  1. A whole Meltemi season can fail here and the failure is not small. One stay of about twenty days in July and August counted three days with 20 knots or more. Another, mid-July to mid-August, had more than half the days rideable only on a foil. A third multi-island account puts Paros in a summer that disappointed across the Aegean.

  2. The Pounta/Pounda channel between Paros and Antiparos is one of Greece's best and most popular kite beaches - flat water, constant wind, very safe - but gets very busy in high season

The riding area is a strait a couple of hundred metres wide and everything is packed into it at once - school lessons, windsurfers, boats anchored a few metres off the sand, jet skis, and whoever is showing off in front of the centre. The workaround people arrive at independently is to rig fifty to a hundred metres upwind of the school area and then stay upwind on the water.

  4. The quiver that actually gets used here is wide - 7 to 12 metres across a single stay, with 9 and 11 the workhorses on the good days. A light-wind kite and a foil board are the two pieces of luggage people say paid for themselves.

Athens, then a bus to the port, then a wait, then four or five hours of ferry lands you late at night. Flying to Mykonos and taking the short ferry costs more but saves the day; flying via Athens can also mean paying sports luggage twice.

  3. The other two island spots are not spare Pountas. Lagkeri, at the end of a bumpy road, is the wave option and the one to take if you want swell in summer, but the bay is small enough to feel crowded at five kites and often has less wind than Pounta. Tsoukalia is choppier and gustier still.
