  • Stay in Arenales del Sol or El Altet: the airport is 5 km away, so an early landing and a same-day session works.
  • Do not plan a morning session. The breeze needs until about 11:00 to be worth rigging for and the best two hours are between 15:00 and 17:00.
  • Check the wind is E or NE before you drive out. SW is offshore on this beach whatever the regional guides put in the direction list.
  • From 1 June the bathing area is buoy-marked; stay outside the buoys and launch away from them.
