The Breva starts at the southern end of the lake around midday and works its way north, so the Alto Lario gets it late: expect it roughly between 11:30 and 13:30, earlier in spring, nearer 13:00 in high summer. It then holds through the afternoon and often into the early evening. Mornings belong to the Tivano out of the north.

The spot

Domaso is a working Lake Como kite base on the northwestern shore of the Alto Lario, but read the fine print: what is on offer here is boat and lift kiting rather than an easy beach launch.

Thermal wind and season

The wind is the Breva, a southerly thermal that builds from late morning or around midday and runs the afternoon across the upper lake. The useful season is broadly April to September or October, with the thermal commonly around 15 knots and often 15-20 knots when the upper-lake Venturi effect is working.

Water and beginner lessons

Water is fresh, flat to choppy wind swell, around 23-24 C on the surface in high summer and far colder the rest of the year. Beginners do learn here, from boats, with radio coaching and a rescue craft; self-launching off the Domaso waterfront is another matter, and kite launching is not allowed from at least one stretch of its beach.

Resort amenities

The town is a busy summer lakeside resort with campsites, beaches, windsurfers and wingfoilers, and enough mountain and lake around it to fill a no-wind week.

For a 75-85 kg rider on a twin-tip, 10-12 m covers the ordinary 15-18 knot Breva.Keep a 9 m for the afternoons when easterly flow reinforces the thermal past 20 knots, and a 13-14 m or a foil setup for the early build and the weak-thermal days that stall around 10-12 knots.Northerly Ventone and Foehn days are a different exercise and can call for 7-8 m.

The wind season runs broadly April to October, narrowed elsewhere to April to mid-September or March to September. May and June are the most reliable stretch, something like 20-25 days of wind a month; a rideable day six or seven days out of seven is claimed locally and unconfirmed.

Breva is the afternoon wind you plan around. Tivano is a morning north/northeast thermal, and Ventone, Foehn and Ricaduta are synoptic northerlies: stronger, gustier, much less forgiving. Large-scale forecast models routinely miss the thermal here.

Riding independently and using the shore takes real self-sufficiency: the Lake Como beach spots, Gera Lario, Cremia and Valmadrera among them, want good dexterity and autonomy or an experienced rider.

Rescue

On the water the practical rescue is the school and lift boats; they are there for their own students and guests, not as a public service, so an independent rider has no dedicated chase boat.

Lake-wide cover is the Coast Guard, which runs a 24/7 lake rescue coordination room for Como, Garda and Maggiore, with the Lake Como unit based at Menaggio on the same shore.

Call 1530 for an emergency on the water, 112 for anything else.

Launch

Domaso works mainly as a base for boat and lift kiting rather than a casual beach launch. Morgan Kite School rigs and de-rigs on the grass at Sporting Club Domaso, then runs riders out by rubber boat for assisted independent sessions, and the club presents its base as a departure point for the windiest parts of the lake.Launching and accessKite launching from the ordinary town beach is not accepted: local guidance restricts it to the Livo river mouth and to expert riders. The access on that side is off Case Sparse, on the left bank of the Livo looking downstream, with paid parking within about fifty metres of the water. Independent riders arriving without a school should assume they need to find that corner, not the main beachfront.

2026: no Comune di Domaso kitesurf ordinance and no mapped kite corridor is published. Kites cannot be launched from the beach in front of the Lake Como Beach Hostel, and the river mouth is the only launch that is tolerated, for expert riders only.

Treat that as access custom until the Comune di Domaso or the Autorita di Bacino del Lario puts it in writing.

Schools that ride here

Rider tips

Book a boat or lift session, or a school, unless you are fully independent; do not turn up expecting a large public sandy kite beach at Domaso.
If you are launching on your own, the access to find is the Livo river mouth off Case Sparse, with paid parking about fifty metres from the water.
Watch the Dervio and Cremia stations: the Breva builds in the middle of the lake first and gives the Alto Lario roughly an hour of warning. Generic models under-call it.
Look for the Breva in the late morning in spring and later in the afternoon in high summer.
Treat Ventone, Foehn and Ricaduta days as a different exercise. Stronger, gustier, less forgiving than the Breva.
Mornings are the calm window before the Breva, which is when the flat-water paddling and the lessons happen.
Bring a wetsuit outside high summer, and expect a packed waterfront around the campsites and beach bars in July and August.

Airport

Bergamo Orio al Serio is the nearest airport to Domaso; Milan Malpensa and Milan Linate are the other common ways in for Lake Como.

Route

By car, follow the western and northern Lake Como roads to Domaso. By public transport, Colico station is about 12 km away and Domaso has the nearest ferry jetty; most visitors route in through the Milan-area airports and then regional rail, bus and ferry.
