When it fills in

Summer is a thermal day. The westerly crosses Calabria, gains speed offshore to the south and turns SW here as the afternoon heats up, so mornings are the quiet part and the wind builds later; it is not a dawn spot in July. Winter and any Libeccio or Scirocco perturbation is synoptic and answers to the chart, not the clock. No local fill-in or drop-off hours are published, and the indication above follows from the wind being thermal rather than from a measured record.

Botricello sits on the Ionian coast of Calabria and is normally reached through the Nirvana Club Village / Nirvana Kite Club launch. Tide makes no difference, the water is chop and small waves most days, and SW is the wind you want.
Summer is thermal: a westerly crosses Calabria, picks up speed and arrives here turned SW, usually stronger than the forecast said. Figures given run 10-25 knots in the recommended low-season summer period and up to 10-30 knots along the litorale. The catch is on the hills to the north.
When the wind-turbine field up there changes direction, the wind at the beach can go offshore inside about five minutes, and locals treat that as the cue to land. Winter, and any Libeccio or Scirocco perturbation, turns this into a wave and shore-break venue, so beginner suitability depends entirely on the day.
Space is not the problem in July and August; the swimmers and the marked zones are.

Typical strength

10-25 in low-season summer; other reports put the coast at 10-30 knots.

Thermal wind is often stronger than forecast, but it can switch offshore quickly when the wind-power turbines on the northern hills change direction.
March-October are the recommended months. It is also an excellent winter wave spot in SW Libeccio, while summer thermal westerlies suit freestyle and slalom better.

thermal and synoptic

The quiver, in words

No local figures are published. Indicative for a 75-85 kg rider, worked from the reported 10-25 kt range: 12 m at 12-15 kt, 9-10 m at 16-20 kt, 7-8 m from 22 kt upward. The summer thermal habitually arrives stronger than the forecast said, so err one size down rather than one up on a thermal afternoon.

Direction to shore

Summer SW/W/S thermal accelerates along the coast from farther south and turns cross-shore (SW) by the time it reaches Nirvana; it can swing offshore within about five minutes when the wind-turbine field on the northern hills changes direction, which locals treat as the cue to land.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Standing depth

Shallow off the sand with standing room close in, deepening once you are past the shore break. No measured distance out has been published, and tide makes no difference to it.

Tides

The spot is tide independent.

Temperature

27°C summer · 17°C winter

Wetsuit

Summer can be shorts or a shorty; spring is shorty, autumn normal wetsuit and winter thick/full wetsuit; summer water is reported about 27 C and winter water 16-18 C.

Open Ionian sandy-beach spot with chop and small waves in normal conditions. Medium-wave conditions also occur, with good winter waves and shore break in south-westerly Libeccio.

Rescue

Rescue is listed among the beach services, and the on-site nautical centre with its IKO instructors is the practical contact, but the village season only opens on 14 June and no rescue boat has been confirmed for independent riders at any time of year. At sea the free Coast Guard emergency number is 1530; 112 also reaches it.

Launch

Long sandy beach in front of the Nirvana Club Village: beach bar, parking, food, showers, toilets. The practical launch and landing patch is only medium, while the beach itself runs long and wide and empties out to the north in summer. The on-site nautical centre sits at Contrada Magliacane 40, in the Belcastro Marina hamlet, which is why the same launch is filed some places under Belcastro Marina and others under Botricello. The village's own summer season opens on 14 June, so outside that the beach services are not necessarily there.

Rules & access
2026: this is a bathing beach through the summer, riding zones and swimmer zones are reported at Botricello and at Nirvana, and kiters keep clear of the swimmer zone. No kite corridor or municipal access rule for Botricello was found. Note that the 2026 Soverato district bathing ordinance does not cover this beach: its jurisdiction runs from Simeri Crichi south to Monasterace, and Botricello lies north of that boundary, so the ordinance to read is the one issued for the district to the north.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Watch the wind turbines on the northern hills; when they swing, land.
  • Rig north along the beach in summer where it empties out, and stay off the swimmer zone and the buoys.
  • Treat Libeccio or Scirocco shore-break days as intermediate and up unless someone is watching you.
  • Ask Nalu or the Nirvana nautical centre about rescue cover and launch rules before you rig.
  • Pack a shorty for spring and a normal wetsuit for autumn: water is about 27 C in summer and 16-18 C in winter.
  • Come before 14 June and the beach club is not open yet: parking and sand, no bar, no rental, nobody watching the water.
  • Save 1530, the free Coast Guard number for emergencies at sea. There is no confirmed kite rescue boat here.
