Altona is the Melbourne west-side flat-water beach: a big sandbar holds the inside shallow and glassy, and outside it Port Phillip Bay turns into bump-and-jump chop.
St Kilda West Beach is the kite side of the pier, on the northern edge of Port Phillip Bay and close enough to the Melbourne CBD that the tram gets you there.

When does the wind work best?
St Kilda's best conditions come with the warm-season southerly pattern, while Altona works on a broader set of directions - E, SE, S and SW.
Is St Kilda crowded?
It is a shared public beach close to the CBD, so expect crowds, swimmers and other water users, with the kite zone kept separate from the swimming-only section south of the pier.
Where should I base myself?
St Kilda itself is the natural base, right on the kite beach with backpacker hostels to boutique hotels and a strong nightlife and dining scene.
