Langebaan Lagoon
Langebaan Lagoon is a large, shallow saltwater lagoon inside the West Coast National Park, about an hour's drive north of Cape Town. Warmed and calmed relative to the cold, exposed Atlantic outside, and famed for the same strong, reliable South Easter that powers Cape Town's kite scene, it is widely regarded as South Africa's premier beginner and freestyle/freeride lagoon, with vast sand-bank shallows and formally zoned areas for different water sports.

Wind
| best months |
|
|---|---|
| season notes | South African summer (Nov-Mar) brings the strong, thermally-reinforced South Easter ('Cape Doctor') trade-wind system shared with the Cape Town/Blouberg area, which can blow reliably for days at a time; winter is generally lighter and less consistent. |
| avg knots | 20-30 |
| wind name | Cape Doctor / South Easter |

Water
| type | lagoon |
|---|---|
| wetsuit | The lagoon is warmer than the open Atlantic but still cooled by the Benguela current; a shorty or 3/2 wetsuit is typical even in summer |
| tides | Daily tides bring cold, nutrient-rich Benguela current water into the lagoon; the lagoon is completely open to the sea and only about 6m at its deepest point, so large sandbank areas are exposed and covered through the tide cycle |
| currents | Noticeable tidal currents, especially near the channel toward Saldanha Bay |
| standing depth | Extensive shallow, standing-depth sandbank areas, especially near the town beach at low-to-mid tide |
Levels

| notes | The shallow standing-depth water near the town beach is ideal for lessons and first independent sessions; the open lagoon and consistent wind also make it a serious freestyle and freeride training ground. |

Monthly wind statistics
Station: Vredenburg (weatherspark, ~21 km) — Windfinder has a working forecast page for Langebaan itself (windfinder.com/forecast/langebaan, station 'Langebaan Roodevos', with a windstatistics link) but its monthly table is JS-rendered and not extractable via available fetch tools - same issue seen across this whole batch. WeatherSpark has no dedicated Langebaan or Saldanha Bay page, so used the nearest WeatherSpark station, Vredenburg (~21 km NW of Langebaan lagoon, same open, flat West Coast terrain). Exact wind speed given only for windiest (Jan, 14.1 mph) and calmest (May, 10.2 mph) months; dominant_dir approximated from stated seasonal ranges (S Jul24-May29, N May29-Jul24). Note Langebaan's famous flat-water lagoon/thermal wind behavior is a local effect this regional station cannot fully capture.

Hazards
- tidal currents, especially on the outgoing tide near the channel
- cold Benguela-current water
- boat traffic in the powerboating zone near town
Rules
- The lagoon is a marine protected area split into zones: Zone A (town area) permits kitesurfing and powerboating; Zone B (Churchhaven area) is limited to sailboats and board sailing only; Zone C (near Geelbek) restricts recreational water sport activity - kite within Zone A.
