Steccato di Cutro is a long sandy Ionian beach, usually chop and small waves, with a big open launch around Lido Turrazzo and the Porto Kaleo area.
The wind split is what you come here to learn: SW Libeccio arrives side-on at 20-25 knots with some gusts and is the one to plan for, W turns side-shore and very gusty up to 30 knots, and S is onshore and generally lighter.
June to September is the core season, with March to October or November as the broader window and the wind filling in through the afternoon. Winter south swell reaches 2-3 m and the beach turns into a wave spot; anything over about 2.5 m of face is expert territory.
Schools run beginner courses here, but shore break in Libeccio and an onshore south wind with size are not beginner conditions, so read the day rather than the level list. Summer water is 27 C, winter around 17 C.
The corridor at Lido Turrazzo belongs to a school operation, and whether a visiting independent rider can use it in 2026 is unconfirmed.

fills in: A late-afternoon spot. The thermal builds through the afternoon and is most consistent from June to September; mornings are commonly light.

Typical strength

It starts working around 10-20 kt and holds well past 40 kt. Thermals run 15-20 kt, the classic SW session 20-25 kt, west up to 30 kt and gusty, 35-45 kt when a front comes through.

SW is the wind to want, 20-25 knots with some gusts. W can be very strong and gusty, up to 30 knots.
June to September is the best window; March to October, or March/April to October/November, is the broader operating season.

The quiver, in words

Indicative for a 75-85 kg rider, derived from the wind ranges rather than measured on the sand: 11-12 m in a light 12-15 kt thermal, 9 m for the classic 20 kt SW, 7-8 m at 25 kt, 6 m or under when the west pushes 30 kt.On the 35-45 kt frontal days the answer is not a smaller kite.

Direction to shore

SW side-on, W side-shore, S onshore. West, south-west and south are the three that work.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Rescue

VHF channel 16

The school operation at Lido Turrazzo runs its own safety boats alongside its launch corridor. Independent riders fall back on the public numbers: 1530 for sea emergencies (free), 112, or VHF channel 16. Beach establishments carry a lifeguard duty only inside the season they are open and staffed.

Long sandy beach with room to lay kites out and immediate access from the car park. Coming down the SS106 Catanzaro-Crotone, take the Steccato di Cutro turn-off and head toward the pine wood, about 500 m to the sand.Lido Turrazzo at Steccato is one of three local school spots and carries a launch corridor, a kite zone, a beach establishment, parking, changing rooms, a camper area and a bar.

Rules & access
2026: Steccato di Cutro sits in the Comune di Cutro, and no Cutro beach ordinance dealing with kitesurf was found. The water is under the Capitaneria di Porto di Crotone bathing-safety ordinance, which is where any launch-corridor authorisation comes from; the current text of that ordinance was not located. For scale, the neighbouring Comune di Crotone sets its 2026 seasonal bathing period at 15 May to 30 September, requires concessions to open no later than 1 June and close no earlier than 15 September, runs them 08:00 to 20:00 with a lifeguard on duty, and bans swimming, mooring and anchoring inside marked launch and landing corridors. The corridor and kite zone at Lido Turrazzo belong to the school operation there, and whether a visiting independent rider may use them is unconfirmed.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Plan around SW Libeccio: that is the classic side-on Steccato session, 20-25 knots with some gusts.
  • Treat a west forecast carefully, the wind goes very gusty and reaches 30 knots.
  • On south wind or winter swell, take local school guidance before going out; the onshore surf gets demanding.
  • Confirm the Lido Turrazzo corridor and the dinghy are running before you count on either.
  • Use Lido Turrazzo as the base: parking, changing rooms and a bar are all on the beach establishment.
  • Arrive for the afternoon. Mornings here are usually the wrong half of the day.
  • Coming down the SS106, the turn is signed Steccato di Cutro, then head for the pine wood.
  • There is no public rescue boat: 1530, 112 or VHF 16 is the whole plan outside a paid school session.
