Steccato di Cutro: the long version, the launch and the rules

    More on Steccato di Cutro

The wind split is what you come here to learn: SW Libeccio arrives side-on at 20-25 knots with some gusts and is the one to plan for, W turns side-shore and very gusty up to 30 knots, and S is onshore and generally lighter. June to September is the core season, with March to October or November as the broader window and the wind filling in through the afternoon. Winter south swell reaches 2-3 m and the beach turns into a wave spot; anything over about 2.5 m of face is expert territory. Schools run beginner courses here, but shore break in Libeccio and an onshore south wind with size are not beginner conditions, so read the day rather than the level list. Summer water is 27 C, winter around 17 C. The corridor at Lido Turrazzo belongs to a school operation, and whether a visiting independent rider can use it in 2026 is unconfirmed.

    Getting on the water

Long sandy beach with room to lay kites out and immediate access from the car park. Coming down the SS106 Catanzaro-Crotone, take the Steccato di Cutro turn-off and head toward the pine wood, about 500 m to the sand. Lido Turrazzo at Steccato is one of three local school spots and carries a launch corridor, a kite zone, a beach establishment, parking, changing rooms, a camper area and a bar.

    If it goes wrong

The school operation at Lido Turrazzo runs its own safety boats alongside its launch corridor. Independent riders fall back on the public numbers: 1530 for sea emergencies (free), 112, or VHF channel 16. Beach establishments carry a lifeguard duty only inside the season they are open and staffed.

    Rules and access

2026: Steccato di Cutro sits in the Comune di Cutro, and no Cutro beach ordinance dealing with kitesurf was found. The water is under the Capitaneria di Porto di Crotone bathing-safety ordinance, which is where any launch-corridor authorisation comes from; the current text of that ordinance was not located. For scale, the neighbouring Comune di Crotone sets its 2026 seasonal bathing period at 15 May to 30 September, requires concessions to open no later than 1 June and close no earlier than 15 September, runs them 08:00 to 20:00 with a lifeguard on duty, and bans swimming, mooring and anchoring inside marked launch and landing corridors. The corridor and kite zone at Lido Turrazzo belong to the school operation there, and whether a visiting independent rider may use them is unconfirmed.

Botricello: the long version, the launch and the rules

    More on Botricello

Tide makes no difference, the water is chop and small waves most days, and SW is the wind you want. Summer is thermal: a westerly crosses Calabria, picks up speed and arrives here turned SW, usually stronger than the forecast said. Figures given run 10-25 knots in the recommended low-season summer period and up to 10-30 knots along the litorale. The catch is on the hills to the north. When the wind-turbine field up there changes direction, the wind at the beach can go offshore inside about five minutes, and locals treat that as the cue to land. Winter, and any Libeccio or Scirocco perturbation, turns this into a wave and shore-break venue, so beginner suitability depends entirely on the day. Space is not the problem in July and August; the swimmers and the marked zones are.

    Getting on the water

Long sandy beach in front of the Nirvana Club Village: beach bar, parking, food, showers, toilets. The practical launch and landing patch is only medium, while the beach itself runs long and wide and empties out to the north in summer. The on-site nautical centre sits at Contrada Magliacane 40, in the Belcastro Marina hamlet, which is why the same launch is filed some places under Belcastro Marina and others under Botricello. The village's own summer season opens on 14 June, so outside that the beach services are not necessarily there.

    If it goes wrong

Rescue is listed among the beach services, and the on-site nautical centre with its IKO instructors is the practical contact, but the village season only opens on 14 June and no rescue boat has been confirmed for independent riders at any time of year. At sea the free Coast Guard emergency number is 1530; 112 also reaches it.

    Rules and access

2026: this is a bathing beach through the summer, riding zones and swimmer zones are reported at Botricello and at Nirvana, and kiters keep clear of the swimmer zone. No kite corridor or municipal access rule for Botricello was found. Note that the 2026 Soverato district bathing ordinance does not cover this beach: its jurisdiction runs from Simeri Crichi south to Monasterace, and Botricello lies north of that boundary, so the ordinance to read is the one issued for the district to the north.

  3. Cropani Marina

    mixed · beginner ok

Cropani Marina is a beach on the Ionian coast in Catanzaro province, and it is a stop on someone else's rotation rather than a kite base of its own.

    intermediateadvanced

In seasonApr to Jul, Sep to Oct

The model here carries the month's average wind rather than a count of windy days: it reaches 12.5 kt in January, the strongest month it models for this spot.

Cropani Marina: the long version, the launch and the rules

    More on Cropani Marina

The local school, Kitesurf Calabria, also branded Nirvana Kiteschool, works mainly out of Porto Kaleo at Steccato di Cutro and moves along the coast to Cropani, Marina di Davoli, Santa Caterina, Crotone, Strongoli and Botricello depending on the day's direction. The sand is clean and the water is clear here. The working directions are Ponente (W) and Libeccio (SW), and the months given are April, May, June, July, September and October, with the summer thermal picked out as good for a first lesson. Waves run from flat chop up to about 3 m in stronger conditions. What nobody has written down is how W and SW actually meet this beach, on-, cross- or offshore, which matters on a broadly east-facing coast and matters more if you are putting a beginner in the water. There is no published launch rule, no water temperature, no standing depth and no hazard list for Cropani Marina.

    Getting on the water

Sandy Ionian coastline with no marked kite corridor and no fixed launch: the nearest school treats Cropani as one beach on a rotation and picks whichever suits the day's wind. Rig back from the water, since the five metres nearest the waterline must stay clear for people walking, and stay out of any public launch corridor — standing in one or swimming across it is prohibited.

    If it goes wrong

The free beaches are unguarded and have to say so: the 2026 municipal order makes them post a board stating that bathing is unsafe for want of a rescue service. Cover exists in front of the concession sections only, and only from 15 June to 15 September. At sea the coastguard at Crotone keeps a 24-hour watch on VHF 16 and on 1530 or 112, switchboard 0962 611601, operations room 0962 611603.

    Rules and access

Two 2026 orders govern this beach. The Crotone coastguard bathing-safety order n. 58 of 14 May 2026 reserves the first 150 m off any beach for swimmers and closes it to navigation, and between 08:00 and 20:00 bans sail-driven craft inside it by name — surf, windsurf and kitesurf; beyond that, craft including sailboards keep 200 m off the sand and jet-skis 500 m. The town's own order n. 30 of 21 May 2026 keeps the five metres nearest the waterline clear for people walking, bans launching or hauling any boat off the free beaches other than craft carried by hand, bans standing in the public launch corridors or swimming across them, and requires municipal authorisation for any school or paid tuition on the sand. Beach concessions run 15 June to 15 September in 2026, open 08:00 to 20:00; bathing-water monitoring runs 1 May to 30 September 2026.

What riders say

6 recurring claims

  1. Teaching is the strongest thing on this beach. One instructor's name recurs across years of course write-ups, and beginners describe going from nothing to riding in strong wind among waves inside a single course.

    consensus×6 riders

  2. This is a wave beach, not a flat-water one. It works on west through south-west and south, and the shore break on a libeccio is the thing riders warn each other about.

    consensus×3 riders

  3. Summer swaps the wind problem for a people problem. The beach is almost entirely public and a village of about seven hundred takes in up to twenty thousand people in season, with a swimmer zone squeezing the launch.

    consensus×3 riders

  4. The wind here over-delivers: it commonly comes in stronger than the forecast said, and the beach holds riders well past forty knots.

    majority×2 riders

  5. Riders work the two beaches as a pair. North-easterlies get ridden up at Crotone; when it turns south-west they drive the twenty minutes down to Steccato.

    majority×2 riders

  6. Basing yourself in the resort at Botricello is a separate gamble from the kiting: guests split between calling it a lovely position on the sea and calling it badly run.
