The Cape Doctor is light or absent in the morning and builds through the day, often strongest from around 16:00 or 17:00 until sunset. Sunset Beach is said to switch on earlier and cleaner than the beaches farther north, which is why downwinders start here, but no station on this beach confirms the hour.

The spot

Sunset Beach is the upwind end of the Table Bay chain, before Dolphin Beach, Kite Beach, Doodles, Big Bay, Haakgat and Melkbos. Open Atlantic sand backed by dunes, several beachfront car parks, cold water, and surf that runs small to medium until the swell comes up and turns it powerful.

Wind and downwind options

The reason people start here is the SE: it often fills in earlier than the beaches farther north, so downwinders to Kite Beach, Doodles, Big Bay or Haakgat begin on this sand. In a normal Cape Doctor it blows side-off and gusty right at the beach, which is why it is a poor independent beginner choice however it gets listed elsewhere.

When to come

Learn somewhere else. Come in the southern-hemisphere summer, November to March; January and February are the windiest and the busiest. Bring a long wetsuit, small kites for the strong days, and the assumption that nobody is on standby to come and get you.

Side-off in the summer south-easter: the wind reaches the sand over the dunes and the houses, so it is gusty at the launch and smoother once you are out. A south-westerly puts it side-on instead and is cited as a good direction here, though it brings more swell with it.

Currents

Rip currents are the hazard here: teenagers were swept away at Sunset Beach, Milnerton in a 2022 incident, and rips have caused rescues and a fatality on the neighbouring Milnerton sand. Since November 2024 the national weather service publishes a rip-current forecast for six high-risk Cape beaches, including Milnerton and Blouberg either side of this one.

Emergency response

What exists is emergency response: 112 from a mobile, or the NSRI emergency line on 087 094 9774, with NSRI's Table Bay and Melkbosstrand stations covering this coast.

Milnerton Surf Lifesaving Club runs volunteer lifeguards on Milnerton beach to the south and pulled two teenagers out of a rip there in January 2026; NSRI pink rescue buoys are placed along this shoreline and bystanders have used them in Milnerton rip incidents.

Sandy open beach launch reached from the R27/Marine Drive Sunset Beach entrance, with access roads from the suburb and about five beachfront parking areas; rigging is on the beach. The beach is usually wide enough for launching, with a local Parking 1 spot near the beach.

2026: no kitesurf-specific launch zone, exclusion zone or permit is published for Sunset Beach, Milnerton. The City of Cape Town Coastal By-law, 2020 is still current (last updated 26 June 2026) and governs beach use across the city, so obey posted signage, closures and authorised officials. No separate Sunset Beach kite ordinance is published.

Rider tips

Start a downwinder toward Blouberg or Milnerton only with a group, a lift back and an exit in mind; the rock and cliff sections farther north are not for inexperienced riders.
Compare the nearby Table Bay and Kite Beach readings, then look at the water. No wind station reports from Sunset itself.
Rig smaller than the forecast suggests once the Cape Doctor builds: typical Cape Town summer SE afternoons run 15-30 knots, and a normal SE session is reported stronger.
Do not read the wide empty beach as beginner-proof. The cold water, the rips, the gusts and the shore break all raise the price of a mistake.
If the beach is empty or the conditions look marginal, drive on to a busier supervised beach. Local guidance here is not to go out alone.
Pack a 4/3 even in summer if you feel the cold; sustained SE drives upwelling and the nearshore water drops.
Mornings are usually the quiet part of the day. The wind tends to arrive later and peak from about 16:00 to sunset.

From central Cape Town, take the N1 to the R27 Paarden Island/Milnerton turnoff, continue on Marine Drive, enter Sunset Beach, then use the first or second roads left to the beachfront parking/launch. A similar R27 approach via the Sunset Beach sign near the Engen petrol station also works.A rental car is useful for downwinders and alternate Cape spots; Uber and MyCiTi Bus can also work for getting around and downwinder logistics.

23-30 minutes by car from CPT in normal traffic; the road distance is quoted at 21 km / 23 min, and 22 km from the airport to the kite house at Sunset Beach

Sunset Beach has kite-specific accommodation, including a kite house 100 m from the sand, plus villas and guesthouses in the suburb. Blouberg and Table View, a few kilometres north, have more kite schools, apartments, restaurants and beach amenities.

No-wind days

Beaches, nature, Table Mountain, the shopping, the food and the tours fill a no-wind day, and the schools put on organised activities. When the summer SE is really on, the sheltered options are Clifton or Hout Bay.
