Fener is the headland at Akyarlar on the south side of the Bodrum peninsula, a windsurf center since 1993 and still mostly a windsurf beach. Kites do not use the main beach: that one is kept for windsurfers and sunbathers, and kiting happens from a small sandy strip just west around the headland.
The strip is narrow and swimmers wander onto it, so it is a poor place to teach yourself. Wind is thermal Meltemi from NW/NNW, best from W-NW, accelerated by the headland, and August afternoons are the dependable ones.
May to August is the kite window, while the breeze that made this a windsurf center runs May to October, six months of dry hot wind over warm sea; reliability after September is doubtful. Water is 24-26 C in summer and 17-18 C in winter, so no wetsuit from spring to autumn.
Mandalin Kite School works the Fenerburnu area and takes beginners, but on the small west beach a first-timer alone is out of place. Rescue is informal: the windsurf school watches until about 18:00 and will send a boat for around EUR 20, unconfirmed for 2026, if you told them you were going out.

Character

thermal

fills in: August afternoons are the windier ones. Around Bodrum Akyarlar both a morning and an afternoon window can work.

Typical strength

No long-run measurement exists for the headland itself, and the nearest station with statistics is an airport 15 km away that averages 5 knots, which says nothing about this point. Working summer afternoons commonly run somewhere in the mid-teens to low twenties, gusty where the wind bends round the headland. Indicative, not measured.

One of the windier spots on the Bodrum peninsula, though reliability drops off after September.
May-August is the best of it, with the headland accelerating the thermal and no wetsuit needed spring to autumn. The local breeze from May to October is what made Fener a windsurf center: six months of dry hot wind over warm sea.

The quiver, in words

For a 75-85 kg rider a 9 m and a 12 m cover most of the Meltemi season, with a 7 m for the strong August afternoons. Sizes are worked from the wind range rather than from any local record, and the gustiness argues for going a size down rather than a size up.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

sea, sheltered-looking open waterfront near Akyarlar with sandy beaches and headland exposure

Standing depth

Shallow sand for roughly the first 70 m off the small kite beach, then it drops away; over the riding area the water is more than 2 m deep and the bottom there is sand mixed with stones. The extent of the shallow strip is unconfirmed against any survey.

Tides

Effectively tideless. The Aegean here moves centimetres, not metres, so the launch and the shallow strip work the same at any hour and there is nothing to time a session around.

Temperature

24-26°C summer · 17-18°C winter

Wetsuit

Spring to autumn often no wetsuit needed; winter requires a normal wetsuit.

17–26°C water
Fener Beach is open waterfront that looks sheltered because Kos sits offshore. The small sandy kite beach is west of the windsurf and sunbather beach.

Your level

Mandalin Kite School teaches complete beginners in the Fenerburnu area, but the small kite beach itself is not the place to learn: it is narrow and shared. Go with a school rather than alone.

Rescue

Informal. The windsurf school keeps a lookout until about 18:00 and will send a boat for around EUR 20, unconfirmed for 2026, if you warned them you were going out. It does not watch the kite beach and can only pick up someone it happens to see drifting past.
There is a first-aid point among the facilities on the main beach. Tell someone before you launch.

Launch

The main Fener beach is kept for windsurfers and sunbathers. Kites use a small narrow sandy beach just west, around the headland.

Hazards riders report 11

  • More open-sea exposure on the outer parts of the bay
  • Thin spot data - confirm current conditions locally
  • Small narrow kite launch west of the main beach
  • Main beach is reserved for windsurfers and sunbathers
  • Occasional swimmers and sunbathers even on the kite beach
  • Not ideal for beginners.
  • Reliability may reduce after September.
  • Open waterfront exposure despite some shelter from Kos
  • Sand mixed with stones on the bottom over the riding area
  • Gusty wind where it accelerates around the headland
  • Boat traffic offshore
Rules & access
2026: the main beach is for windsurfers and sunbathers, and kites use the beach west of it. When the local rule was set is not stated.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Launch from the small beach west of the headland, not from the main windsurf and sunbather beach.
  • Tell the windsurf school before you ride on your own; they keep a lookout until about 18:00.
  • Come between May and August. September and October are a gamble here.
  • Give the swimmers room; the kite strip is narrow and people still use it.
  • There is no tide to plan around, so pick your hour on the wind alone.
  • Rig for gusts, not for the average: the headland accelerates the wind and a size down rides better than a size up.
