The feel of the place
Jeri is a former fishing village turned bucket-list dune town: sand-only streets, no cars, a nightly sunset-dune ritual, forró until late, and a kite scene that has actually been pushed out of the main bay to nearby Preá and Guriú because the village beach is now reserved for swimmers and windsurfers.

For whom it's brilliant
It is brilliant for riders who want a genuine, walkable, party-adjacent base with real infrastructure (ATMs now, fiber/Starlink wifi, good restaurants) but it is crowded and pricier than it looks in October-February, and anyone who wants to actually kite from their front door should really be staying in Preá or Guriú instead and treating Jeri as the town you go to at night.

Guriú
Guriú is the river mouth west of Jericoacoara, in Camocim, on the way to Tatajuba.

Water access and zoning
1. You cannot kite the village bay. ICMBio zoning and the AJK's written Malhada protocol split the water into a swimmer/surfer exclusion zone by the serrote and a sail-only zone by the rocks; the Jeri Kite Zone is a 15-minute WALK west past the Sunset Dune, not a buggy ride. Kites passing the exclusion zone must hold 200 m offshore, and kitesurf has lowest right-of-way against everything afloat.
2. Lessons are banned at that zone outright - 'AULAS de Kitesurf NAO DEVEM ser ministradas no local'. Every beginner is driven by 4x4 or boat to Lagoa do Paraiso, Lagoa Azul or Prea. This single fact dissolves the oldest argument about the place: 'best place on earth to learn' and 'far too strong for me' describe different bodies of water, and both are true.

Hours and conditions
3. Your riding day is 09:00-17:00, set by safety cover, not wind. Private rescue at Malhada closes at 17:00 and the AJK discourages sailing after it; Vila Kalango's watersports centre keeps the same hours. No published hourly wind curve exists for Jeri.
Getting there
4. The logistics truth is the Jijoca step. Cars cannot enter the village, so a rental is parked at Cooperjeri's 24h lot on Av. Manoel Marques de Albuquerque at R$15/day (a central alternative charges R$30) for your whole stay. The final ~20 km, half on sand inside the park, is R$40/person in a jardineira that departs only when full, or R$150 for an immediate private 4x4.
5. JJD is 33-35 km out, 45-60 min door to door, and is no longer the seasonal curiosity its reputation suggests: Gol (direct from Guarulhos), Azul, Latam and VoePass fly it year-round at R$700-1,300 from southern Brazil, with a Localiza desk on site you should probably ignore.
Money
6. Bring cash. Pousadas and established restaurants take cards; same-day buggy tours, beach stalls, tips and the barge crossing do not. The village has two cash points at best - Supermercado Popular on Rua Sao Francisco and a Bradesco Banco Postal at the Correios - and the advertised Banco 24 Horas is really in Jijoca and, as of 2025, almost always dry. The escape hatch is card-to-cash at Mercado Tem de Tudo 2 for ~R$10 debit, R$15 credit.
7. Pay the Taxa de Turismo Sustentavel online before you land: R$41.50 per person for up to 10 days, R$4.15 per extra day, 10 UFIRM under LC 107/2015 as amended by LC 178/2022, collected since 1 Feb 2023. Under-12s, over-60s, disabled visitors with a companion, residents and village property owners are exempt with documents. The '7 days' figure in circulation is wrong; the Prefeitura is not.
Accommodation
8. Best base for a rider with their own gear: Vila Kalango. It is the only village address with an in-house Water Sports Center, a board/kite/sail repair workshop and a guarderia included for guests (09:00-17:00, high season Jul-Jan). It is what makes basing in the village instead of Prea actually workable.
9. Best base for proximity: Essenza, beachfront against the Duna do Por do Sol with the Kite Zone directly behind it - 50 m2 suites, infinity pool, spa, free high-speed wifi, guest-only bistro. No gear storage published, so ask.
10. Anyone who needs to launch alone at eight in the morning should still book Prea and buy the nightlife back with a buggy fare. That is the trade, stated plainly.
Internet and power
11. The internet is a single point of failure. CYBER INFO holds 84.7% of the municipality's 11,643 fixed broadband lines; Starlink has 24 accesses total (0.21%), not the ubiquity often claimed. Mobile is 70% 4G / 11% 5G municipality-wide, and that average is dominated by the inland town, not the village behind the dunes. When Jeri drops offline, it drops together.
12. Power is better than its reputation but unproven. The 1998 network was outgrown and failed repeatedly on holiday dates until Enel committed in May 2018 to nearly double delivered load and go from 9 to 17 substations. Nobody has published a village outage figure since. Ask about generator backup for the router, not just the lights, if you book over Reveillon.
Wind and gear
13. Kite sizes are dictated by month, not preference: 12-14 m in June, 10-12 m in July, a 7-9 m workhorse Aug-Nov, smaller again for the 35+ knot September-to-November afternoons. Water 26-29 C, side-onshore NE/E, flat to light chop. The rider anecdote about a crew arriving with 'only 10 m and up' now reads as simply two sizes over-kited.
14. Rental runs R$340-700/day depending on operator and whether Jeri-Prea transfers are bundled (GoKiteJeri lists R$180/hr, R$450 half day, R$700 full day, autonomous riders only). Bringing your own kit pays for itself in four or five sessions - which is the real reason the gear-storage question decides your hotel.
What matters most
15. The decisions: village with a walked launch inside a 09:00-17:00 window, or Prea with a commute; Aug-Nov for the wind you flew for, or Dec-Jan if you are learning and calmer water matters more than peak strength; and travelling with gear or without - because in the village that question has exactly one clean answer, and its name is Vila Kalango.

WhyCars cannot circulate in Jericoacoara village - the streets are sand and vehicle access is barred; rentals must be left in the entrance parking at Jijoca. Everything inside the village is walkable; everything outside it needs a 4x4 you do not own.
Rental: where and what it costsLocaliza operates a desk at Jericoacoara Regional Airport (JJD). Renting there only makes sense if you are touring the wider Ceará coast either side of Jeri - for Jeri itself you would drive 33 km and then park the car for the duration.

The Prefeitura de Jijoca de Jericoacoara notice states R$41.50 per visitor for a stay of up to 10 days with R$4.15 per additional day, under Lei Complementar nº107/2015 amended by nº178/2022, in force since 1 Feb 2023, the amount pegged to 10 UFIRM. A commercial travel blog quoting '7 days' is wrong. Prefer the municipal page - and note the UFIRM peg means the R$ figure moves each year even when the rule does not.
