Strongoli Marina is a thin entry, honestly: a real spot on the Ionian coast north of Crotone, ridden by locals, with very little published about it. The beach is long and wide, the sand fine, the bottom sandy, which takes the worst out of a bad landing.
Wind is N and NE, Tramontana and Grecale, quoted between 12 and 35 knots, and it can strengthen through the afternoon on hot days. March to November is the useful stretch, and Calabria's mild winters let you ride through much of the rest. Water is about 25 C in summer and 15 C in winter.
There is no kite corridor on record, no rescue setup on the sand and no school based on this beach, so arrive self-sufficient or arrive with someone who knows the coast. The forecast record for Strongoli Marina shows plenty of light days, which is the reason to check before driving out rather than after.

March to November is the ideal period, and Calabria's mild climate keeps kitesurfing possible for most of the rest of the year.

The quiver, in words

For a 75-85 kg rider across the quoted 12-35 knot range: 12 m on the light N days at the bottom of the band, 9-10 m through the high teens and low 20s, 7 m and smaller when the Grecale is at the top of its range. Indicative, derived from the wind band rather than from local sessions.

Direction to shore

The coast here runs NNW-SSE and the beach faces ENE, so the numbers matter more than the compass names. NE lands almost straight onshore, which pushes a failed relaunch back onto the sand rather than out to sea. N comes in side-onshore off the left shoulder.A NNW day is the true side-shore one and the cleanest angle to ride. Derived from the coastline orientation, not from a local report.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Tides

Tide is not part of the plan. The Ionian range on this coast is a few tens of centimetres, so the launch and the shoreline sit essentially the same at any hour and there is no tide window to wait for.Indicative: the nearest gauge in the national network is at Crotone, and no local measurement for this beach has been published.

Temperature

25°C summer · 15°C winter

Wetsuit

Boardshorts or a shorty in summer. A full suit in winter for anything longer than a quick session.

15–28°C water
Open Ionian coastline, clear water, fine sand and a sandy bottom. Flatter than Contrada Gabella down the coast.

Rescue

Nothing on the sand. No kite school is based on this beach, there is no rescue boat and no year-round lifeguard; summer cover, where it exists at all, sits on the managed sections rather than on the open stretches where kiters rig.
Sea emergencies go to the Guardia Costiera on 1530, general emergencies on 112. Ride with someone or ride within your own recovery range.

Launch

Launch off the sandy beach at Strongoli Marina: fine sand with a sandy bottom underfoot, so less to hurt yourself on.

Space

Long, wide beach. The kite rigging corridor, if one is marked, is unconfirmed.

Hazards riders report 3

  • summer swimmers and Italian bathing-season restrictions may affect launch and nearshore riding
  • no formal kite corridor on record
  • light-wind days are common enough that you should check the forecast before travelling
Rules & access
2026: no Strongoli-specific kite ordinance exists. General Italian and local bathing-season rules apply, which means respecting Guardia Costiera and municipal ordinances and, in season, taking nearshore access through authorized corridors.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Treat this as a local session rather than a serviced destination, unless a school has confirmed it will be there.
  • Check the N/NE forecast the morning of: the records show a lot of light-wind days.
  • In the bathing season, ask locally about launch rules and any corridor before you rig.
  • Launch off the open sand well clear of swimmers; the beach is wide enough that there is no excuse not to.
  • NE is close to straight onshore on this beach, so a swim ends on the sand. NNW is the side-shore angle and the one to hope for.
  • There is no boat and no lifeguard here. Bring a phone in a pouch and know 1530 before you need it.
