Prea
Praia do Preá is the working kite spot for the whole Jericoacoara area: a long, largely obstacle-free flat-water playground with steady 20-30kn trades, home to the region's own airport (JJD) and a growing strip of kite-dedicated pousadas and schools. It is quieter and far less 'scene'-y than Jeri, which is exactly the point - it's for riders who want to walk from bed to launch and treat nightlife as an optional buggy ride away rather than the main event. Good for beginners at low tide (flat) and for wave riders at high tide (1-2m), but if you want restaurants, a proper party, or a non-kiting partner entertained, you need to base in or regularly visit Jeri. Not for anyone expecting an independent village vibe of its own the way Jeri or Prea's bigger cousins have - Preá is compact and built around the kite industry.

Editor's brief
Prea is not Jeri's satellite - it is the corridor's designated kitesurf beach. Jeri's village bay is closed to sailing and Malhada is zoned by ICMBio ordinance (200 m offshore, instruction banned outright, nothing after 17:00 when private rescue stops), so the schools, the storage and the lodges legally live here. The wind is a clock, not a lottery: ~20 kn mornings, 25-30 kn afternoons, best from about 11:00, 25-35 kn in the Jul-Dec peak with the biggest days around the Sep-Nov full and new moons. Pack 8-12 m; water 27-28 C. The same beach is flat at low tide and throws ~2 m waves at high tide. The kiteforum wiki calling Prea 'tide independent' is simply wrong - beginners who book without reading a tide table get the wrong lesson. Logistics correction that matters most: Prea is reached on asphalt. Ceara paved 12.74 km of the CE-182 from the CE-085 into the village, so a normal rental car drives to your pousada door. The 4x4-or-nothing rule is Jeri's problem, not Prea's. JJD is ~35 min away against 55 min / 35 km for Jeri village: R$100 per person shared, R$350 private up to four, R$400 up to six (2026). Fortaleza is the fallback at 270-284 km, about four hours on a potholed CE-085. Money is pre-loaded. Nobody could confirm an ATM in Prea, and one corridor guide claims Jeri has none either. Draw reais in Fortaleza or at JJD; barracas, buggy drivers and market stalls are cash-only. Best bases, ranked by what they actually publish: Kite Lodge Brazil (R$570-830/night, eight units 26-47 m2, pool, gear storage, La Praia restaurant, in-house school) for the all-in beachfront lodge. Chalet du Kite for anyone with calls to take - 70 Mbps fibre plus Starlink backup, adjustable electric desk and monitor on request, 100 m to the beach, 60 m2 chalets and a 120 m2 main house, no pool, no published rate, WhatsApp only. Rancho do Peixe at the top end: 8 bungalows of 80 m2 on 64,000 m2, its own kite/wing/foil centre and its own FOR and JJD transfers. Value picks below it: Pousada Rota do Kite at 35 m from the launch (~EUR48), EcoVillage Meu Xodo (~EUR27) as the floor, Kabana (~EUR382) as the ceiling. What nobody tells you, part one: fixed internet in Cruz municipality is a two-ISP duopoly (CYBER INFO 64.9%, Brandaonet 34.1%) with a 13.6 Mbps median and 36 Starlink lines in the whole municipality. 'WiFi included' means nothing without a published number. Part two: mobile is better here than in Jeri - 86% 4G and 32% 5G in Cruz against Jijoca's ~70% and ~11% - but no source ranks Vivo vs Claro vs TIM at the launch itself. Part three: health runs through Cruz, not Jeri. A family-health post (UBSF Francisco Dias dos Santos) sits in the village, the 24 h Hospital Municipal Dona Maria Muniz in Cruz is on (88) 3660-1262, and there is no trauma unit in the municipality - serious injury is a ~300 km evacuation. Insure for it. Part four: the national-park ticket you may have read about is not being charged. TRF5 blocked it 2-1 on 10 Dec 2025. The only live charge is Jijoca's R$41.50 per person for up to 10 days, and only when you cross into Jeri village. Decision one: kite-clean life or town. Prea is bed-to-launch; Jeri is a 12 km buggy hop for dinner and forro, or a 15 km downwinder past Pedra Furada if you would rather sail there. Decision two: rent a car only for the lagoon circuit - it is dead weight for Jeri, where vehicles are banned at the gate. Decision three: book on published specs, not photographs; in a village where AC and pool status is unlisted for half the pousadas, the properties that publish numbers are the ones telling you the truth.
What nobody tells you first
- Don't expect Jeri's restaurant/bar density here - Preá is compact and kite-industry-built, plan on buggying to Jeri for variety
- Because most kite schools/operators concentrate here, peak-season gear/lesson slots can book out - reserve ahead if you need lessons or rental
- The area's tides matter a lot: low tide flat water is great for beginners/freestyle, but the same stretch turns into 1-2m waves at high tide - check tide times against your skill level before launching
