2 spots · 3 schools

This is the southern Bodrum peninsula around Turgutreis and Akyarlar: an established windsurf hub since 1993 with a small, separate kite beach tucked beside it, set inside ordinary Turkish package-resort infrastructure rather than a dedicated kite camp.
It suits riders happy with an afternoon-only thermal, a small shared beach, and real town life a short drive away; it does not suit anyone chasing all-day wind or a wave/freestyle scene.

The spot cards

Good to know before you go4

  • The windsurf beach and the kite beach at Fener/Akyarlar are physically separate strips of sand - the main beach is reserved for windsurfers and sunbathers.
  • Wind is thermal and effectively afternoon-only, strongest May-August; don't plan around all-day sessions or count on reliable wind from September on.
  • Rescue/assistance from the water at Fener has historically been a paid service (around EUR 20), not something automatically included.
  • Kitesurfing permits or membership in a local kite organization may be required at some Turkish beaches - worth checking before rigging.

The spots

  1. Akyarlar

    beginner ok

Akyarlar, sometimes written Akyarlar - Karadag Beach, is a small bay near Turgutreis on the southern Bodrum peninsula: clear water, a narrow sand strip, restaurants along the shore.

Akyarlar: the long version, the launch and the rules

    More on Akyarlar

It works as a windsurf and family beach first, with the school teaching in the protected shallows on the afternoon Meltemi. For kiting the case is thinner. NW arrives over the land and comes in gusty, cleaning up only out toward the rocky headland, and the beach is narrow and shared with swimmers. Monthly averages sit at 4-6 kt; the better months are June and July, with October better still, which tells you how few properly powered days there are. Summer water is 24-26 C and winter 17-18 C, so boardshorts for most of the year and a full suit in the cold months. Some riders here skip Akyarlar in summer and wait for the winter southerlies and the waves that come with them. Nobody has published a current kite launch zone for the bay, so ask a school on the day before you rig.

    Getting on the water

Narrow sandy beach inside Akyarlar Bay with school activity and public beach areas nearby.

    If it goes wrong

Akyarlar Windsurf runs boat support on longer windsurf runs once you are past the basics and conditions allow. There is no kite-specific rescue cover.

    Room to rig

Limited and shared; the bay is narrow in places and has restaurants/cafes and family beach users along the shore.

  2. Fener (Turgutreis, Bodrum)

Fener is the headland at Akyarlar on the south side of the Bodrum peninsula, a windsurf center since 1993 and still mostly a windsurf beach.

Fener (Turgutreis, Bodrum): the long version, the launch and the rules

    More on Fener (Turgutreis, Bodrum)

Kites do not use the main beach: that one is kept for windsurfers and sunbathers, and kiting happens from a small sandy strip just west around the headland. The strip is narrow and swimmers wander onto it, so it is a poor place to teach yourself. Wind is thermal Meltemi from NW/NNW, best from W-NW, accelerated by the headland, and August afternoons are the dependable ones. May to August is the kite window, while the breeze that made this a windsurf center runs May to October, six months of dry hot wind over warm sea; reliability after September is doubtful. Water is 24-26 C in summer and 17-18 C in winter, so no wetsuit from spring to autumn. Mandalin Kite School works the Fenerburnu area and takes beginners, but on the small west beach a first-timer alone is out of place. Rescue is informal: the windsurf school watches until about 18:00 and will send a boat for around EUR 20, unconfirmed for 2026, if you told them you were going out.

    Getting on the water

The main Fener beach is kept for windsurfers and sunbathers. Kites use a small narrow sandy beach just west, around the headland.

    If it goes wrong

Informal. The windsurf school keeps a lookout until about 18:00 and will send a boat for around EUR 20, unconfirmed for 2026, if you warned them you were going out. It does not watch the kite beach and can only pick up someone it happens to see drifting past. There is a first-aid point among the facilities on the main beach. Tell someone before you launch.

    Room to rig

Small but described as straightforward for launch and landing; take care around occasional swimmers/sunbathers.

    Rules and access

2026: the main beach is for windsurfers and sunbathers, and kites use the beach west of it. When the local rule was set is not stated.

  • Milas-Bodrum Airport (DLM), the peninsula's international gateway
  • Kos Island International Airport (Greece), about 70km southwest across the strait, an option for anyone island-hopping
Car neededyes
TransfersIndependent transfers from Milas-Bodrum Airport to the peninsula are thin: the Havas airport shuttle to Bodrum's intercity bus terminal was not running as of 2023, and the alternative bus service was described as spasmodic. From Bodrum town, the kite beach at Fener is roughly an hour away by taxi.

Seasons beyond windJune-October is the window for warm-water activities (sea temperatures above 24C); May suits land-based sightseeing. The season here runs longer than at other Turkish resorts thanks to the mild Aegean climate, and the kite/windsurf beach itself is liveliest May-August.

Scene & life

VibeFamily-oriented Turkish resort towns (Turgutreis, Akyarlar) rather than a kite scene; the loud nightlife is concentrated in Bodrum town proper, described as having rock bars, beach clubs and venues open to 3-5am.
Must try
  • Seafood, the dominant cuisine along the Bodrum peninsula
  • Pide and kebab as the budget everyday option
Rider hangoutsThe on-site restaurant/bar at Akyarlar (Karadag) beach
Activities
  • Bodrum Castle, built in 1402 by the Knights Hospitaller partly from stones of the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus
  • The ancient site of Halicarnassus / Mausoleum, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World
  • Boat tours and Blue Cruise sailing trips
  • Diving and snorkeling
Day trips
  • Bodrum town for the castle, marina and nightlife
  • Ferry across to Kos, Greece, from Turgutreis or Bodrum port
Pairs withAegean island-hopping - Turgutreis and Bodrum both run ferries to Kos, making this an easy add-on to a Greek-islands trip rather than only a standalone kite stop.

History & trivia

Scene & life

  • Turgutreis takes its name from Ottoman admiral Turgut Reis (Dragut), born in the area in 1485; the town, originally called Karatoprak, was renamed in his honour in 1972.
  • The windsurf center at Fener/Akyarlar dates to 1993, decades before kitesurfing existed as a discipline there - the kite beach is a later addition next to it, not the original draw.
  • Bodrum Castle was built in 1402 using stones from the ruined Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

Itinerary idea

Base in Turgutreis (or Bodrum town if nightlife matters more), ride the afternoon thermal at Akyarlar/Fener, and use mornings or a no-wind day for the castle, a Blue Cruise, or the ferry over to Kos.

What we could not settle. Ride here? These are the gaps worth filling.

  • Is 'Bodrum - Turgutreis' the name riders actually use for this area?
  • No confirmed shuttle/bus option from Milas-Bodrum Airport directly to Turgutreis/Akyarlar was found beyond a general, unreliable peninsula bus network
  • Is there kite-friendly lodging or a rider hangout at Turgutreis, beyond the Akyarlar beach restaurant?
  • Current TL price levels were not confidently dated given Turkish lira inflation, so specific price examples were left out
