Cape Town - Cape Peninsula

wavesadvancedmid-range

2 spots

Platboom and Misty Cliffs are remote, high-consequence Cape Peninsula spots inside or near Table Mountain National Park, an hour to an hour and a half's drive from Cape Town city through genuinely spectacular but rugged coastline.
This is a destination for advanced-to-pro riders based in Cape Town who want serious, rocky, big-wave sessions as an add-on to a city trip — it does not suit beginners, and it is not a self-contained resort with its own infrastructure.

The spot cards

Good to know before you go2

  • Misty Cliffs has no beach launch of its own — riders set up at neighbouring Whitsands Beach and ride around to the rocky Misty Cliffs section, so know the access point in advance.
  • Both spots carry real injury/death-consequence hazards (rocks, cliffs, offshore sections, strong currents) and are described as unsuitable without advanced-to-pro kite skills.

The spots

  1. Platboom Beach

    waves

Platboom Beach is a wave mission inside the Cape of Good Hope and Cape Point section of Table Mountain National Park, about 65 km from central Cape Town and a long way from any help.

    advancedtight rigging room

    In seasonNov to Mar

The model here carries the month's average wind rather than a count of windy days: it reaches 19.1 kt in January, the strongest month it models for this spot.

Platboom Beach: the long version, the launch and the rules

    More on Platboom Beach

The bay is exposed and rocky: big fast waves break in front of rock, and there is only a sliver of sand to rig on and get in from. Clean set waves reach about 6 m when the swell is up. Summer wind is S to SE and nearly sideshore, with the Cape Doctor running up to about 40 knots; NW and cross-off gives the cleaner down-the-line riding. No Cape Point beach has lifeguards and the rip at neighbouring Diaz Beach is strong, so self-rescue is the plan by default. You are also on park time, and a late exit inside Cape Point is a real problem. Baboons will go through an open car.

    Getting on the water

Rigging is on the beach, but the beach is a sliver of sand between sandstone and rock. Follow the reserve road toward Cape of Good Hope almost to its end and you pass the launch, at the point where the waves break best. In north-westerly wind the northern end of the bay at Diaz Beach is the reported alternative launch, though nothing confirms it is still used that way.

    If it goes wrong

Cape Point beaches, managed by SANParks, have no lifeguards; no dedicated kite rescue is confirmed.

    Rules and access

2026: Platboom sits inside the Cape of Good Hope and Cape Point section of Table Mountain National Park, so you pay at the gate and ride on park hours. Gates run 06:00-18:00 from October to March and 07:00-17:00 from April to September, with exit by sunset; vehicles leaving after closing are fined. Adult entry is R110 for South African citizens (2026, ID or passport required), R225 for SADC nationals (2026) and R515 for international visitors (2026), on rates valid 1 November 2025 to 31 October 2026. A 60 km/h speed limit applies throughout the reserve. SANParks indemnity and access conditions apply and some park activities need permits, but no kitesurfing or windsurfing permit beyond normal entry has been found.

  2. Misty Cliffs

    waves

Misty Cliffs is on the Atlantic side of the Cape Peninsula between Witsands and Scarborough, and it is not a beach you learn anything on.

    advancedlimited rigging room

    In seasonOct to Mar

The model here carries the month's average wind rather than a count of windy days: it reaches 17.5 kt in January, the strongest month it models for this spot.

Misty Cliffs: the long version, the launch and the rules

    More on Misty Cliffs

The shore is boulders and rock along most of its length, with cliffs behind and kelp downwind, and what limits access through the village is the rock itself. You do not rig at Misty Cliffs: gear goes up at Witsands and you sail upwind to the break. The season is the Cape summer window, roughly October to March, on the south-easter or Cape Doctor, which blows offshore to cross-offshore here, plus the occasional frontal NW. Water is cold all year; late-August 2026 readings sat around 14.5-15 C. The trap is the inside, where the wind goes weak and turbulent near the cliffs while the waves outside stay heavy, so a mistake leaves you swimming toward rock. Sharks have been sighted along this stretch. There are no lifeguards and no rescue arrangement anyone has confirmed.

    Getting on the water

Misty Cliffs itself is rock, and you cannot rig on it. Gear goes up at Witsands beach and you sail upwind to reach the break. Descriptions that point to Scarborough's sandy beach are talking about the wider Cape Peninsula wave coast, not this spot. Access inside the village is limited by the shore, not by a posted restriction.

    If it goes wrong

No kite rescue, no lifeguards, no facilities. Sea rescue on this coast is the volunteer National Sea Rescue Institute: Station 26 Kommetjie covers the stretch from Kommetjie down past Slangkop and Cape Point, emergency 082 990 5979, the NSRI emergency line is 087 094 9774, and 112 works from any mobile. Nobody is watching the water, so the plan is a buddy on the beach, a phone that has signal at the car, and a self-rescue you have thought through before you go out.

    Rules and access

2026: no Misty Cliffs kite permit or formal kite zone is published. Misty Cliffs Beach is managed by the City of Cape Town rather than Table Mountain National Park, so no TMNP permit applies; the City listing shows parking as the only facility and names fishing and angling as a permitted activity, with nothing kite-specific. The Coastal By-law, 2020 is still current in the City's by-law list as updated on 26 June 2026, so obey posted signage, closures and authorised officials. Since the practical launch is Witsands, upwind of Misty Cliffs, check access there before rigging.

Getting there & around

  • Cape Town International Airport (CPT)
Car neededYes — both spots are reached via the scenic Peninsula road network, with Misty Cliffs/Scarborough roughly 100 km and 1.5 hours south of central Cape Town, and Platboom inside the Cape of Good Hope section of Table Mountain National Park.
Road quirksDriving is on the left. The Cape Point/Cape of Good Hope section has resident baboon troops known to approach vehicles and open unlocked doors for food — keep cars locked and don't feed them.

Practical

LanguageMultiple official languages in the Cape Town area, with Afrikaans, Xhosa and English all widely spoken.
MoneySouth African Rand (ZAR)
SafetyBoth spots are explicitly advanced-only: Platboom is remote, rocky and exposed inside a national park with big clean set waves (up to roughly 6 m) and strong Cape Doctor wind gusting to around 40 knots; Misty Cliffs has a rocky shoreline (kiters rig at neighbouring Whitsands Beach instead), powerful swell and strong currents, with the warning that a dropped kite that can't be relaunched quickly leaves a rider stranded on the rocks.Cape Town broadly has real crime/safety considerations to be aware of as in any large city.
HealthWater is cold on the Atlantic side (roughly 13–16°C in summer per general Cape Peninsula knowledge, not independently confirmed here) — a good wetsuit matters.
Costsmid
Seasons beyond windThe supported kite season for Misty Cliffs is the Cape summer, roughly October to March, which is also the Cape Doctor wind season and the region's dry, warm tourist high season; Cape Town winters (June–September) bring cold fronts and rain.

What riders say

5 recurring claims

  1. These are advanced-rider wave spots, not Cape Town backup beaches for improvers. Every useful spot note puts Misty Cliffs and Platboom in the experienced-only bucket.

    consensus×5 riders

  2. Platboom is the more remote-feeling mission: inside the reserve, isolated, rocky, sometimes huge, and you pay to get in before you even rig.

    consensus×5 riders

  3. Misty Cliffs gets its reputation from big kickers and dramatic coastline, but riders should read that as consequence: weak inside wind, cliffs, rocks, and heavy waves all show up in the warnings.

    consensus×4 riders

  4. The best days are proper Cape Doctor or northwest wave days, not casual all-wind conditions. The same wind that makes the spots work can make them too strong, gusty, or offshore in places.

    majority×4 riders

  5. There is much less rider chatter than for Blouberg. The clearest public evidence is from spot guides, school pages, video posts, and scattered comments that mention the spots as known advanced Cape Town missions.

Scene & life

VibeNot a kite-town scene at all — Kommetjie/Scarborough are quiet residential villages, and the real social and nightlife options are back in Cape Town city.
Activities
  • visiting the Cape of Good Hope / Cape Point lighthouse and funicular
  • surfing (Kommetjie is a well-known surf break)
  • crayfishing where quotas allow
  • birdwatching and spotting baboon troops around Kommetjie's Milkwood groves
  • hiking Table Mountain National Park trails
Day trips
  • Cape Point / Cape of Good Hope
  • Simon's Town and the Boulders Beach penguin colony area (general Peninsula knowledge, not independently confirmed in sourcing)
Pairs withA Cape Town city stay — Table Mountain, the V&A Waterfront and the Winelands are the natural pairing for rest days.

The Cape Town Cycle Tour route passes through Kommetjie annually.

History & trivia

Scene & life

  • The old Cape Point lighthouse (1860–1919) sat at 262 m and was often obscured by cloud; after the liner Lusitania wrecked on Bellows Rock in 1911, a new lighthouse was built lower down at 87 m in 1919 for better visibility.
  • Kommetjie was founded in 1902 by businessmen developers and only got electricity and municipal running water in the 1960s.
  • Kommetjie's name is Afrikaans for 'small basin.'

Itinerary idea

Base in Cape Town city, treat Platboom and Misty Cliffs as advanced-rider day trips down the Peninsula, and build the rest of the stay around Cape Town's city and Winelands attractions.
