Maccagno: the long version, the launch and the rules

    More on Maccagno

The morning Tramontana comes down from Cannobio and hits Maccagno; anything from NW through N to NE works, sideshore and gusty. You launch from the beach at Centro Velico Maccagno, where a wide concrete ramp runs down from the parking and the bottom is pebble and stone. When it blows hard the lake throws up short, steep chop, which is why this reads better for intermediates and above than for anyone learning. The stretch north of Maccagno toward Pino gets good wind too. What you will not find is the infrastructure of Garda or Como: no kite school or rescue operator is based here, and the kite-specific documentation is thin. Best months are April to November, with a narrower May to September window also in circulation.

  2. Pino-Tronzano

    lake · beginner ok

Pino-Tronzano is a school-run water-sports spot on the northern Lombardy shore of Lake Maggiore, working off Surfactive's equipped beach at Corso Europa 1 in Tronzano Lago Maggiore, where windsurf, wingfoil, SUP and kitesurf courses share the same water.

    The model is wrong here

The modelled series peaks at 13% of days and never reaches 15% in any month, at a place that is ridden all season. The figures are drawn rather than dropped, and they are not the answer — the months riders name are.

Pino-Tronzano: the long version, the launch and the rules

    More on Pino-Tronzano

The kite course includes board, kite, wetsuit, harness, the mandatory buoyancy aid and dinghy recovery, which matters because no independent shore-launch corridor is on record here. The wind to plan around is the Inverna, a southerly thermal that runs March to September from the early afternoon at about 8-18 knots. Mornings can bring the northerly Tramontana or Moscendrino, but only under stable high pressure; in unsettled weather the pattern breaks and synoptic or thunderstorm wind takes over. The water is fresh, flatter than open sea, cold outside July and August, and the lake is deep with no standing zone on record at the launch. Come for a course or a supervised session. If you want to arrive with your own kit and self-launch, call first, because whether you can is unconfirmed.

    Getting on the water

Surfactive/La Darsena operates from an equipped lakeside beach at Corso Europa 1 in Tronzano Lago Maggiore, with bar, restaurant, playground and water-sports access. Surfactive's kite course page includes board, kite, wetsuit, harness, mandatory buoyancy aid and dinghy recovery in the course price.

    If it goes wrong

Kite courses include motorboat recovery, and a lift-style motorboat pick-up is sold separately at EUR 20 (2026 price list). The full three-block kite course is EUR 350 and private kite lessons EUR 90 an hour, with board, kite, wetsuit, harness and the compulsory buoyancy aid included. None of that extends to independent riders, and there is no public rescue on this shore.

    Room to rig

equipped beach; exact public rigging dimensions unconfirmed

    Rules and access

2026: No municipal kitesurf ordinance or mapped kite corridor for Pino-Tronzano was found in public search. Surfactive operates as Associazione Sportiva La Darsena ASD and sells school/lift-style kite services with dinghy recovery, so riders should confirm current access and association/school requirements directly before independent launching.

What riders say

5 recurring claims

  1. Riders do not talk about Lago Maggiore like a primary kite holiday lake; the repeated advice is to look at Como, Garda, Idro or Silvaplana unless you are already nearby.

    consensus×5 riders

  2. The usable kite area is mostly the northern lake around Cannobio, Maccagno and Pino-Tronzano; riders asking about Baveno or Belgirate get little encouragement for the southern half.

    consensus×5 riders

  3. Wind windows are narrow and local: riders mention early-morning wind, high pressure plus southerly flow, foehn/north setups, and the need for a next-day or same-day local call rather than trusting a broad holiday forecast.

    consensus×5 riders

  4. There is instruction and rental infrastructure at Pino-Tronzano, but public rider reviews are sparse; it looks more like a multi-sport lake center than a dense kite-camp scene.

    majority×3 riders

  5. When the lake does work it can be proper strong, not gentle beginner wind; local riders warn about mountain-lake gusts and north-wind days well over 40 knots in winter or storm setups.

FAQ

What is the wind like?

A regular morning Tramontana thermal enters from Cannobio and hits Maccagno, usable from NW, N or NE.

Are there kite schools or rental?

Surfactive, based in Pino Tronzano, offers windsurf, wingfoil, SUP and kitesurf courses from an equipped beach, including mandatory buoyancy aids.

How established are these spots?

Both are real, active wind-sports spots, but kite-specific coverage here is thinner than for the bigger Lake Garda or Lake Como hubs.
