External renown — how known this place is in the kite world. Not a quality rating.

Two Ionian-coast Calabria spots on the quiet stretch north of Crotone, anchored by one long-running local sailing/kite club at Gabella; this is a low-key, largely Italian scene built around a small school rather than a resort strip.
It suits riders happy to base near a small ancient town and drive between beaches; it does not suit anyone wanting nightlife or English-language tourism infrastructure.

Gabella: the long version, the launch and the rules

    More on Gabella

The wind comes N to NE, Tramontana and Grecale, thermal on some days and frontal on others, and it often picks up from midday. March to October is the season. Club Velico Crotone teaches at Lido Sport Beach in localita Gabella and will run a lesson from 11 knots; 360 Kite School works the Lido Maracaibo and Lido le Palme ends, where the riding is freeride and freestyle in 16 to 30 knots. Those two figures describe different things, a teachable breeze and a proper session, and no single normal range for the beach has been published. There are special kite zones along Gabella Grande, but the text defining them and the year it dates from were not found, so ask at a lido before you rig. Standing depth close to shore and any rescue arrangement are unconfirmed.

    Getting on the water

Wide, long sandy beach north of Crotone. The launch and landing area is medium sized, and there are special kite zones along this stretch. Club Velico Crotone teaches at Lido Sport Beach in localita Gabella.

    If it goes wrong

No public rescue boat covers Gabella. 360 Kite School works the Lido Maracaibo and Lido le Palme ends with a RIB and its own marked launch corridor on site, so water cover there runs while the school is open and is aimed at its own students. Through the bathing season each lido has to staff one lifeguard and one rescue post every 80 m of sea frontage, with a rowing rescue boat, a belt on 200 m of floating line, two ringbuoys on 25 m lines, binoculars and fins. Outside the season a beach can be open with no cover at all, and has to say so on a sign. At sea, call 1530 or 112, or the Crotone Coast Guard direct on 0962 611601 for the switchboard and 0962 611603 for the operations room; the office answers around the clock and keeps a listening watch on VHF channel 16.

    Rules and access

2026: the Crotone bathing-safety ordinance, n. 58 of 14 May 2026, covers the coast from Sellia Marina to Punta Fiume Nica, Gabella included. Between 08:00 and 20:00 the strip reserved for bathers - 150 m out from the shoreline at beaches - is closed to surf, windsurf and kitesurf, and every craft including sailboards must in any case stay 200 m off a beach under the standing recreational-activities ordinance n. 51 of 13 June 2018. Landing corridors are at least 10 m wide, run perpendicular to the shore, are marked with yellow buoys and carry a beach sign; lidos install them, and municipalities may add them on free beaches under the local beach plan. The 2018 ordinance is what actually sets the kite rules and it is still in force. Minimum age 16. A flotation aid worn at all times, and a helmet during courses. A quick-release you can fire under load, plus a cutter for the lines. Lines hooked up only at launch and unhooked at landing. Daylight only, in settled weather. Riding is banned inside 200 m of vessels and of the floats that mark divers, inside 100 m of fishing and aquaculture gear, beyond one nautical mile out, at river mouths, canals and outfalls, and in any water closed to bathing. A board leash is prohibited. No jumping within 40 m of other water users or of obstacles. Launch and land only through the marked corridor, one rider at a time, body-dragging out to at least 100 m from the beach. Never leave a kite unattended without the lines fully wound on the bar. Going out in offshore wind is prohibited outright. No ordinance names a kite zone at Gabella by name: the zones on this stretch are the corridors and kite areas the individual lidos install and maintain.

  2. Strongoli Marina

    sea · beginner ok

Strongoli Marina is a thin entry, honestly: a real spot on the Ionian coast north of Crotone, ridden by locals, with very little published about it.

    intermediateadvanced

    In seasonMar to Nov

The model here carries the month's average wind rather than a count of windy days: it reaches 13.8 kt in January, the strongest month it models for this spot.

Strongoli Marina: the long version, the launch and the rules

    More on Strongoli Marina

The beach is long and wide, the sand fine, the bottom sandy, which takes the worst out of a bad landing. Wind is N and NE, Tramontana and Grecale, quoted between 12 and 35 knots, and it can strengthen through the afternoon on hot days. March to November is the useful stretch, and Calabria's mild winters let you ride through much of the rest. Water is about 25 C in summer and 15 C in winter. There is no kite corridor on record, no rescue setup on the sand and no school based on this beach, so arrive self-sufficient or arrive with someone who knows the coast. The forecast record for Strongoli Marina shows plenty of light days, which is the reason to check before driving out rather than after.

    Getting on the water

Launch off the sandy beach at Strongoli Marina: fine sand with a sandy bottom underfoot, so less to hurt yourself on.

    If it goes wrong

Nothing on the sand. No kite school is based on this beach, there is no rescue boat and no year-round lifeguard; summer cover, where it exists at all, sits on the managed sections rather than on the open stretches where kiters rig. Sea emergencies go to the Guardia Costiera on 1530, general emergencies on 112. Ride with someone or ride within your own recovery range.

    Room to rig

Long, wide beach. The kite rigging corridor, if one is marked, is unconfirmed.

    Rules and access

2026: no Strongoli-specific kite ordinance exists. General Italian and local bathing-season rules apply, which means respecting Guardia Costiera and municipal ordinances and, in season, taking nearshore access through authorized corridors.

History & trivia

Scene & life

  • Crotone was an ancient Greek Achaean colony (8th century BC) and the site of Pythagoras's school around 530 BC.
  • Strongoli was founded as the Greek city of Petelia around 710 BC and, per local lore, was the only nearby city to survive Crotone's ancient decline.
  • Crotone suffered a serious industrial decline from the 1980s and a devastating flood in 1996.
