On the clock

17:00

South wind may not push through until around 17:00. No onset time is confirmed for W/NW days.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Hermanus Lagoon is the Klein River Estuary behind Grotto Beach, and the pairing is the reason to come: flat brackish water on one side of the sand strip, Atlantic waves on the other. The lagoon is shallow and kind to beginners on the right day, and it is good freestyle water. Wind direction changes the whole safety picture.
West and northwest blow clean but offshore off the lagoon, while southeast and east-southeast come in cross-onshore on the lagoon and cross-offshore on the ocean. Lagoon size and water state move with rainfall, seasonal levels and the periodic breaching of the mouth; a natural breach was documented in 2025, and once it opens the lagoon runs tidal.
Pick the launch and the direction with local advice rather than assuming every windy day is beginner-safe.

fills in: South wind may not push through until around 17:00. No onset time is confirmed for W/NW days.

Typical strength

SE steady to about 25 knots. A second figure of 18-25 knots for the October-March high season circulates, with no station statistics behind it.

West is the cleanest lagoon wind and also blows offshore off the lagoon. SE holds steady up to about 25 knots but turns cross-onshore and gustier over the land. SW is gusty on the lagoon itself and better spent on the waves.
The main season runs October or November through March. The summer SE/ESE and W/NW setups get used differently: flat water on the lagoon, waves on the ocean, or both in one session depending on direction.

The quiver, in words

Nothing published by the local schools. Indicative for a 75-85 kg rider: 12 m for the lighter W and NW sessions, 9 m through a steady SE, 7 m when the SE sits at its 25-knot top end. Derived from the reported wind range rather than from local practice.

Direction to shore

Depends on the wind: W is offshore on the lagoon, SE/ESE is cross-onshore on the lagoon and cross-offshore on the ocean.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Type

lagoon

Standing depth

Waist-deep water is used for lessons in the Klein River and Bot River lagoons, but the standing-depth zones at the kite launch have not been mapped.

Tides

The estuary sits closed behind a sand berm for long stretches and runs tidal only once the mouth is open. The last natural breach came on 13 August 2025, between 05:00 and 06:00, when the level peaked against the berm. Unauthorised breaching is patrolled and stopped, so the opening date is not something you can plan around.

Temperature

18-20°C summer · 15-16°C winter

Wetsuit

Bring a wetsuit, above all if you are riding the ocean too. The lagoon is warm; the sea is not boardshort water and sits near 15 C in winter.

Currents

Current picks up while the mouth is open or actively breaching, and settles again once the estuary closes. No measured figure has ever been published for the kite area.

15–19°C water
Brackish lagoon behind Grotto Beach with flat water; lagoon size and water state vary with rainfall, breaching and season.

Your level

beginnerintermediateadvanced
The flat lagoon is used for lessons and is kind to beginners; the ocean side is wave riding for stronger riders. West wind is offshore on the lagoon, so a beginner riding alone should wait for cross-onshore or go out with an instructor.

Rescue

No dedicated kite rescue and no standing safety boat on the lagoon; the two schools are the practical cover, and only while they are out. Sea rescue for the coast runs from the NSRI base at Hermanus. The numbers to have in your phone are 112 for the national emergency line and 087 094 9774 for the NSRI operations centre.

Launch

Rig on the sand at the Klein River Lagoon or on the braai side of Grotto Beach. Both give a wide open area to launch and land. The narrow top of the lagoon next to the viewing area is where the trick rotation sits; the riding opens up downwind of it.

Hazards riders report 8

  • exposed ocean sections nearby have strong swells and currents
  • cold water
  • Offshore lagoon wind in west wind; only suitable for riders who can ride safely upwind.
  • Crowded narrow trick-rotation area at the top of the lagoon
  • Lagoon size and depth change with rainfall, seasonal water level and breaching
  • Currents and changed water state when the lagoon mouth is open
  • Ocean side has bigger shorebreak/waves and colder water
  • Cold winter water
Rules & access
2025: the Klein Estuary was monitored ahead of its natural breach and patrols stopped unauthorised breaching. No kite permit or zone rule is published.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • In west wind, ride only if you can hold upwind or you have an instructor on the water; it blows straight off the lagoon.
  • Take the wider downwind part of the lagoon unless you are in the trick rotation at the narrow top by the viewing area.
  • Check whether the estuary mouth is open before you count on flat, non-tidal water.
  • Pack a wetsuit if you are crossing to the ocean side or riding in winter; the sea sits near 15 C.
  • On a south wind, plan something else for the afternoon; it may not push through until around 17:00.
