Capo Spartivento is the exposed cape at the bottom of mainland Calabria, near Brancaleone. The beach curves round the point so several angles can be ridden, but the setup with real evidence behind it is Scirocco, out of the south-east, on spring and autumn lows.
Water is chop and small waves with no tide to plan around, and there is a left point that breaks on small and medium SE and S swell with no wind at all. The launch is medium, on grey coarse sand turning to micro-pebbles.
Currents run strong along the Ionian edge at the toe of Calabria and the wind is gusty, which is why this is not a place to learn, whatever an 'any level' rating suggests. Services are thin and the schools are back up the coast toward Reggio and Pellaro.
Come for a low in March or October, not for a week of dependable afternoons.

fills in: Scirocco here is synoptic, not a sea breeze. When the low is in place the wind runs through the day and overnight; when it is not, there is no afternoon fill-in to wait for. No local daily cycle has been documented.

Gusty. Exposed, and the better wave days depend on a low-pressure system arriving.
Spring and autumn lows with south-easterly wind are the wave setup.

Strength

No knot figure is published for this spot.

Direction to shore

Variable around the curved cape; many directions are reported to work because the beach curves around the cape.

Dominant direction

SE; multiple directions may work around the cape

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

sea

Standing depth

Unmeasured. The wide beach at Brancaleone town up the coast shelves gently; the cape itself is coarse sand turning to micro-pebbles, which normally means a steeper edge and deep water close in, and nothing has been published for it.

Tides

Kite conditions do not depend on tide.

Temperature

27°C summer · 16-18°C winter

Wetsuit

No wetsuit or light neoprene in summer; a full wetsuit is normally appropriate in winter water around 16-18 C.

Currents

Currents get pretty strong along the Ionian edge at the toe of Calabria.

Rescue

No lifeguard, no rescue boat, no school at the cape. The district ordinance puts the lifeguard duty on beach concessions during the bathing season, and this is free beach with none of those.
Coastguard emergencies go to 1530, everything else to 112. With current running hard along this edge of the Ionian, pick your downwind exit before you launch rather than after.

Rules & access
2025-2026: Brancaleone sits inside the Reggio Calabria maritime district, whose bathing-safety ordinance n. 34/2025 replaced the 2024 one. The bathing season runs from the third week of May to the third week of September, and a comune may shift the start by a week. Inside it, from 08:00 to 20:00, the first 150 m off a beach is reserved for swimmers, and all craft including sailboards must stay more than 200 m off the shoreline, crossing that band only through a marked landing corridor: 10 m wide, yellow buoys every 20 m, running 150 m out. Kitesurf and windsurf are handled separately by ordinance 37/2024 of 3 May 2024, which sets its own corridor type for kites. On free beaches the corridors are the comune's job to install, and none was found at the cape, so in season expect to be riding without a marked channel. Outside the bathing season none of the bathing-zone limits apply.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Watch the SE low-pressure charts; that is when the wave days and the left point line up.
  • Do not read an 'any level' rating as a beginner green light here: the current and the gusts are the reason it is not one.
  • Plan your own exit and self-rescue before you launch, because there is no rescue cover at the cape.
  • Bring hard-soled boots for the coarse sand and micro-pebbles.
  • From Reggio take the SS106 south past Galati; the airport is given at 50 km from the spot.
  • Plan your own exit and self-rescue before you launch, because there is no rescue cover at the cape. Coastguard is 1530.
  • Between late May and late September the first 150 m is the swimmers' water and craft are meant to stay 200 m out. Out of season the cape is yours.
