On the clock

13:00 · 18:00

13:00-18:00 average for the W/NW thermal.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Lido Lo Scoglio, at Pozzano on the Castellammare di Stabia shore, is a bay with a beach on the Gulf of Naples, and the public record on it is thinner than for a proper kite beach. The water is flat and the bottom is boulder and rock, so booties are not optional.
Wind is W and NW, sideshore, 5-20 knots, with the thermal filling in around 13:00 and holding to about 18:00; frontal W and NW days work too. April through October is the season, and that is the same window in which Imparato Surf Beach runs its kitesurf courses, beginner ones included.
It is a beach-club coastline: umbrellas, a restaurant and bar, families in the water from June to September. The 2026 Castellammare di Stabia ordinance n. 35/2026 bans transit, anchoring and stopping in bathing zones by any craft, kite and windsurf named, except where regularly authorized, so find out whether a corridor is active before you carry a kite down.
Nobody has documented the standing depth, the tides or the current here.

The quiver, in words

A light-wind quiver spot. For 75-85 kg a 12 m covers the 12-18 kt end of the W/NW thermal and is the kite that stays rigged; a 9 m only earns its place on the rare frontal day that touches 20 kt.Most of the season sits lower than the forecast promises, around 8-13 kt, which is 14-15 m twin-tip territory or, as the locals ride it, an 18-21 m light-wind foil kite on a race board with a central fin so you can point off the beach straight after launch.Indicative sizing drawn from rider reports; no school here publishes a size chart.

The model is wrong here

The model reads 13% of days at its best month, which does not sit with the season this record states. The figures are kept and drawn as hatching so no wind colour can be read off them, and the ringed months are the ones riders name.

riders' months

Riders and schools name these months. The model reads lower here, and both are shown rather than averaged.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Standing depth

No depth profile has been published for the bay, and the bottom is boulder and rock rather than a sand shelf, so there is no wading area to learn in.In the bathing season a concessioned beach on this coast has to mark the limit of safe swimming — the 1.60 m depth line — with at least three white buoys laid parallel to the shore, so on a staffed stretch that buoy line is the practical edge of standing depth. Booties either way.

Tides

Small and semidiurnal, two highs and two lows a day. The swing reaches about 0.3-0.4 m at the top of the cycle and stays under 0.2 m on the quiet days, so it changes nothing about the launch or the rock.

Temperature

26.8°C summer · 13.6°C winter

Wetsuit

Warm-water gear through the summer, a full suit in winter on the local sea-temperature averages.

Rescue

VHF channel 16

Lido Lo Scoglio is a staffed bathing establishment, and in the bathing season a concession on this coast has to keep a qualified lifeguard on duty through its opening hours, one for every 80 m of sea frontage, from a raised lookout post within 25 m of the waterline with binoculars, a 200 m floating rescue line on a reel, fins, a megaphone and the white-and-red flag mast.
That cover is pointed at swimmers close in, not at a kiter going downwind past the boulders. Nothing kite-specific exists. Emergencies go to the Castellammare di Stabia coastguard, staffed 24 hours: 1530 free, 081 8711077, or VHF channel 16.

Launch

Access is off the Pozzano junction toward Lido Lo Scoglio, a bay with a beach. Lido Lo Scoglio itself is an established beach club on Via Sorrentina with beach, terrace and platform, open daily 08:15 to 18:45 — which is to say the whole 13:00-18:00 thermal window falls inside club hours, and inside the swimmers.

Rules & access
2026: coastguard ordinance n. 35 of 29 May 2026 governs this coast, the maritime district of Castellammare di Stabia, which also takes in Vico Equense, Meta and Piano di Sorrento. It regulates bathing and connected activity from dawn to sunset. The bathing season it works to runs from the third Saturday of May to the third Sunday of September, and a region or comune may shift the start by a week. Inside that season the water within 200 m of any beach, and 100 m off cliff coast, is reserved for swimmers: transit, mooring, anchoring and stopping there by any craft, windsurf and kitesurf named, is banned unless regularly authorised. Launch and landing corridors exist only where a club holds one by concession, and the only corridor the ordinance names on this stretch is at Marina di Alimuri in Meta — none is listed at Pozzano. Outside the season dates the bathing-zone ban lapses.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Wear booties: the bottom is boulder and rock.
  • Ride the thermal window, roughly 13:00 to 18:00.
  • Talk to Imparato Surf Beach or the beach club before launching in bathing season.
  • Confirm an authorized corridor is active; ordinance n. 35/2026 otherwise keeps kites out of the swimmer zones.
  • Coming from Naples: exit at Castellammare di Stabia, through two tunnels toward Sorrento, left at the Pozzano junction, then about 400 m to Lido Lo Scoglio.
  • Ride the thermal window, roughly 13:00 to 18:00 — the same hours the beach club is open and full.
  • The bathing-season ban runs third Saturday of May to third Sunday of September (2026). Outside those dates the 200 m swimmer zone stops applying.
  • No kite corridor is named here in the 2026 ordinance, so assume you are in the swimmer zone unless someone shows you an authorisation.
  • Bring the biggest kite you own. Forecasts of 8-13 kt for this coast run optimistic.

FAQ

Is Lido Lo Scoglio suitable for beginners?

Yes. Imparato Surf Beach runs kitesurf courses for beginners at this Campania bay from April to October, with proposals for other levels too.

What is the wind like at Lido Lo Scoglio?

The spot is powered by a W/NW thermal, typically filling from about 13:00 to 18:00, with W/NW frontal wind also possible; the water is flat with a rocky, boulder seabed.

When is the best time to kitesurf there?

April through October is the useful season, matching both the thermal wind window and the local kite school's course calendar.

Are there rules or restricted zones?

A 2026 Capitaneria di Porto ordinance bans kitesurf transit, anchoring and stopping in bathing zones except through authorized launch corridors, so riders should confirm the active corridor before rigging.
