Astros, which riders usually call Paralio Astros or just Portes, is a Peloponnese spot on the Argolic Gulf: tide independent, chop with small to medium waves. The summer engine is a thermal that fills in around 3 pm and runs about 13-15 knots, enough for a long freeride session; winter brings frontal days from the north and the southeast instead.
The beach is long, and away from Paralio Astros there are wide empty sections, but July and August load the stretch near town with swimmers and holiday traffic. Portes, south of the village, is coarse sand and pebbles, with deep, cool, clear water.
SE is the main direction with N a good second, and the spot also turns up under Arcadia with an N-NE reading, so ask somebody before you rig. West wind is the one to respect: extremely strong and offshore, advanced riders only.
On an ordinary day there are very few locals out, maybe around 20 kites at the height of summer. March through October is the season.

fills in: The thermal is consistent from around 3 pm. Warm midday wind is also reported for Agios Andreas, Portes and Paliochano.

Typical strength

About 13-15 knots on the summer afternoon thermal, from one session only; no citable average exists for winter frontal days.

The thermals are very consistent for half the year, with winter frontal days also noted; thermal and frontal wind both occur.
March-October is listed as best months, with thermal plus frontal wind. Winter can have northern and southeastern frontal days, but west wind is extremely strong offshore and suitable only for advanced riders.

Thermal or synoptic

thermal and frontal

The quiver, in words

Indicative, derived from the 13-15 knot afternoon thermal rather than from local rider accounts: a 75-85 kg rider wants 12-14 m on a normal summer thermal day, with a big light-wind kite or a foil paying off on the softer ones. Winter frontal days from the N or SE come in harder and pull that down toward 9-10 m. No measured local sizes.

Direction to shore

The coast here faces east into the Argolic Gulf. The SE main direction arrives side-onshore, N runs cross-shore down the long beach, and W is straight offshore, which is why west days are advanced-only. Read off the coastline rather than from a posted local rating, so check it against whoever is out before you commit to a section.

Dominant direction

SE is the main direction; N also blows and counts as a good secondary, which reconciles the N-NE reading recorded under Arcadia.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Standing depth

At Portes the bottom drops away quickly off coarse sand and pebbles, so there is little wading room and a body-drag back in is a long one. The sandy stretch north toward Paralio Astros has no depth information at all. Tide plays no part in it either way.

Tides

Tide independent.

Temperature

Summer Paralio Astros averages 23.4 C in June, 26.3 C in July and 26.8 C in August.

Winter Paralio Astros winter monthly averages are about 15.4-18.3 C, with a winter seasonal average of 16.7 C.

Wetsuit

Shorts in summer and thick wetsuit in winter; water temperatures run warm in high summer and cold in winter.

16–29°C water
Chop plus small to medium waves. Portes is coarse sand/pebbles with deep, cool, clear water and an old inactive Lake Mustou estuary.

Rescue

Rescue and lifeguard cover appear among the beach facilities, but nothing confirms they are staffed outside the July-August swimming season or that they extend to a kiter offshore. Treat it as a swimming-beach service, not as kite cover. The coast guard emergency number in Greece is 108, and 112 works for everything.

  • Deep water off Portes means a long body-drag if you lose the board
Rules & access
Checked in 2026: riding zones are listed at Astros, with guidance not to ride too close to tourist areas in summer. Greek national kitesurf rules also prohibit kitesurfing before sunrise/after sunset, in adverse weather, beyond 1 nautical mile from shore, within 200 m of swimmers, anchored boats, reefs/islets/buoys/other obstacles, and within 200 m of shore except where allowed beyond swim-zone buoys; launching requires a clear 100 m radius. No current North Kynouria municipal kite-zone map was found.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Ride the empty sections away from the town swimming zones in July and August, and respect any posted riding zone.
  • Skip the west-wind days unless you are advanced and have someone on shore; it is extremely strong and straight offshore.
  • Check Portes when you want cleaner exposure, but expect deep water and coarse sand and pebbles underfoot.
  • Ask what the day actually is before you pump: the 3 pm SE thermal, an N or NE setup, or a winter front.
  • Confirm that lifeguard cover is active for your section of beach and for the season, rather than assuming it covers kiters.
  • Bring a big kite for summer. A 13-15 knot thermal on a 75-85 kg rider is 12-14 m territory, and the winter fronts are the days you need the small one.
  • The coast faces east, so SE is side-onshore and N runs along the beach; the coast guard number is 108.
