Breva and Tivano

10:30 · 11:00

The Breva fills from around 11:00 in spring and later into the afternoon in summer, then holds to sunset. The Tivano is the other half of the clock, building a few hours after sunset and dying around 10:30-11:00, weaker than the Breva and mostly felt south of Dongo, which includes this stretch. North-wind events run on weather, not on a schedule.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Cremia is a small Lake Como spot on the western shore, straight across from Dervio, and hardly anyone talks about it. Both the southerly Breva and north wind work here. The Breva is the engine, squeezed by the narrowing of the lake between Dervio and Cremia, and it commonly runs above 15-20 knots when it is on.
The catch is the shore: the rigging area is tight and the entry and exit are small, so you land where you launched and you want to do it in one go. That makes it an intermediate-and-up spot, not a beach to learn on.
Dervio-based schools can support a session here, including a boat pick-up for arrivals from Lugano, but there is no public rescue cover and no official kite-zone map. Mountain weather turns fast on this stretch, and there is nowhere convenient to get out downwind.

Typical strength

The Breva in the Alto Lario commonly exceeds 15-20 knots; for Lake Como generally, 15-18 knots with 20-25 knot peaks in a good thermal setup, unconfirmed for Cremia itself.

Cremia works with both Breva and north wind, with the Breva strengthened around Dervio and Cremia by the Venturi effect where the lake narrows.
April-October is the main thermal kitesurf season. North wind and stronger northerly events require caution because upper-lake winds can become rough and gusty.

The quiver, in words

Indicative for 75-85 kg, scaled from the 15-18 knot Breva quoted for this arm of the lake rather than from Cremia sessions: 9-12 m when the Breva is properly in, 12-13 m for the soft start and the soft end of it, 7-9 m if a north wind is running.Nothing kite-size specific to Cremia is published, and a Ventone reaching 40 knots is not a size question but a day off.

Direction to shore

Side-shore in both usable directions. The lake runs roughly north-south here and the western shore faces east, so the southerly Breva arrives along the beach from your right as you look out and the north wind from your left. Neither pushes you back in on its own, which matters more than usual with an entry and exit this small.Derived from the orientation of the lake; no local shore-angle measurement was found.

Dominant direction

southerly Breva in the afternoon; north wind can also work

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Your level

not for beginners hereintermediateadvanced
Cremia is not well known and the rigging and entry/exit space is reduced, so it suits kiters who are already autonomous. Beginner lessons on this side of the lake run out of Dervio; what happens at Cremia is a boat pick-up for arrivals from Lugano, not a supervised teaching base. Rate independent shore use intermediate and advanced only.

Rescue

The rubber-boat pick-up for clients coming in from Lugano is transport, not on-water rescue. No public rescue service for kitesurfing at Cremia.

Launch

Hidden western-shore launch at Cremia, opposite Dervio, with reduced rigging and entry/exit space, so the launch is for autonomous kiters.

Rules & access
2026: no Cremia municipal kitesurf ordinance and no official kite-zone map were found. Current local guidance is simply that the spot is hidden and for autonomous kiters, because the preparation and water entry/exit space is reduced.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Walk the launch and the exit before you pump; the usable shore is small.
  • Do not go out unless you can come back into that same tight exit in the day's conditions.
  • Book boat support through a Dervio school if you want teaching; there is no base at Cremia.
  • Bring a wetsuit even in summer: the surface runs 23-24 C at its warmest and 5-6 C in winter.

Getting there

Airport

Milan Malpensa (MXP), Milan Linate (LIN) and Milan Bergamo (BGY) all work for north Lake Como, and Lugano is close on the Swiss side; only the Malpensa-Cremia routing is documented.

Route

Cremia is on the western lake road opposite Dervio, handy if you are coming in from Lugano, where a boat pick-up runs for school clients. By road from Milan Malpensa it is about 94 km.

FAQ

Is Cremia suitable for beginners?

No. The launch is described as hidden with reduced rigging and entry/exit space, suited to autonomous kitesurfers rather than a casual beginner beach.

When is the best time to kitesurf at Cremia?

April to October is the main thermal season, with the southerly Breva building through the afternoon.

What is the wind like at Cremia?

The Breva commonly exceeds 15-20 knots here, strengthened by the Venturi effect where the lake narrows near Dervio and Cremia; north wind can also work but is more weather-dependent.

Are there kite schools or rescue at Cremia?

Sports Paradise offers rubber-boat pick-up on request as part of its shuttle service; no public rescue service specific to Cremia was verified.
