Getting on the water Rules & access Wind Water

Körmen is the Datça peninsula's north-coast spot, the bay beside the Bodrum ferry landing, facing straight into the Gulf of Gökova. Chop and small waves on open water, and a narrow pebble strip to rig on: this is not a beginner lagoon.

Wind conditions

The Meltem arrives W to NW, builds from late morning, and sits at 18-25 knots by mid-afternoon, gusty because the flow tumbles off the steep ground behind the bay. May to September is the season and July-August the strongest part of it, when days over 30 knots turn up.

The main risk

The wind is cross-offshore to offshore, which is the whole risk here: there is no beach downwind to be blown onto, only the gulf, and there is no lifeguard, no rescue boat and no club on the sand. Bring the small kite and sea shoes.

Who should go

Come if you are an independent intermediate or better who wants exposed wind and empty water, and take lessons at the school beaches on the other side of the peninsula instead.

Kormen is a working ferry and marina port, so the pier, the ferry channel and the marina approach are off limits in practice regardless of what is written down, and swimmers and other beach users have priority on the strip between June and October.
