Marina di Casal Velino & Case del Conte

beginner-friendly

2 spots

Marina di Casal Velino and Case del Conte are two low-key kite spots on the Cilento coast, a UNESCO-listed, still-rural stretch of Campania south of Salerno: river-mouth kiting at Casal Velino, a small Scirocco wave spot on Baia Arena at Case del Conte.
Neither is a kite-scene destination, and both sit inside a national park where tourism runs on car-based, village-to-village Italian summer habits rather than resort infrastructure. It suits independent intermediate riders happy to build a trip around hiking, archaeology and slow coastal Italy, not people looking for a kite camp or nightlife.

The spot cards

Good to know before you go3

  • Case del Conte itself is a small, still-developing hamlet — don't expect much on-site beyond the beach; base in Agnone Cilento or Casal Velino's Marina fraction for actual services.
  • Casal Velino's own train station is closed; the working stations (Vallo della Lucania–Castelnuovo, Ascea) are a drive away, reinforcing that a car isn't optional.
  • Rocks are noted at the Case del Conte/Baia Arena launch.

The spots

  1. Marina di Casal Velino

    sea · beginner ok

Marina di Casal Velino is a Cilento beach town on the Tyrrhenian side of Campania, and the kite record for it is short because nobody has documented it properly.

Marina di Casal Velino: the long version, the launch and the rules

More on Marina di Casal Velino

The water is choppy, with small waves when a perturbation comes through, and the piece of beach people actually ride from is by the river mouth, where there is plenty of sand. The wind is W, at its best when a summer thermal gets reinforced by a westerly perturbation. Maestrale from the northwest and Libeccio from the southwest both arrive side-onshore on this west-facing coast, so nothing here blows you out to sea. May to September is the season, and wingfoilers and windsurfers use the same water. Skip it if you want a supervised beginner beach: the level ratings conflict, intermediate in one and any level in the other, no school was confirmed at the launch, and there is no kite-specific rescue. The hazards are the ordinary ones: fishing rods by the river mouth, wave breakers, rocks near the shore, plus bathers in July and August.

    Getting on the water

Medium beach launch by the mouth of the Alento, with plenty of sand to work with. The sand runs for kilometres from the river mouth towards the rocky shore at Pioppi, but the seafront stretch is lined with equipped beach clubs, so the free sand by the river is the practical spot in summer.

    If it goes wrong

No kite-specific rescue. Sea emergencies go to 1530, the coast guard line, or to 112. Through the summer the seafront is lined with equipped beach clubs whose lifeguards watch their own marked bathing areas, which is not cover for a kiter drifting downwind, and whether any of them would put a boat out is unconfirmed.

    Room to rig

medium; wide by the river mouth, squeezed by beach concessions along the seafront in summer

    Rules and access

No kitesurf ordinance for this beach or this stretch of Cilento coast was found for 2026. What governs it is the annual bathing-safety ordinance of the Capitaneria di porto di Salerno together with the comune's own beach ordinance, and neither text could be obtained. Practically: this is a Blue Flag beach with equipped beach clubs along the seafront, so in summer there is a marked bathing area a kite must not cross, and any launch corridor would have to be authorised by the comune before it is buoyed. The 300 m corridor, the 30 m widening to 80 m and the body-drag-to-150 m rule that circulate for Italian kite spots come from Ordinanza 34/2011 of the Capitaneria di porto di Ancona, which covers Numana, Ancona and Senigallia on the Adriatic and has no force here.

Case del Conte: the long version, the launch and the rules

    More on Case del Conte

It is a chop and small-wave sea spot that only really works on SE, SSE and S: Scirocco comes in side-shore, and Ostro is the other one to watch. October and November have the most agreement behind them, so do not build a summer thermal week around this beach. The bottom is sand. Parking is free, and the wave riding is good on a southerly that is not oversizing everything. Usual strength is put below 10 knots, which sits badly beside the accounts of strong gusty frontal days; no working range has been published. Rocks sit close in, and access is given as winter period only, which in July and August matters more than the wind does. It gets marked beginner-friendly, and on a wave day with rocks around that call is yours to make on the sand.

    Getting on the water

Medium sandy beach launch at Baia Arena and Case del Conte, free parking, access allowed only in the winter period.

    Rules and access

2026: the Guardia Costiera Agropoli bathing-safety ordinance n. 22/2026 covers this stretch, and no kite corridor specific to Case del Conte is published. Access is also given as winter period only, which is unconfirmed for 2026.

Getting there & around

  • Salerno–Costa d'Amalfi Airport (Pontecagnano), open for commercial service since July 2024, is the closest airport, about 21km southeast of Salerno.
  • Naples–Capodichino is the larger regional hub; Salerno's airport is explicitly positioned to take pressure off Naples traffic.
Car neededEffectively yes — the Cilento is sparsely populated and rugged with limited long-range transport links, and moving between villages, beaches and trailheads without a car is impractical.
TransfersNo organized kite-transfer service exists. The coast is served by SS18 Tirrena Inferiore (the coastal state road); the nearest active rail stations are Vallo della Lucania-Castelnuovo and Ascea, both handling regional and high-speed trains, and neither is at Casal Velino itself, whose own former station has closed.

Seasons beyond windMarina di Casal Velino's main kite season is given as May to September, driven by the summer thermal reinforced by west perturbation wind; Case del Conte is also described as having winter-period access, unusual for this group of spots.

What riders say

6 recurring claims

  1. Wind reliability is the catch: riders say thermal wind can happen, but you need luck, a west or northwest base and sometimes frontal systems.

    consensus×5 riders

  2. Cilento rewards riders who move around; locals describe several possible spots within driving range rather than one beach that works in every wind.

    consensus×4 riders

  3. August is the month to avoid if you care about launching space and road sanity; one regular says it is off limits because of traffic and packed beaches.

    majority×3 riders

  4. Case del Conte is the wave-oriented call for southerly wind, with enough beach to use but some rocks in the mental checklist.

    majority×3 riders

  5. Casal Velino is more summer-thermal and river-mouth oriented, but riders warn about submerged wave-breakers, rocks, fishing rods and buoys.

    majority×3 riders

  6. The area feels under-promoted for how good the coast can be; riders praise the nature but say institutions have not really built it into a kite destination.

Scene & life

VibeRural, agricultural Cilento rather than a kite or beach-party scene — the wider area's economy runs on olives, figs, wine grapes and fishing, with summer tourism concentrated but low-key even in the beach hamlets.
Must tryCilento's food identity is tied to the 'Dieta Mediterranea' heritage listing; local olive oil and Montecorice's own wine production are regional staples.
Activities
  • Hiking in the Cilento, Vallo di Diano e Alburni National Park — trails through beech and oak forest, peaks up to Monte Cervati at 1,899m
  • Cave exploration at Castelcivita, Palinuro and Sant'Angelo
  • Medieval hill villages scattered through the park
Day trips
  • Paestum — Greek/Roman archaeological site with three well-preserved Doric temples
  • Velia (ancient Elea) — ancient Greek city site
  • Certosa di Padula — monastery complex in the Vallo di Diano
Pairs withA Cilento National Park road trip — hiking, archaeology and quiet beaches — rather than a dedicated kite trip; wingfoil and windsurf share both spots.

History & trivia
