The spot

Milnerton is where the Diep River and the Milnerton Lagoon empty into Table Bay, the first kite beach you reach driving north out of central Cape Town. Shallow flat water sits by the mouth, roughly the first 50 m, then small to medium waves outside.

Wind

SW is the direction that works: side-on to a northwest-facing beach, with room to get back in.

Skill level

The summer SE, the Cape Doctor, comes offshore to cross-off at this launch and gusty with it, so treat Milnerton as an intermediate-plus river mouth rather than the easy beginner lagoon it is sometimes made out to be.

Water conditions

The lagoon water itself is signposted as not suitable for recreational activities: closed to the public in 2022 on those grounds, with December 2025 monitoring keeping the restriction standing. Cold Atlantic water year round, current that picks up at the outlet, rocks that show near the northern area at low tide.

When the wind angle or the water quality looks wrong, drive on to Sunset, Dolphin/Kite Beach or Big Bay.

The beach faces roughly west-northwest. The prevailing summer SE crosses the land and arrives offshore to cross-off, which is the angle that gets people into trouble here. SW is side-on and the comfortable one, S is side-off, NW comes straight onshore.

Do not use it that way unless a local school confirms the lagoon is legal and clean to ride, since the signage calls the water unsuitable for recreational activities and the prevailing SE is offshore and gusty.

Rescue

No kite rescue. Lifeguards cover the designated swimming areas at Milnerton Beach only, and they are not there for someone half a kilometre out. NSRI's emergency operations centre is 087 094 9774; 112 is the national emergency number.

On an offshore SE, going out with nobody watching from the beach is the mistake that gets riders picked up here.

Launch

Come in on Boundary Road or Lagoon Beach Drive to the parking by the beach and rig on the sand. You launch straight off the beach near the river, in a decent space that gets tight when the beach is busy.

Lagoon restriction

2026: the lagoon itself stays restricted for recreational contact under standing signage calling the water not suitable for recreational activities. It was closed to the public on those grounds in 2022 and City monitoring in December 2025 kept the restriction in place, with hydrogen sulphide air quality tracked separately and reported safe.

Open beach

The open beach and river mouth outside the closed lagoon carry no kite permit, launch zone or seasonal restriction: the City lists Milnerton Beach as a lifeguarded beach with parking and toilets where water sports are one of the named uses, and where dogs are allowed off-lead.

Swimming areas

Lifeguards supervise designated swimming areas, so stay clear of the flagged zone, and keep out of lagoon water.

Finish a Big Bay-to-Milnerton downwinder here; it is the standard end point coming down the coast.
Check the current City of Cape Town water-quality notices and the on-site signage before any contact with lagoon water, and skip the sheltered lagoon on light-wind days unless a local confirms it is clean.
Ride SW; treat SE as offshore and gusty and stay off it unless you know you can hold upwind.

Drive, taxi or Uber from CPT toward Milnerton and Lagoon Beach via the R27 and Marine Drive; local access is off Boundary Road or Lagoon Beach Drive to the beachfront parking and rigging area. Rent a car. Cape Town kiting means chasing spots by forecast and getting picked up at the end of downwinders.

Transfer

About 19 minutes by car from CPT to Lagoon Beach Hotel in clear conditions; allow 45-60 minutes from Cape Town to the main Blouberg kiting base in traffic.
