also known as Pounta Beach Laconia, Pavlopetri, Punta, Pounda Beach

Nearby Simos Beach 5 km · straight-line distance

Pounta is the mainland side of the Elafonisos Strait, down in the southeast Peloponnese, and the narrow water between Pounta and Elafonisos is where local windsurfers and kitesurfers meet when the north wind runs. Big sandy beach, shallow flat clear water, April-September the useful window. The catch is the angle.
North here is offshore to side-offshore, so a dead kite or a broken line takes you away from the beach, and no rescue setup has been confirmed.
South of Pavlopetri the Monemvasia rules forbid windsurfing and kitesurfing and call the water dangerous, and the submerged prehistoric city of Pavlopetri lies between the islet and the mainland beach, so the zoning here is not decorative. Freeride and flat water in a north wind is what riders come for. Bring your own gear and somebody who knows the strait.

Typical strength

The NE meltemi that works this strait runs anywhere from 3 Beaufort to over 9, so from about 8 knots to well past 40. Strong north-wind episodes at 35 knots are part of the normal April to September pattern.

flat-water north-wind alternative to Simos; can be offshore or side-offshore
April-September is the useful period. In summer a north wind pushes riders over from Simos to Pounta and Pavlopetri, and the beach itself goes calm and clear when it blows from the north.

The quiver, in words

Indicative for a 75-85 kg rider, derived from the local wind bands rather than measured on this beach: 12 m in a soft 12-16 kt north wind, 9 m at 18-24 kt, 7 m once the meltemi settles into the mid-20s, 5 to 6 m on the 35 kt days. With the wind blowing off the land, size down rather than up.

Direction to shore

N runs side-offshore to offshore at Pounta/Pavlopetri. The neighbouring Monemvasia/Pounda beach is described differently, with W side-off, SW side-shore and N onshore; do not carry one geometry over to the other.

Dominant direction

N, NNE, NE in the summer season; W and SW in winter systems

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

17–28°C water
Shallow, flat, clear water in the strait between Pounta and Elafonisos, which is the local windsurf and kite meeting point. Pounta beach borders the submerged prehistoric city of Pavlopetri at its southern end.

Your level

beginnerintermediateadvanced
Beginner through expert is the nominal range, but the north wind blows offshore or side-offshore and the archaeological zone limits where you can go, so beginners need local supervision.

Rescue

+30 27340 22228

No rescue cover and no lifeguard, and no rental or instruction anywhere along this stretch of coast, so nobody is coming out for you. That matters more here than at most beaches, because the wind riders come for blows off the land, which is exactly the case in which the national rules require a motorized rescue boat with a qualified supervisor.
Nearest port authority is Neapoli Vion on +30 27340 22228; otherwise 112.

  • Seasonal swimmers.
  • Offshore or side-offshore north wind can make self-rescue harder.
  • South of Pavlopetri is forbidden ground for windsurfing and kitesurfing, and reportedly dangerous water.
  • Currents are reported in the wider Monemvasia beach area.
  • Seasonal swimmers and ferry traffic near the Pounta-Elafonisos crossing.
  • Offshore or side-offshore north wind, with no rescue, lifeguard, rental or instruction anywhere on this stretch of coast

  • Seasonal swimmers on a busy tourism beach in July and August
Rules & access
2017: south of Pavlopetri, windsurfing and kitesurfing are dangerous and forbidden. That municipal line is still the only local rule published for this coast, and no permit or corridor scheme exists on the Pounta side. Greece's national rules apply on top, from the Ministerial Decision in Government Gazette 4415/B of 7 October 2020: 200 m from swimmers, 100 m from marker buoys, a clear 100 m around the launch, nothing before sunrise or after sunset, nothing beyond 1 nautical mile from shore, nothing above 6 Beaufort or in poor visibility, a wetsuit from 15 October to 15 May, and a motorized rescue boat with a qualified supervisor whenever the wind is offshore. Here the offshore wind is the wind that makes the spot.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Find out where the protected Pavlopetri zone starts before you pump; everything south of it is off limits.
  • Treat the summer north wind as offshore until a local rider or school tells you otherwise.
  • Stay well clear of the Pounta-Elafonisos ferry line.
  • Bring your own kit: no rental or lessons have been confirmed at the beach.

Getting there

Airport

Athens International Airport (ATH) is the main practical international airport; Kalamata (KLX) is geographically closer but with fewer routes.

Route

Reach Pounta/Viglafia by road on the southeast Peloponnese. The ferry to Elafonisos leaves from Pounta and takes about 9-10 minutes, so the launch is at the mainland side of the crossing.

Staying

Stay options are on Elafonisos, around Neapoli/Viglafia, or more broadly in the Monemvasia area.

No-wind days

Snorkel the Pavlopetri submerged city, visit Elafonisos beaches, cross to Simos, explore Lake Strongyli, or tour Monemvasia and the Laconia coast.
