The two headline beaches are not where anyone actually starts. Learners get pointed inland to the Broadwater side — Shearwater Park and Runaway Bay, Loders Creek, Pacific Park — and the ocean beaches are described as a bad place to take a first board.

The hard part on the ocean beaches is not the wind, it is the people. Flagged swimming zones sit close together, the 100 m exclusion each side eats most of the usable sand, and there is constant foot traffic through the launch area.
