Porto Pollo (also known as Isola dei Gabbiani/Isuledda) is northern Sardinia's classic kite-and-windsurf isthmus: a sandy spit between two bays in the comune of Palau, facing the Strait of Bonifacio with reliable Mistral and Ponente wind and a long windsurf-club heritage. It has a low-key beach-bar evening scene of its own but is not a nightlife destination - for real restaurant variety, shopping and going-out life you base in Palau town a few minutes away, and for a proper night out you go further to the Costa Smeralda. It suits intermediate-to-advanced riders and camp-goers who want dependable wind plus easy day-trip access to the La Maddalena archipelago; it's less suited to riders wanting resort polish or car-free convenience.

Editor's brief
1. Kitesurfing is banned in the Bay of Porto Pollo from the Sunday before Easter to 10 November - that bay belongs to windsurfers, dinghies and catamarans by maritime ordinance (Capitaneria La Maddalena 38/2016). Kites ride the Porto Liscia side, on the western flank of the isthmus. 2. The legal kite launch is therefore ~900 m from where most of the lodging sits - a five-minute drive, not a walk with a board bag in 30 knots. 3. The Maestrale fills in around midday and runs 15-30 knots into the early evening, April to November, venturi-accelerated through the Strait of Bonifacio and routinely stronger than forecast; local reports over 40 knots. Riding is sunrise-to-sunset only, by law. Logistics truth: Olbia airport is 47-50 km, ~50 minutes by car. The bus alternative is real but seasonal - Caramelli runs Palau port to Porto Pollo and Isola dei Gabbiani five times a day 1 July-31 August (reduced 16-30 June and 1-15 September), 34 minutes, fare unpublished, tickets on board. Outside mid-June to mid-September nothing scheduled reaches the spit. Palau town is 7 km away and holds the three ATMs (Banco di Sardegna Via Roma 9 and Via Fonte Vecchia, UniCredit Via Nazionale), the supermarkets and the La Maddalena ferry, from EUR 3.70 per foot passenger. Best base for self-catering: Windsurf Village - types A, B and C sleeping 1-6, equipped kitchen, terrace, free wifi, ceiling fans standard and air conditioning only on request, and a free daily guest shuttle to the kite zone June-September. That shuttle is the reason to book it. Best bases on the spit otherwise: Hotel Le Dune, Via Tramontana 1-3 (double and triple rooms, seafood restaurant, parking, dinghy hire and car rental in-house) and Hotel Porto Puddu, Via Tramontana 3, 500 m from the beach (free wifi, free parking, beach-gear and car rental, coast shuttle, pet-friendly). Palau town stays the base for anyone who wants evenings. What nobody tells you, part one: inside the launch corridor - 200 m out, 80 m wide, orange buoys at 30 m spacing, 10 m at each edge reserved for schools - you body-drag or ride slow and upright, no jumps, returning riders have priority, you drop the kite before the low-water line, and a flotation aid is compulsory. Breaches fall under the Navigation Code, not etiquette. What nobody tells you, part two: the nearest hospital by map is Ospedale Paolo Merlo on La Maddalena, open H24 with a hyperbaric unit - but it is on an island reached only by ferry. The road answer is Olbia's Giovanni Paolo II, ~50 minutes. For anything less, Palau's guardia medica turistica at the Poliambulatorio Achei runs daily 10:00-17:00, tel 0789 709396; minor-code ER visits cost EUR 15-25. What nobody tells you, part three: Sardinia averages about nine power interruptions per user per year, roughly double the Italian rate, and no property here advertises a generator. Drones are banned outright over the whole La Maddalena national park - not over the kite zone, but over every boat day you will take. There is no eco or park fee for riding. Decision one: July-August buys you the bus, the shuttles and every centre open, at the price of Ferragosto crowds, ferry queues and peak rates. June or September buys quieter water and thinner services. October can be windy but is car-only and half shut. Decision two: hire a car at Olbia or not. Almost certainly yes, unless you are staying on the spit itself in high summer and are content to ride, eat and sleep within the same kilometre. Decision three: bring kites or rent. Rental quivers run 5-14 m (Naish Pivot and Triad at the portopollo.it centre); Sportif prices a week at GBP 350, two weeks GBP 600, storage another GBP 135-170. Tuition is EUR 90/hour privately, EUR 280 for four hours, EUR 420 for six. Before you drive round to the corridor, check the Panoramicams kite-zone webcam - there are eight cams on this spit and one points straight at it; the Comune di Palau embeds the Le Dune feed on its own tourism site.
What nobody tells you first
- The isthmus genuinely splits by ability - beginners and cautious intermediates default to one bay, stronger/gustier conditions and more advanced riders to the other; ask locally which side is which before rigging, it changes how your session should go.
- Mistral gusts reported over 40 knots are not unusual - this is a spot that rewards conservative sizing on big wind days, not a gentle all-day cruise every day.
- Parking and beach space right at Isuledda fill up on strong-wind summer days; arrive early or expect a walk from an overflow area.
- Porto Pollo itself is quiet at night - if you were expecting a party spot on the beach, you'll be disappointed; the going-out life is in Palau or further on the Costa Smeralda.
- August (especially around Ferragosto, mid-month) brings the heaviest Italian domestic tourist crush to this whole coast, including ferry queues to La Maddalena - book ferries and restaurants ahead or shift your trip to June/September.
- The isthmus does not split by ability - it splits by discipline, and by law. Capitaneria di Porto La Maddalena Ordinanza 38/2016 bans kitesurfing in the Bay of Porto Pollo from the Sunday before Easter to 10 November: that bay is reserved for windsurf, dinghies and catamarans. Kites ride the Porto Liscia side, on the western (ponente) flank, entering and leaving through a marked corridor 200 m long and 80 m wide, and must otherwise stay beyond 200 m from shore. Inside the corridor: body drag or slow controlled riding only, no jumps or tricks, returning kiters have right of way, kite dropped before the low-water line, flotation aid compulsory, sunrise to sunset only. Rigging on the wrong beach is not a faux pas, it is a maritime offence under arts. 1161/1164/1174/1231 of the Navigation Code.
