Breva

12:00 · 19:00

midday to afternoon; the Breva starts around midday and in season blows from 12:00 to 19:00, the window worked by the Lake Como kite schools such as 360 In-Sport at Dervio

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Dongo sits on the Como side of the upper lake, north of Dervio, and the wind that makes it work is the Breva: a southerly thermal that builds from midday into the afternoon, April-October. You rig on grass, not sand, and entry and exit are easier here than at several of the tighter Lake Como launches.
Lake Como Kiteboarding is based in the village itself, inside Camping Magic Lake. The water is fresh and deep, around 23-24 C at the surface in high summer and cold the rest of the year, so a long wetsuit earns its space in the bag in spring and autumn. This is not a lake to learn on by yourself.
Shore launches here sit close to rocky banks, moorings and trees, with mountains that bend the wind in ways a global model will not show you, so take boat-based instruction with a school until you know the place. Northerly days are a different sport from Breva days.

thermal

Typical strength

12-22 knots for Breva on Lake Como; Dongo-specific reports give 12-18 knots with gusts over 20 knots

Reliable thermal wind on sunny high-pressure days. Reading it still takes live stations and local judgement rather than a model run.
The season runs April-October, and the schools concentrate regular lessons April-September. Breva is the afternoon wind Dongo is set up for. Tivano and the northerlies are a more technical proposition and go gusty at many Lake Como launches, advanced-only at some of them.

Also on record

around 15 knots for working Breva days; no independent Dongo-only long-term statistic

Direction to shore

Side-shore. The beach looks roughly east-northeast, straight across the lake at Colico, so the southerly Breva runs along the shore rather than into it, and comes in side-onshore when it backs southwest. The band of water close to the beach is lighter than the open lake further out, which is why foilers and windsurfers get going here before kites do.

Dominant direction

southerly Breva in the afternoon; north or northeast winds are secondary morning or weather-wind options

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Standing depth

No shallow standing zone at Dongo is documented anywhere found. The lake authority's own safety warning for the Lario is that the bottom falls away steeply even a short distance from the shore, with soft sediment and irregular ground, so treat the entry as deep water within a few metres of the beach. Indicative, no local measurement.

Tides

none; freshwater lake

Temperature

Summer about 23-24 C surface water; around 24 C in July-August

Winter about 5-6 C surface water

Wetsuit

short wetsuit can be enough in high summer; long wetsuit is more comfortable from May to mid-July and in September; thicker neoprene for spring, autumn and winter

Currents

no tidal current; expect wind-driven drift/chop and local lake-level changes

Freshwater, on the Como side of the upper lake north of Dervio. The lake is very deep, and no standing-depth training zone at Dongo has been confirmed.

Dongo has easy entry and exit and a large lawn for rigging, which puts it among the friendlier Lake Como launches. It is still a lake ringed by rocky shores, banks, moorings, trees and mountain terrain, and shore launching wants a confident rider. Beginners should take boat-based instruction with a school instead of self-launching.

Rescue

Lake Como Kiteboarding teaches at Dongo, and schools on the lake run lift and boat services. Nothing specific to independent riders at Dongo is confirmed.

Launch

A kitesurf spot on the Como side of Lake Como north of Dervio, with a large grassy area for rigging and easy entry and exit. The beach faces Colico across the water, on via Vigna del Lago. Wind close in is lighter than out on the open lake, so the first hundred metres are the slow part of the session.Lake Como Kiteboarding is based in Dongo itself, inside Camping Magic Lake at Via Vigna del Lago 60.

Space

Large lawn.

Hazards riders report 10

  • Lake Como shore launches can be close to rocky beaches, banks, moorings, trees and mountain terrain
  • boat traffic on Lake Como
  • cold water outside summer
  • gusty or strong northerly weather winds such as Ventone/Ricadutta
  • summer swimmers and beach users at Spiaggia di Dongo
  • thermal forecasts from large-scale models may miss Lake Como local wind
  • scheduled ferry and hydrofoil routes, which small craft may not enter
  • bottom falls away steeply within a short distance of the shore; soft sediment and uneven ground
  • lighter, less reliable wind in the band closest to the beach
  • summer swimmers and beach users at Spiaggia di Dongo, who have the first 50 m of water
Rules & access
2026: Kitesurfing on Lake Como is classed as a natante minore under Ordinanza n. 1/2026 of the Autorita di Bacino del Lario e dei Laghi Minori, signed at Menaggio on 20 February 2026. It may be used only in daylight and good visibility, from one hour after sunrise until sunset. The rider must wear an approved lifejacket, keep at least 10 m from other small craft, stay off the scheduled ferry routes and away from ports and their approaches, keep out of areas marked off for other uses, and not go out when dangerous weather is present or obviously coming. Fines run from 60 to 600 euro. Bathing is unregulated within 50 m of the shore, so that is the band you share with swimmers. No Dongo municipal kite ordinance and no mapped kite corridor turned up in public search; confirm launch permission, swimmer separation and any campsite access requirement on site.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Plan the day around the afternoon: the Breva starts around midday and in season runs 12:00 to 19:00.
  • Read the live lake stations before you drive; the standard model runs miss this thermal.
  • Confirm launch access on site if you are not booked with Lake Como Kiteboarding or another school.
  • Skip northerly and storm-wind days unless you already know this lake.
  • Pack a long wetsuit for spring and autumn even when the air feels warm.
  • Expect deep water almost immediately: there is no shallow shelf to stand on and sort a tangle out.
  • Get out past the near-shore band, where the wind is noticeably lighter than on the open lake.
  • The lake ordinance treats a kite as a small craft: daylight only, from an hour after sunrise to sunset, approved lifejacket, 10 m from other craft, off the ferry routes.
