This record is the Kohilari/Kochylari kite beach north of Kefalos, not the sheltered Kamari Bay resort beach below Kefalos village. The two names get swapped around and the confusion is real, so confirm which beach anyone means before driving out. The launch is long, sandy and worked by a local kite school.
Summer wind is thermal Meltemi, normally out of the northwest, side to side-onshore, 15-25 knots on an ordinary day. The water gives you flat sections close in or between the wave lines, then chop and waves farther out once the Meltemi is established.
Ratings split: a beginner beach with a school, or a wave and freestyle beach for people who already ride. Both are true depending on the day, so if you are learning, stay inside the school's supervised shallow area and nowhere else. The beach is out of the way and roomier than the resort beaches elsewhere on Kos.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2020-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

flat, chop, small waves

Standing depth

Shallow for the first stretch off the sand, then depth comes on gradually - the near-shore shallows are where lessons run. No measured depth or distance was found.

Tides

Effectively tideless. The daily swing is on the order of 10 cm, so the launch, the shallow strip and the sandbank look the same all day; wind and air pressure shift the water level more than the tide does.

Temperature

24°C summer

Wetsuit

summer: no wetsuit or lycra; autumn: shorty; winter: wetsuit

Currents

A moderate current runs along the coast. Reported once and unconfirmed.

18–27°C water
Wide sandy Kohilari/Kochylari beach north of Kefalos, with both wave sections and flat water/freestyle sections. The bay/beach is exposed to wind and waves and is less suited to ordinary swimming than sheltered Limnionas.

Your level

beginnerintermediateadvanced
The beach is sold both ways: fine for beginners with a school, and mainly for experienced riders in waves and freestyle. The shallow near-shore water supports the first reading, the exposed outer water the second.

Rescue

+30 693 247 4093

No lifeguard post and no standing rescue boat on this beach. The cover in practice is the kite centre on the sand, which runs radio-equipped instruction and a shore team roughly June to August and answers on +30 693 247 4093. Greek rules require a licensed lifeguard and a motorised rescue craft on organised kite activity once the wind passes Beaufort 6, which the Meltemi does often here, so ask what is actually on site that day.

Launch

Long, soft sandy beach north of Kefalos with a mobile kite center; roughly 2 km of beach, with the wider beach area described as much larger and obstacle-free.

Space

Large beach with lots of space, though the cove itself is more restricted than Kefalos main bay.

Hazards riders report 8

  • wind can jump from moderate to 30+ knots
  • strong Meltemi can build to 25-30+ knots
  • rocks on the sides of the cove, reported and unconfirmed
  • moderate current along the coast, reported and unconfirmed
  • large waves and airflow make Kochylari less suitable for ordinary swimming
  • no lifeguard and no rescue boat: the kite centre is the only cover on the beach
  • riding space is more limited than at the main Kefalos bay, so watch the other kites
  • exposed beach with almost no shade and strong summer sun
Rules & access
No Kefalos or Kohilari municipal or port-authority kitesurf ordinance was found for 2026. The general Greek national kitesurf regulations apply: no kiting before sunrise or after sunset, minimum 200 m from swimmers and obstacles, minimum 200 m from shore except beyond marked swimmer buoys, a clear 100 m launch radius, and licensed lifeguard and powerboat assistance once the wind exceeds Beaufort 6. Beach zoning changes, so check locally.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Confirm the exact launch with the school before you drive out; Kefalos is used as a name for more than one beach on the peninsula.
  • Bring sun cover. The beach is exposed and has almost no natural shade.
  • Come with a car, or arrange the spot shuttle from Mastichari; there is no other practical way to move gear here.
