The spot

Witsand is flat water behind a sandy spit at the mouth of the Breede River estuary, and the flat is the real thing: the sandbar keeps the sea out, and at low tide more sandbars come up and the slick gets bigger. Walk across the spit and there is an ocean side with small to medium waves for a kicker or a proper wave session.

Wind and season

The wind is easterly to south-easterly and the season is centred on October to March, best in January and February.

Hazards and currents

In that SE the river side is offshore to side-off, which is what the easier listings gloss over, along with the tidal current in the channels, the shifting banks and the fact that nobody is coming to fetch you.

Sharks and water temperature

Bull sharks live in the estuary; no attacks have been reported and riders still call it sharky. Water runs 22 C in summer and 16 C in winter, so a 3/2 mm or a shorty covers most of the season.

It is about 250 km and 4 hours from Cape Town, which makes Witsand a weekend rather than an afternoon.

Rules & access

2026: no kite-specific permit, licence or zone is enforceable at the Breede River mouth. The river management by-law registers and licenses only power boats over 15 hp, and canoes, rowing boats and sailboards are explicitly outside it; swimming is restricted to areas marked by notice boards. Wake-generating boat sport is prohibited along the full length of the estuary, and there is no skiing below the Slangrivier confluence, a zoning enacted in Western Cape Provincial Gazette No 6697 of 12 February 2010.

Proposed zone

A dedicated kitesurfing, windsurfing and sailing zone for the lower estuary was proposed in the February 2024 draft revised estuarine management plan — western boundary 50 m from the Government Slipway on the east bank, running diagonally across to the Aasbank parking area on the west bank — on safety and user-conflict grounds, but it is a recommendation to be written into the by-law and is not yet in force.

Environmental concerns

The same plan flags white-fronted plovers nesting at Skuitbaai and on the surrounding sandbanks, and asks for monitoring of recreational foot traffic there.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

Check the tide before you rig and never leave gear low on the beach: the water can come right up to the dunes.
Ride the river side knowing the SE is offshore to side-off there. The ocean side is the onshore one.
Treat the channel current and the shifting sandbars as the session risk, not the wind.
Take the R322 turnoff from the N2, not the R324, unless you want to use the pont.
Book a night or two in Witsand: 250 km and about 4 hours each way does not work as a day trip from Cape Town.
Do not confuse this with the Witsands next to Misty Cliffs and Scarborough on the Cape Peninsula.
Stay off Skuitbaai and the bare sandbanks by the mouth on foot. Plovers nest there and the estuary plan is watching the disturbance.
The wind is not on a timetable. A forecast of 20 knots at 16:00 usually means it, and the wind can go on getting stronger after sunset.
