Nearby Cap Skirring 14 km · straight-line distance

Carabane is a low flat island and village at the mouth of the Casamance River, also written Karabane. Kiting here goes back at least to a photo from 2008, and Cap Skirring operators still run it as one of their river and bolong excursions.
The draw is shelter rather than surf: shallow water, flat to chop, cloudy from the river, and a river section reported very flat for freestyle. The wind numbers are regional rather than local, with dry-season trades and Harmattan roughly January to May and 10-20 or 10-25 kt quoted for a session. This is not a school beach you drive to.
You arrive by pirogue or on an organized trip, low tide drains the flats into mud, and the estuary moves water hard enough to matter, around 50 cm/s on the flood and 90 cm/s on the ebb at Karabane. Warm water, nobody else out, and no rescue if it goes wrong. Come with a boatman who knows the channels.

Typical strength

Regionally 10-20 kt in January-April/May and 10-25 kt February-May around Cap Skirring, with Harmattan gusts possible above 28-30 kt. Carabane-specific wind statistics were not found.

Seasonal rather than guaranteed. The dry-season trades and sea breeze around Cap Skirring are regular enough to plan a trip on, but no Carabane-specific climate average is published in accessible text.
First rides can start in December on 15-20 kt north-east trades and run until July, when the rainy season starts. January-April/May and February-May are both given as the ideal period. The wet season is usually June-October.

Direction to shore

Side-on, cross-shore, pushing south across the Cap Skirring and Casamance spots including Carabane through the January-May north-to-north-east trade season. No offshore direction tied to the riverbank orientation was found, and nothing exists for the exact Carabane launch.

Dominant direction

North to north-east trade winds in the dry season; local sea breeze on the Atlantic coast is also reported around Cap Skirring

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Tides

Semi-diurnal estuary tide. Measurements published in 2025 put the range at Karabane around 0.6 m on neaps and 1.2 m on springs in February 2019. Mudflats dry out at low tide, and keel boats struggle to dock.

Temperature

28°C summer · 22°C winter

Wetsuit

Shorts/rash vest most of the year; no full wetsuit normally needed, but winter water around nearby Cap Skirring can be near 22 C.

Currents

Tidal current runs through the Casamance channels. Measurements published in 2025, taken over a November 2021 tidal cycle, put it at roughly 50 cm/s on the flood and 90 cm/s on the ebb at 4 m depth at Karabane, with a clockwise residual circulation modelled around the island.

25–31°C water
A river-mouth spot: shallow, flat to choppy, cloudy water, and a lot of it. The river itself is reported very flat for freestyle. In a mangrove estuary the channels, the mudflats and the boat logistics matter more than the wave. Standing-depth zones are not documented.

Your level

beginnerintermediateadvanced
Beginner, intermediate and expert ability are all reported for Carabane. The flat shallow water suits a beginner in principle, but a remote island, tidal current, mangrove channels and no documented rescue mean a beginner rides only with organized local support. Some Casamance kite trips are sold to equipped, confirmed riders only.

The scene

What riders come here for

Very quiet and exploratory. Carabane is a small roadless island with modest tourism and no beach crowd. Fishermen, pirogues and village life, not an organized kite beach.

Rescue

No dedicated kite rescue was found. Access is by boat or pirogue, and organized kite excursions from Cap Skirring are reported. Treat self-rescue and boat support as planning items, not extras.

Launch

Sandy medium-size beach with trees as the beach hazard and plenty of room along its length. Otherwise Carabane riding is framed as a river and bolong excursion, reached by boat or organized from Cap Skirring. Launch coordinates and tide windows are not documented.

Hazards riders report 10

  • Extensive tidal mudflats restrict boat access at low tide
  • Remote - no rescue infrastructure and very limited tourism services
  • Mangrove channels can be narrow and tricky to navigate
  • Tidal mudflats exposed at low tide can limit navigation and make boat access difficult.
  • Tidal currents in the estuary and around Carabane Island.
  • Mangrove channels and shoals require local knowledge.
  • Trees near the sandy beach launch are listed as a beach hazard.
  • Remote island logistics and no documented dedicated kite rescue infrastructure.
  • Low-lying island, with parts of the south reported as partly flooded during the rainy season.
  • Passport and identity checks happen on some Casamance island excursions.

Rider tips

  • Ride with a Cap Skirring or Casamance operator, or a boatman who knows the tide channels, before you go anywhere past the village beach.
  • Time the tide: low water exposes the mudflats and wrecks launches, landings and the boat pickup.
  • Expect around 0.6 m of tidal range on neaps and 1.2 m on springs, so a spring low takes far more water off the flats.
  • Bring repair parts, drinking water, sun cover and a way to call out; kite services on Carabane itself are not documented.
  • Come in the dry season. June-October is the rains in Basse-Casamance and the kiting tails off with them.
  • Do not read your riding line off a map: depending on tide and guide plan you end up on river, beach or bolong.

Getting there

Airport

Cap Skirring Airport is the nearest airport; Ziguinchor is another regional access point. Papayer states its Cap Skirring kite base is 10 minutes from Cap Skirring airport.

Route

Motorized pirogue is the normal way in, most often from Elinkine, about 30 minutes. Direct Ziguinchor-Carabane pirogues take 2-3 hours. The Dakar-Ziguinchor ferry Aline Sitoe Diatta has stopped at Carabane since 26 April 2014, but check the schedule before you build a trip on it.

Cost level

Staying

Basic island camps and small tourism services on Carabane and Elinkine. The kite-oriented places are in Cap Skirring, Papayer Ecolodge among them. A 2026 local ferry page gives Dakar-Ziguinchor cabin fares of 24,500-30,900 CFA depending on residency and class, which is not a full Carabane kitesurf trip cost.

No-wind days

pirogue trips through the mangroves/bolongs · birdwatching and fishing · walking the roadless island and village · historic colonial remains · Diola village/culture visits around lower Casamance · Cap Skirring beach time

What are the main hazards?

Extensive tidal mudflats that restrict boat access at low tide, measurable tidal currents around Carabane Island, and no documented dedicated kite rescue service.
