On the clock

08:00 · 11:00 · 16:00 · 17:00 · 18:00

An afternoon spot. Modelled hourly means for the point sit near 8 knots at 08:00, cross 10 around midday and top out between 16:00 and 18:00; in the November-February season the build is steeper, from about 9 knots at 11:00 to 15 knots by 17:00, and it holds into the evening. The direction moves with it, S through the middle of the day and swinging toward SE later, which is the swing that turns the bay offshore. Model figures, indicative rather than measured.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Paternoster is a West Coast fishing village with a wave spot for riders who already know what they are doing. It works when swell lines up with SW wind: clean lefts and rights toward Stompneus Bay, often standing up just north of the cliff by the parking or in the middle of the bay, breaking close to shore.
SW is the quality direction, called onshore in one account and side or side-on in another; NW also rides. The common SE on this coast is the trap here, offshore or side-off, gusty, and not a wind to be on the water in. Cold water all year, rocks in part of the riding area and no dedicated kite rescue.
You will usually share the bay with a handful of kites or nobody at all, far fewer than Cape Town or Langebaan, which is the appeal and also the catch, because there is no one to come and get you. If the forecast shows SE, go to Langebaan instead.

Typical strength

SW days that make the spot worth driving to are usually over 20 knots. Indicative modelled hourly data for the point, 2021-2025: daytime hours reach 12 knots or more on 57-58% of hours from November to February and 20-28% from May to August, the median daily maximum is around 14 knots, and the strongest hours cluster in the afternoon. Grid figures, not a local measurement.

SW is the good one, side to side-on and better spread, and it reads as onshore on the main beach. S can be gusty but stays usable for expert riders. SE is side-off to offshore, gusty and dangerous for normal kitesurfing.
October to March is the Cape wind season, and January, February, March, November and December are the best months for the wider Langebaan area. Paternoster runs on condition matching rather than a dependable season: you need swell plus SW or NW, while the common SE setup is offshore here.

The quiver, in words

Indicative, no local measurement. The SW wave day it is known for is a 7-9 m for a 75-85 kg rider, and 6 m when it is properly on in December or January. Lighter NW or early-afternoon sessions ask for 10-12 m, and on a wave board most riders take a size below their flat-water kite.

Direction to shore

cross-on

Dominant direction

S is what actually blows: modelled 2021-2025 data puts about 55% of all hours at 13 knots or more in the S sector, with SSE and SSW next and SW well behind. That matters because S is side-off here, SE is offshore, and SW, the one direction that lines up cleanly with the swell, is a minority of the strong wind. NW also rides. Indicative model figures, no local measurement.

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Standing depth

Not a standing-depth spot. Open ocean shelving into the break: the swell stands up roughly 100-150 m out and breaks around 50 m from the beach, and there is no shallow shelf to walk out on or to rig in. Underwater rocks sit within about 20 m of the cliff by the parking area and are worst at low tide.

Tides

No kite-specific best tide is published. Tides run regular highs and lows, with the 2026 range at the Paternoster station going from a 2.1 m maximum high to a -0.3 m minimum.

Temperature

Summer 15.5 average in summer; the warmest monthly average is 16.7 C in December.

Winter 13.7 average in winter; the coldest monthly average is 13.7 C in July.

Wetsuit

Always needed; use at least a full suit, since water temperature at Paternoster stays mostly in the low-to-mid teens Celsius.

Ocean beach and point: small waves with flat sections between them. Clean lefts and rights when swell lines up with SW wind, standing up just north of the cliff by the parking area or sometimes mid-bay, breaking close to shore. There are rocks in part of the riding area.

Expert spot. Paternoster suits advanced riders only, because it depends on swell and comes with side-off and offshore risk and gusty directions.

The scene

What riders come here for

Quiet West Coast alternative. When it works you will likely share it with a handful of kites and nobody else on the water. Paternoster is a popular holiday village, so the beach itself gets busier over holiday periods.

Rescue

No dedicated kitesurf rescue is on record. Lifeguards were posted at Paternoster Beach under the Saldanha Bay Municipality beach-safety arrangement for 2025-2026, with NSRI on 082 990 5966; that is beach cover, not kite cover.

Launch

Drive in via Vredenburg. Turn at the four-way stop in Paternoster, head for the beach, park where the residential houses end and rig on the sand. The more specific approach runs via Mosselbank Strand and Langstrand Road to the parking near the cliff, with the water entry on the beach north of that parking.

Hazards riders report 14

  • SE wind is offshore, gusty and considered dangerous here (opposite of the favourable SW onshore setup)
  • SE wind is offshore or side-off/offshore, gusty and dangerous for normal kitesurfing at Paternoster.
  • Rocks are reported in part of the riding area.
  • Cold Atlantic water; wetsuit needed year-round.
  • Fast, clean waves can break close to shore and require advanced wave-riding judgment.
  • No dedicated kitesurf rescue on record; avoid offshore-direction sessions without local support.
  • SE is offshore and gusty here, and it is also the direction that blows most often on this coast; it is not a riding wind at Paternoster.
  • S wind is side-off and gusty, usable only by riders who can self-rescue in it.
  • Underwater rocks within about 20 m of the cliff by the parking area, worst at low tide.
  • Rocks in parts of the riding area away from the cliff.
  • Fast clean waves breaking around 50 m from the beach; little room to fix a mistake.
  • Cold Atlantic water all year, low to mid teens; a full wetsuit is not optional.
  • No dedicated kite rescue. On a side-off or offshore day nobody is coming for you.
  • Holiday-season crowds on the beach itself, which is where you rig.
Rules & access
2022 Saldanha Bay public amenities by-law: kite flying, windsurfing and kitesurfing are among the activities the municipality may allow or prohibit on any beach, dam or river under its control, and the notice board at the entrance carries what applies on the day, with contravening it an offence.
No Paternoster-specific kite ban, zone or permit appears anywhere in the by-law text. 2025-2026 summer season: municipal lifeguards were posted at Paternoster Beach; stay out of flagged bathing areas.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Check wind and swell together; SW plus swell is the only combination that makes the drive worth it.
  • Treat SE as a no-go unless you are an expert with local support and a self-rescue plan you have actually used.
  • Launch off the beach north of the parking near the cliff, and walk the water line for rocks before you ride.
  • Bring a full wetsuit even in summer; the water sits in the low-to-mid teens all year.
  • If Paternoster is SE and offshore, drive to Langebaan or another West Coast or Cape Town spot built for the SE season.

FAQ

When is the best time to kite at Paternoster?

There is no dependable season; the spot works only when swell lines up with SW or NW wind, so condition matching matters more than a calendar window.

Is Paternoster suitable for beginners?

No, multiple sources classify Paternoster as expert-only because of its reliance on swell, offshore/side-off risk and gusty wind directions.

What is the wind like at Paternoster?

SW is the best-quality direction, described as onshore or side-on; SE, the coast's usual direction, is offshore or side-off here and considered dangerous for normal kitesurfing.

What hazards should riders know about?

Rocks are present in part of the riding area, the water is cold year-round, and no dedicated kitesurf rescue was verified.
