Nea Kios sits on Dalamanara Beach in the Argolic Gulf, on the coastal road between Nafplio and Nea Kios, and it is a school spot before it is anything else. The water is shallow over a sandy bottom with shells, flat to choppy, and close to shore it gets too shallow to ride properly.
The wind is not the Meltemi that hits Mykonos: it is a summer thermal from S to SE, onshore, filling in after 14:00, around Beaufort 5 in May-August but sometimes only 3-4 Bft and not enough. Radical Kite Center runs the beach and teaches beginner to advanced, and there is room to launch and land on the big sandy strip.
This is where you learn to waterstart and hold a line in 26-27 C water, not where you go for waves or wind strength. The season opens 1 April and riding continues to the end of September, with May-August the best-supported window.
What nobody has published is whether independent riders get any rescue cover, and whether swimmer buoys or port-police zoning change the beach in July and August.

Typical strength

Stable thermal summer wind, though not always strong enough.
The operating season opens 1 April, and elsewhere runs April to October. Best months are May-August, with riding to the end of September; winter works but it is cold.

The quiver, in words

Indicative, no local size table is published: the May-August thermal at about Beaufort 5, roughly 17-21 kt, puts a 75-85 kg rider on 9-10 m. Keep a 12 m for the 3-4 Bft afternoons that only just carry, and an 8 m for the top of the range.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

A sheltered bay, shallow over a sandy bottom, flat to choppy depending on the day. The beach is big and sandy with shells, and right by the shore it can be too shallow to ride.

Your level

beginnerintermediateadvanced
Shallow water, a sandy bottom, room to move and a school on the sand make this a good place to be a beginner. Advanced riders can train here, but the spot is about lessons, freeride and progression, not waves or strong wind.

Hazards riders report 6

  • Buoys are listed as a hazard for the broader Nafplio spot.
  • Very shallow water near shore can be a hazard.
  • Shells on the beach/bottom.
  • Buoys, carried over from the wider Nafplio entry rather than observed at Dalamanara.
  • Thermal wind may be too light on some days.
  • Greek national rules require distance from swimmers, obstacles and shore and an unobstructed launch area.
Rules & access
2026: Greek kitesurf regulations prohibit kitesurfing before sunrise and after sunset, within 200 m of swimmers, within 200 m of anchored boats, markers, rocks, reefs and other obstacles, and less than 200 m from the shoreline except beyond the swimmer buoys, and they require an unobstructed launch area. Helmet, life jacket, line knife and quick release are mandatory, plus an isothermal suit from 15 October to 15 May. No Nea Kios or Dalamanara municipal rule is published.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Ride the afternoon: the thermal is reported after 14:00 and lessons run between 12:00 and 18:00.
  • Check your depth before you jump anywhere near shore. It is very shallow and there are shells on the bottom.
  • Take the first sessions with Radical Kite Center and ask them where the launch area runs that week.
  • Sleep in Nafplio for the old town, Palamidi and the restaurants on light days; Nea Kios is the village closest to the water.
  • Do not count on a boat pickup unless you are a school client; nothing public is on record.
