Blouberg – Big Bay, Cape Town

• Langebaan is ~1 hour north via the West Coast National Park shortcut, and the Shark Bay launch there has had a toilet block, showers and a cafe since 2021 - it is no longer a bare-dune day trip.

Before you book

• SACAA rules make casual drone filming of your own session at Big Bay effectively illegal: private flight requires the aircraft to be registered, must stay 50 m from any person or group, under 150 ft, in visual line of sight, and never within 10 km of an aerodrome without approval. Any footage used commercially requires a UAS Operating Certificate.
• Netcare Blaauwberg Hospital has a 24-hour A&E, an on-site 911 ambulance base and a helipad, ~2 km off the R27 from Big Bay - a genuinely short trauma chain by kite-destination standards.
• Cape Point conservation fees for 1 Nov 2025 - 31 Oct 2026: international adult R515, SADC adult R225, SA citizen R110. The Flying Dutchman funicular (R115 adult return) is closed for maintenance 20 July - 31 August 2026, with a shuttle replacing it.
• Melkbos and Van Strand, ~12 minutes north of Big Bay, are the NW-wind fallback: they are most popular when the wind switches round to the north-west, exactly the condition that kills the Blouberg-corridor beaches. Knowing this single alternative is what a rental car buys you.
• Cape Town Kite Club, 92 Sir David Baird Drive, is ~80 m from the Big Bay launch with seven private-bathroom rooms plus a dorm, pool, large self-catering kitchen, fibre-to-the-house, solar with battery backup, and a separate braai room fitted out as a call/work room for remote workers.
• Dolphin Beach Hotel at 1 Marine Drive, Table View has direct beach access onto the Dolphin Beach/Kite Beach launch, with 60 m2 four-sleeper apartments (full kitchen, aircon, WiFi), a 75 m2 six-sleeper beachfront cabana with its own braai, a pool and The Blowfish restaurant on site.

• Local kite-size guidance for the spot: an 85 kg freestyle rider brings a 7 m and a 10 m; a separate spot guide suggests 7 m + 9 m for men and 5 m + 8 m for women. High season (Oct-Mar) is quoted at 25-45 knots with ~95% wind probability against 10-20 knots and ~45% in Apr-Sep.
• The tightest wind windows named by a resident operator are the start of November to about 9-10 December, and February into early March - November, December and January have equal wind, but the first and last of those windows dodge the mid-Dec to mid-Jan price and crowd spike.

• The reliable summer southeaster is locally nicknamed the 'Cape Doctor' for supposedly blowing pollution and illness out of the old city - the same wind that now defines the kite/windsurf season.
• Bloubergstrand and Big Bay grew into a windsurfing hub in the 1980s-90s before the 2000s kitesurfing boom took over the same beaches.
• Red Bull King of the Air relaunched here in 2013 after an eight-year hiatus from its original Ho'okipa, Maui venue, and the event site itself moved to Blouberg in 2018; it now draws over 7,000 spectators a day.
• The consistently strong, clean wind is exactly why Big Bay became a global proving ground for the big-air discipline of kitesurfing.
