Good to know before you go4
- Kalafatis, a third spot some visitors expect to find kiteable, has gusty, offshore wind and is considered close to dangerous — Korfos and Ftelia are the two spots actually used.
- At Korfos, watch for fishermen and their net cables in the water around 8 pm.
- Korfos has submerged rocks — booties are recommended.
- Ftelia is a committed, choppier and wavier spot rated for advanced riders by some, intermediate-plus by others — it is not a beginner-friendly alternative to Korfos.
The spots
Korfos Bay
Korfos Bay is the kite base on Mykonos, right beside Ornos and a few minutes from Mykonos Town.

The model here carries the month's average wind rather than a count of windy days: it reaches 20.2 kt in July, the strongest month it models for this spot.
Korfos Bay: the long version, the launch and the rules
More on Korfos Bay
The bay faces north and squeezes the summer Meltemi, so most summer days run 15-30 knots, with the strongest window around 13:00-17:00 and gusty 35-knot days when the compression really works. Inside the bay the sand is shallow and the water flattens; farther out and to the west it turns choppy with small waves, while the eastern side stays flatter. Duotone Pro Center Mykonos is on the beach with IKO-qualified instructors, gear and boat-guided lessons, which is the sane way in if you cannot hold upwind yet. The limitation is space, not wind: the beach is narrow, the first meters of water are packed, and both ends of the spot finish in rocks with a road and cables downwind. Skip it if what you want is an empty bay for unsupervised first sessions. May to September is the season, and July and August are both the windiest and the busiest.
Getting on the water
Sandy beach launch in the Korfos Bay kite area used by Duotone Pro Center Mykonos/Kite Mykonos, about 400 m of sand. The beach is not very wide and the first meters from the water are very crowded; launch away from the rocky ends and use local assistance when busy. The centre sets buoys at the two ends of the beach as the line riders are asked not to cross, and swimmers are pointed outside them so the two groups stay apart.
If it goes wrong
No public rescue service covers the bay. The cover that exists on the water belongs to the kite centre and follows its lessons, rentals and boat sessions; nothing confirms it extends to independent riders. The Mykonos port authority is on 2289022218 (mykonos@hcg.gr), 108 reaches the coastguard and 112 the general emergency service.
Rules and access
2026: the national kitesurf regulations prohibit riding before sunrise and after sunset, within 200 m of swimmers, within 200 m of anchored boats, markers, rocks, reefs and other obstacles, and closer than 200 m to shore except beyond the swimmer buoys; the launch area must be unobstructed and at sufficient distance from airports and from the imaginary approach and takeoff lines. Mandatory equipment includes helmet, life jacket, line knife and quick release, plus an isothermal suit from 15 October to 15 May. Locally the kite centre marks the bay with buoys at both ends as the limit riders should not cross, and swimmers are directed outside that line. The bay can also be closed outright for events: port authority decision 2131.19/608/2026 of 10 June 2026 banned all vessel traffic, anchoring, marine recreation craft and any other activity inside a box off Korfos beach from 15 to 21 June 2026, 09:00 to 19:00, for the Open Panhellenic Interclub Kiteboarding race. No standing municipal ordinance specific to Korfos is published.
Ftelia Bay
Ftelia is on the exposed north coast of Mykonos and takes the N/NNE Meltemi straight onshore across the full Aegean fetch.

Ftelia Bay: the long version, the launch and the rules
More on Ftelia Bay
Korfos is the sheltered side of this island; Ftelia is the opposite, chop and shorebreak and waves instead of flat water. In strong Meltemi the waves run roughly 0.5-2 m, the hills upwind throw gusts, rocks sit in the middle and at the ends of the bay, and there is current. That is a lot to handle with the wind pushing you back onto the sand, which is why the honest rating is committed intermediate and above. Tourism copy sells it as a starter beach. Ignore that. The launch is open sand with reasonable room, best by the taverna on the left, and where the rocks are that day is worth asking about before you rig.
Getting on the water
Launch off the open sand, parking on the road or at the beach bar. The best position is by the taverna on the left-hand side; there is room, but rocks sit in the center of the bay and in other corners of it.
If it goes wrong
No kite rescue on this beach and no kite centre on it either; the nearest centre, with staff on the water, is at Korfos on the sheltered south side. Whether any lifeguard is posted at Ftelia in the summer months is unconfirmed - nothing on the beach is documented. In the water the numbers are 108 for the coastguard and 112 for everything, and an onshore Meltemi means a failed session ends on the sand rather than downwind, which is the one thing working in your favour here.
Rules and access
2026: Greek kitesurf regulations prohibit kitesurfing before sunrise and after sunset, within 200 m of swimmers, within 200 m of anchored boats, markers, rocks, reefs or other obstacles, and closer than 200 m to the shoreline except beyond the swimmer buoys, and they require an unobstructed launch area. The same regulations require a helmet, life jacket, line knife, quick release and an isothermal suit from 15 October to 15 May. Nothing spot-specific is posted at Ftelia; ask locally before riding.

What riders say
7 recurring claims
The island is expensive in a way that has nothing to do with kiting - food, sunbeds and rooms are where the money goes, and people say so repeatedly.
consensus×5 riders
For practical purposes there is one kite beach on the island, Korfos, and riders say so bluntly - Ftelia exists but has no centre on the sand.
consensus×4 riders
The wind itself is not what people complain about. Nobody reports getting skunked here; the complaints are about room, prices and the launching scrum.
consensus×4 riders
Ftelia is the escape from the crowd and a different proposition entirely - onshore Meltemi with the whole Aegean fetch behind it, rocks in the middle of the bay, waves and a shore break.
majority×3 riders
The same Meltemi that makes the kiting ruins the non-kiting half of the trip. Visitors say it blows all day and makes the beach and pool too cold to sit at.
majority×2 riders
Korfos is small. It is roughly four hundred metres of sand in a U-shaped bay with rock at both ends, and riders describe a thin usable strip with people launching in front of the car park.
contested×3 riders
Whether it works for a first lesson is genuinely split - the bay is buoyed and shallow inside, and it is also the busiest launch on the island with people who have never had a lesson.

FAQ
Is Mykonos suitable for beginners?
Korfos Bay is - the concave bay funnels strong, consistent Meltemi and has sandy, shallow inside water, making it a base for lessons, freeride and progression.
What is Ftelia Bay like?
Unlike Korfos, Ftelia takes the Meltemi directly onshore across open Aegean fetch, so conditions are more about chop, shorebreak and waves than sheltered flat water.
What is the wind like?
Summer Meltemi blows from the north/northeast, funneled into Korfos Bay for steadier riding or hitting Ftelia Bay directly onshore.

- Is 'Mykonos' the name riders actually use for this area?
