Cap Skirring

Cap Skirring is Casamance's easy-going, French-flavored beach town - direct flights from Dakar let you skip the long overland route through Gambia, and it suits kiters who want a mellow, resort-ish base with real West African texture rather than a party scene.

Getting there & getting around

airports
  • Cap Skirring Airport (small planes, flights to/from Dakar)
  • Ziguinchor Airport (~70km away, larger regional hub)
transfersFlying direct Dakar-Cap Skirring skips the long overland route; sept-places (shared taxis) and minibuses also run fairly frequently between Cap Skirring and Ziguinchor
car neededNot essential in town, but useful for day trips into the bolongs and villages
road quirksOverland from Dakar means crossing into and back out of The Gambia (a separate country) via the N4 highway through Ziguinchor - factor in two border crossings if not flying direct. An overnight ferry from Dakar to Ziguinchor is another option since the post-Joola-disaster replacement service (the Aline Sitoe Diatta) began in 2007.

Where to stay

better base nearbyZiguinchor is the regional hub (own airport, ferry link to Dakar) if Cap Skirring itself is full or you want a cheaper/less touristy base

Practical

moneyWest African CFA franc (XOF); ATMs limited outside larger towns, break big notes early
languageFrench official; Jola is widely spoken locally alongside Wolof
safetyCasamance had a long separatist conflict (MFDC insurgency from 1990, unstable ceasefires); has been formally at peace with the government since 2004 but armed robberies are still reported in the region - check current advisories before travel
healthYellow fever vaccination and certificate required for entry to Senegal; malaria precautions advised, avoid tap water
visa hintSenegal grants visa-on-arrival to most nationalities (exceptions include Yemen, Hong Kong, Macao, Kosovo)
costs
level: mid-range resort pricing by regional standards, reflecting its French package-tour infrastructure
examples:
seasons beyond windWarm year-round (mean high ~31.5°C); heavy rain July-September, dry season November-April

    Scene & life

vibeLong-standing French package-tourism resort feel rather than an international backpacker or nomad hub
    activities
    • 18-hole golf course
    • Forest trekking and biking
    • Pirogue/kayak trips through the bolongs (mangrove channels)
    • Manatee watching at Pointe Saintes Georges (~CFA 2,000 for foreigners, best December-January at low tide)
    day trips
    • Kafountine - birdwatching and river boat trips near a national park
    • Ziguinchor - regional hub with its own airport and ferry link to Dakar
pairs withA Casamance loop through Ziguinchor and Kafountine; some riders pair it with Saint-Louis or Dakar on a longer Senegal circuit

    Itinerary idea

Fly Dakar-Cap Skirring direct to skip the Gambia border crossings; base here for beach and golf, then add a Ziguinchor or Kafountine day trip for the bolongs and birdlife.
