Inverna

09:00 · 17:00

Afternoon for the Inverna: roughly 09:00-17:00 across Lake Maggiore, and from the early afternoon at this beach. The morning Tramontana or Moscendrino is a separate northerly thermal.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Pino-Tronzano is a school-run water-sports spot on the northern Lombardy shore of Lake Maggiore, working off Surfactive's equipped beach at Corso Europa 1 in Tronzano Lago Maggiore, where windsurf, wingfoil, SUP and kitesurf courses share the same water.
The kite course includes board, kite, wetsuit, harness, the mandatory buoyancy aid and dinghy recovery, which matters because no independent shore-launch corridor is on record here. The wind to plan around is the Inverna, a southerly thermal that runs March to September from the early afternoon at about 8-18 knots.
Mornings can bring the northerly Tramontana or Moscendrino, but only under stable high pressure; in unsettled weather the pattern breaks and synoptic or thunderstorm wind takes over. The water is fresh, flatter than open sea, cold outside July and August, and the lake is deep with no standing zone on record at the launch.
Come for a course or a supervised session. If you want to arrive with your own kit and self-launch, call first, because whether you can is unconfirmed.

Character

thermal

fills in: Afternoon for the Inverna: roughly 09:00-17:00 across Lake Maggiore, and from the early afternoon at this beach. The morning Tramontana or Moscendrino is a separate northerly thermal.

Typical strength

8-18 knots on a working Inverna afternoon. North-wind days on this stretch of the lake can be much stronger and gustier, reportedly into the 20s and beyond, which is a different kind of day from the thermal.

School-oriented thermal lake wind, with flatter water than open sea. Not on record as a reliable kite destination.
The thermal Inverna blows from March to September from the early afternoon. The morning northerly and afternoon southerly pattern is best in stable high pressure and can fail or be replaced by synoptic or storm winds. Pino reportedly has less afternoon wind statistically than Lake Como, which should be treated as rider opinion rather than official data.

The quiver, in words

Indicative for 75-85 kg, sized off the 8-18 knot Inverna rather than a local measurement: 14-15 m to get going at 8-10 knots, 12 m at 12-14, 9-10 m when the thermal tops out near 18. The school teaches on its own kit, so ask what it rigs that week before turning up with one size.

Direction to shore

The beach sits on the eastern shore and faces west across the lake, and both useful winds run along the lake axis. The southerly Inverna arrives side-shore from your left as you look at the water; the northerly morning wind arrives side-shore from your right. Read off the shoreline orientation, not from a local observation.

Dominant direction

thermal southerly Inverna in the afternoon; northerly Tramontana/Moscendrino in the morning under suitable high-pressure conditions

riders' months

Riders and schools name these months. The model reads lower here, and both are shown rather than averaged.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Beginner suitability rests on the La Darsena courses and boat recovery, not on a public self-launch area on record. Independent riders should confirm launch rules and rescue before assuming casual access.

Rescue

Kite courses include motorboat recovery, and a lift-style motorboat pick-up is sold separately at EUR 20 (2026 price list). The full three-block kite course is EUR 350 and private kite lessons EUR 90 an hour, with board, kite, wetsuit, harness and the compulsory buoyancy aid included.
None of that extends to independent riders, and there is no public rescue on this shore.

Launch

Surfactive/La Darsena operates from an equipped lakeside beach at Corso Europa 1 in Tronzano Lago Maggiore, with bar, restaurant, playground and water-sports access. Surfactive's kite course page includes board, kite, wetsuit, harness, mandatory buoyancy aid and dinghy recovery in the course price.

  • freshwater lake with no standing-depth beginner area on record
  • boat traffic and other lake users
  • equipped beach shared with swimmers, families, SUP, windsurf, wingfoil, wakeboard and wakesurf users
  • thermal wind can be replaced by synoptic or thunderstorm winds on Lake Maggiore
  • cold water outside summer
  • strong northerly or storm winds can create chop and drift risk
Rules & access
2026: No municipal kitesurf ordinance or mapped kite corridor for Pino-Tronzano was found in public search. Surfactive operates as Associazione Sportiva La Darsena ASD and sells school/lift-style kite services with dinghy recovery, so riders should confirm current access and association/school requirements directly before independent launching.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Call Surfactive before you drive up if you plan to kite rather than windsurf or wingfoil; independent launch rules are unconfirmed.
  • Plan on the afternoon Inverna and check live lake readings, not only the large-scale models.
  • Pack neoprene for anything outside high summer: surface water sits around 5-8 C in winter.
  • Expect a family beach shared with swimmers, SUP and wakeboards, so launch and land where the school points you.
  • From Milan Malpensa allow about 70 minutes by car, or take the train to the Pino-Tronzano stop.
  • The motorboat pick-up is a separate EUR 20 (2026) and is the only recovery on offer here, which is worth knowing before you ride downwind of the beach.
