When it fills in

Thermal: nothing in the morning, the sea breeze fills through the early afternoon and dies towards evening. The better days are the ones where a westerly front adds to it, and a front can blow at any hour. No clock times have been recorded for this beach.

Marina di Casal Velino is a Cilento beach town on the Tyrrhenian side of Campania, and the kite record for it is short because nobody has documented it properly.
The water is choppy, with small waves when a perturbation comes through, and the piece of beach people actually ride from is by the river mouth, where there is plenty of sand. The wind is W, at its best when a summer thermal gets reinforced by a westerly perturbation.
Maestrale from the northwest and Libeccio from the southwest both arrive side-onshore on this west-facing coast, so nothing here blows you out to sea. May to September is the season, and wingfoilers and windsurfers use the same water.
Skip it if you want a supervised beginner beach: the level ratings conflict, intermediate in one and any level in the other, no school was confirmed at the launch, and there is no kite-specific rescue. The hazards are the ordinary ones: fishing rods by the river mouth, wave breakers, rocks near the shore, plus bathers in July and August.

Typical strength

No wind record exists for this beach. The nearest long-running coastal stations down the Cilento, at Capo Palinuro, average about 6 kt over the year with a west-north-west mean direction and average gusts of 10 kt. The background wind is light, then, and the rideable days come from the summer afternoon thermal and from westerly fronts rather than from a standing breeze. Regional and indicative, not a measurement for Marina di Casal Velino.

The best condition is a thermal wind reinforced by west perturbation winds, above all in summer.
May-September is the main window, with pleasant weather from March to November and a wetsuit needed outside the season. It is otherwise open all year round, and the required level is rated intermediate.

The quiver, in words

No local reports of what people ride. On a west-facing Tyrrhenian beach living off a summer thermal, a 75-85 kg rider should plan a 12 m as the everyday kite, a 9 m for the days a westerly front puts real pressure behind it, and something bigger or a foil for the many marginal afternoons.Indicative, derived from the regional wind picture rather than from riders here.

Direction to shore

Maestrale (NW) and Libeccio (SW), the two named winds for this west-facing spot, are side-onshore rather than offshore.

Dominant direction

W; Maestrale NW and Libeccio SW are also cited for the west-facing Cilento coast

riders' months

Riders and schools name these months. The model reads lower here, and both are shown rather than averaged.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Rescue

No kite-specific rescue. Sea emergencies go to 1530, the coast guard line, or to 112. Through the summer the seafront is lined with equipped beach clubs whose lifeguards watch their own marked bathing areas, which is not cover for a kiter drifting downwind, and whether any of them would put a boat out is unconfirmed.

Launch

Medium beach launch by the mouth of the Alento, with plenty of sand to work with. The sand runs for kilometres from the river mouth towards the rocky shore at Pioppi, but the seafront stretch is lined with equipped beach clubs, so the free sand by the river is the practical spot in summer.

Rules & access
No kitesurf ordinance for this beach or this stretch of Cilento coast was found for 2026. What governs it is the annual bathing-safety ordinance of the Capitaneria di porto di Salerno together with the comune's own beach ordinance, and neither text could be obtained.
Practically: this is a Blue Flag beach with equipped beach clubs along the seafront, so in summer there is a marked bathing area a kite must not cross, and any launch corridor would have to be authorised by the comune before it is buoyed.
The 300 m corridor, the 30 m widening to 80 m and the body-drag-to-150 m rule that circulate for Italian kite spots come from Ordinanza 34/2011 of the Capitaneria di porto di Ancona, which covers Numana, Ancona and Senigallia on the Adriatic and has no force here.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Rig by the river mouth; it is the only launch anyone has described in any detail.
  • Treat it as an intermediate spot unless a local school tells you otherwise on the day.
  • In July and August, ride only where an authorized corridor and the beach signs allow.
  • Expect chop as the default; the small waves need a proper perturbation behind them.
  • The 300 m kite corridor rule people quote for Italian beaches is an Ancona ordinance and does not apply on this coast; go by the comune's signs and the Salerno coastguard ordinance for the year.
  • Sea emergencies are 1530 or 112. There is no kite rescue here and the beach-club lifeguards watch the swimming area, not you.
