Simos Beach & Pounta Pavlopetri

beginner-friendlybudget

2 spots

Elafonisos is a small, low-key Peloponnese island reached by a short car-ferry from Pounta, and Simos is its postcard beach — but that beach only really works for kiting in winter and shoulder-season SW/W fronts, so summer riders cross back to the mainland side at Pounta/Pavlopetri instead.
This suits people who want a quiet island escape with kiting as one of several things to do, not a wind-guaranteed kite-camp scene, and it does not suit anyone chasing nightlife or an established kite-school infrastructure.

The spot cards

Good to know before you go2

  • Simos works for SW/WSW/W frontal wind, concentrated in winter and shoulder months — in summer's north wind, the spot to use is Pounta/Pavlopetri on the mainland side, not Simos
  • The ferry has no reservation system; cars board in arrival order, so plan around possible queues in peak season

Simos Beach: the long version, the launch and the rules

    More on Simos Beach

It works on SW, WSW and W wind, which puts the good months in winter and the shoulder seasons rather than in summer; the summer northerly belongs at Pounta or Pavlopetri, not here. Kiting at Simos is not allowed in July and August, and in those two months the beach is full of campers and families anyway. Sarakiniko and Simos get used as the same name in places: one big sandy beach with chop and small waves, and flatter water in the bays next door. The sea sits around 25 C in summer and 17 C in winter, so a shorty covers most of the season you would actually ride. School coverage is the weak point, and whether anyone is permanently teaching here now is unconfirmed. Come in October or March, and ask locally before you rig.

    Getting on the water

Large sandy beach launch at Simos/Sarakiniko when wind direction and beach use allow.

    If it goes wrong

Nothing organised. No kite centre is permanently based on the island and no specialised rescue service operates here, so the cover is the personal safety gear the national rules already make mandatory, whoever else happens to be on the water, and a coastguard response from the mainland.

    Rules and access

As of 2025, no kiting is allowed at Simos in July and August. The 2026 Greek national kitesurf regulation also prohibits kitesurfing before sunrise or after sunset, within 200 m of bathers, within 200 m of anchored boats/rocks/reefs/other obstacles, beyond 1 nautical mile from shore, or within 1 nautical mile of ports/marinas/fish farms; launch areas need a clear 100 m radius, and mandatory safety gear (helmet, harness, line-cutting knife, quick-release leash, personal flotation device) is required, with wetsuits mandatory from 15 October to 15 May. No separate 2026 Simos/Sarakiniko municipal or port-police zoning beyond the July-August ban is published.

  2. Pounta Pavlopetri

    sea strait · beginner ok

Pounta is the mainland side of the Elafonisos Strait, down in the southeast Peloponnese, and the narrow water between Pounta and Elafonisos is where local windsurfers and kitesurfers meet when the north wind runs.

Pounta Pavlopetri: the long version, the launch and the rules

    More on Pounta Pavlopetri

Big sandy beach, shallow flat clear water, April-September the useful window. The catch is the angle. North here is offshore to side-offshore, so a dead kite or a broken line takes you away from the beach, and no rescue setup has been confirmed. South of Pavlopetri the Monemvasia rules forbid windsurfing and kitesurfing and call the water dangerous, and the submerged prehistoric city of Pavlopetri lies between the islet and the mainland beach, so the zoning here is not decorative. Freeride and flat water in a north wind is what riders come for. Bring your own gear and somebody who knows the strait.

    Getting on the water

Big sandy mainland beach at Pounta/Viglafia opposite Elafonisos, close to the Pavlopetri islet and ferry area.

    If it goes wrong

No rescue cover and no lifeguard, and no rental or instruction anywhere along this stretch of coast, so nobody is coming out for you. That matters more here than at most beaches, because the wind riders come for blows off the land, which is exactly the case in which the national rules require a motorized rescue boat with a qualified supervisor. Nearest port authority is Neapoli Vion on +30 27340 22228; otherwise 112.

    Rules and access

2017: south of Pavlopetri, windsurfing and kitesurfing are dangerous and forbidden. That municipal line is still the only local rule published for this coast, and no permit or corridor scheme exists on the Pounta side. Greece's national rules apply on top, from the Ministerial Decision in Government Gazette 4415/B of 7 October 2020: 200 m from swimmers, 100 m from marker buoys, a clear 100 m around the launch, nothing before sunrise or after sunset, nothing beyond 1 nautical mile from shore, nothing above 6 Beaufort or in poor visibility, a wetsuit from 15 October to 15 May, and a motorized rescue boat with a qualified supervisor whenever the wind is offshore. Here the offshore wind is the wind that makes the spot.

Seasons beyond windElafonisos's year-round population is only around 300-350 people, but July-August brings over 3,000 visitors a day — expect the island to feel completely different in high summer versus the quieter winter months that suit Simos's own wind window.

What riders say

5 recurring claims

  1. July and August are not kiting months on Simos/Sarakiniko. The beach fills with swimmers, and the water only comes back to the kites around September.

    consensus×4 riders

  2. The wind that actually works on the island side is the winter and shoulder-season SW/W front, and when it lands Sarakiniko stops being a swimming beach and turns into a wave beach — 20 to 35 knots and sets reported over two metres.

    majority×2 riders

  3. The summer wind here is north, and on the mainland strip at Pounta/Pavlopetri that comes side-offshore to offshore, up to about 35 knots — which is why the summer sessions happen there rather than on the postcard beach.

    majority×2 riders

  4. What people are warm about is the island itself — the water, the food, the quiet town. The kiting comes second in almost every account.

    majority×2 riders

  5. As a trip booked for kiting it disappoints, and people say so bluntly: too far, too little wind, maybe one rideable day in ten. A resident pushes back and says June is empty and perfectly kiteable.

History & trivia

Scene & life

  • In antiquity Elafonisos was not an island but a peninsula called 'Onou Gnathos' (donkey's jawbone), later separated from the mainland
  • Pavlopetri was first noted submerged in 1904, rediscovered by archaeologists in 1967, and fully 3D-mapped by a Cambridge team starting in 2009
  • Pavlopetri shows evidence of textile production and Minoan trade contact via Cretan pottery found at the site

Itinerary idea

Base on Elafonisos for beach days, take the car ferry back to Pounta/Pavlopetri when the wind is northerly in summer, and use SW-W winter fronts to kite directly off Simos.
