The wind at Marone comes twice. The morning thermal fills between 07:00 and 10:00 and averages 18-20 knots in June, July and August; a lighter south breeze follows in the early afternoon at 14-16 knots. That makes it an alarm-clock spot: ride early or ride underpowered.
Maselli Kite School's Lake Iseo base sits on the Brescia shore at Via Battista Cristini 13, with lessons, assisted lift and kite rental, and most of what happens at Marone happens through it. Water is deep freshwater, more than 2 m off the shore, choppy once the thermal is up and cold outside high summer.
Nobody has published a launch-space measurement, a kitesurf rule or a rescue arrangement for Marone, so a first visit should start with a local briefing. Lake Iseo stays quieter than the better-known Lombard lakes, which cuts both ways: less traffic on the water, fewer people around if something goes wrong.

June, July and August bring the strongest morning thermal, 18-20 knots between 07:00 and 10:00, with the lighter southerly Ora at 14-16 knots from about 14:00. Riding on Lake Iseo is reported from May into late October, though not specifically from the Marone launch.
Iseo blows lighter than Como or Garda, so pack a size or two bigger than you would for those.

18-20 in the morning thermal; 14-16 in the early afternoon breeze

The quiver, in words

11-14 m is the working Iseo range for a 75-85 kg rider: the small end for the 18-20 knot morning thermal, the big end for the 14-16 knot afternoon breeze. Bring more kite than you would for Garda or Como.

Direction to shore

Sideshore both ways. The shore at Marone runs roughly north-south with the water to the west, so the morning northerly comes in from your right as you face out and the afternoon southerly from your left; neither blows straight onto the beach or straight off it.Derived from the lake axis and the shoreline orientation, not from a measurement at the launch.

Dominant direction

Two thermal winds: the morning northerly, known on the lake as ol vet, and l'Ora from the south in the afternoon.

riders' months

Riders and schools name these months. The model reads lower here, and both are shown rather than averaged.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Rescue

No public rescue service and no rescue-boat requirement on the lake. The school's lift boat is the cover most riders here have, which also means there is little help on the water outside its hours.

Launch

Maselli Kite School runs the Lake Iseo base from Via Battista Cristini 13 in Marone, working off a small beach a few metres from the Mad Hops lido: lessons, kite rental 07:00-19:00, kite testing, and a lift or assisted lift. Getting onto the water here is usually done by boat or lift rather than by walking off the beach. When the southerly Ora is up, the other east-shore option is the Vello-Toline stretch, reached along the cycle path with a wheeled trolley.

Space

The school works off a small beach beside the Mad Hops lido, with lakefront parking in Marone. No public rigging area has been measured, and riders describe this lake as having no practical shore launch: getting out generally means a boat or a school lift.

Hazards riders report 10

  • Sometimes irregular thermal winds
  • Cold water
  • Ferry traffic to Monte Isola
  • Less supervision than busier lakes
  • Deep lake water
  • Chop
  • Thermal wind windows are time-dependent
  • Ferry and general lake traffic near Monte Isola are plausible concerns here, unconfirmed in any Marone rule.
  • No practical shore launch: getting out generally needs a boat or a school lift
  • Algae. In summer 2026 weed growth stopped the lake ferries docking at Marone at all
Rules & access
No kitesurf-specific rule for Marone. Lake Iseo navigation runs under the regional presidential ordinance of 3 July 1997 no. 58600, integrated by regional ordinance no. 1 of 7 August 2009: navigation is prohibited inside marked bathing zones and in reed beds, speed is capped at 5 knots within 50 m of the shore and on a course perpendicular to it, 10 knots from 50 to 150 m, 27 knots beyond by day and 10 at night, with a 10-knot cap in the Monte Isola zone.
Kitesurf falls under minor craft: a buoyancy aid for each person is required, and once you are beyond the 50 m coastal strip you are expected to carry something that makes you visible. A Comune di Marone ordinance bans personal watercraft on its stretch. As of 2026 nothing reserves water or sand here for kitesurfing.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Set the alarm: the strongest window is 07:00-10:00.
  • Book the lift or a briefing before your first session; the thermal pattern and the lake traffic are not obvious from the shore.
  • Rig in the 11-14 range, which is what Iseo usually asks for.
  • Pack a full wetsuit outside high summer: winter surface water averages 5.9 C against 23.4 C in summer.
  • Keep clear of the Monte Isola ferry line when you head out from the lakefront.
  • Rig in the 11-14 range, which is what Iseo usually asks for, and bring bigger than your Garda kit.
  • Do not count on walking in off the beach; ask the school about the boat or lift before you drive up.
  • Ask about weed before you travel in high summer: in 2026 algae was thick enough at Marone to stop the ferries berthing.
